Assessment
This was the second part of a two-part workshop on WebQuests. As stated in
the first workshop log entry, I had only minimal exposure to WebQuests before
attending this workshop. Consequently, I was a bit overwhelmed. Having noted
this however, I believe any and all exposure only assists in expanding one's
knowledge and skill development base.
Recommendations
The workshop descriptions must be more specific. I also think the course should
provide more basic introductory workshops at the beginning of the semester that
would allow the technology challenged participants to get up to speed on
technology basics before stepping into more involved workshops.

COOL NEW WEB 2 TOOLS: (e.g. WizIQ, DimDim, Seesmic) – JIM DUNNE
3/16/09 (2.5 hrs)
Briefly describe the learners whose needs could be met by information in
the presentation, the subject areas that could be impacted by information
in the presentation, the Teaching/Administrative areas that could be
impacted by information in the presentation, and a description of
population that could be affected by information in the presentation:
This workshop explored three new Web 2.0 tools for online teaching or web
conferencing. We explored possible educational applications of these tools (e.g.
presentation of literature unit, poetry applications, etc.)
Through this experience, what did you learn about how technology
can/should be used in teaching/learning (your response could focus on
topics related to relative advantage of technology, student motivation,
classroom management, effectiveness, etc.)?:
The applications addressed multiple online teaching and learning needs, virtual
classroom, web conferencing, and video blogging. These tools clearly address
teaching effectiveness and student engagement and creativity.
This workshop explored the notion of moving learning outside the classroom and
into the community and environment. We used artwork as a springboard to
discuss environment and explored the museum's grounds as a learning lab. We
used technology to capture, engage with, and share.

Salinger Scavenger Hunt – 2/5/09 – (1 hr)
Were there any participants with disabilities?
Briefly describe the learner(s), subject being taught, and the learning
environment:
This was a junior class of both ethnically and socially diverse students. The
English teacher brought students into the computer lab to introduce a unit on J.D.
Salinger's novel Catcher in the Rye.
Were there any participants with disabilities?
If technology was used, what did you learn about how technology
can/should be used in teaching/learning (your response could focus on
topics related to relative advantage of technology, student motivation,
classroom management, effectiveness, etc.)?:
The teacher implemented a scavenger hunt as a pre-read exercise in which the
students were asked to explore websites for both author information and
historical context. The activity engaged the students and served as a great
introductory vehicle to the novel.
If (or if not) technology was used, how might the teacher/students use
technology in teaching/learning to improve the session (your response
could focus on topics related to relative advantage of technology, student
motivation, classroom management, effectiveness, etc.)
The scavenger hunt might be more geared toward a critical thinking activity
rather than a scavenger hunt.
This experience focused student teachers on first-year basics and suggested the
advantage of technology in maintaining record-keeping and first-day presentation
application of rules and expectations.
2/10/09 – Classroom Management – (2 hrs)
I assisted student teachers of English Language Arts with their student teaching
experiences by bringing in real world knowledge. The ongoing sessions include
a variety of topics, including directed sessions guided by the supervising teacher,
direct instruction by me, as well as informal question and answer sessions.
This experience focused student teachers on first-year basics and suggested the
advantage of technology in maintaining classroom management. We discussed
the notion of active engagement of learners through the use of technology, which
would then reduce classroom management issues.
This experience focused student teachers on first-year basics and suggested the
advantage of technology in maintaining record-keeping and a class website. We
also discussed a presentation application of rules and expectations for parents
on Back-To-School Night. I spoke to the students about my district's use of
attendance and grading software, as well as a parent portal where parents can
access student information.
This experience focused student teachers on first-year basics and suggested the
advantage of technology to motivate students. We discussed the notion of active
engagement of learners through the use of technology. I suggested collaboration
tools, such as WebQuests and GoogleDocs. The implementation of a blogging
tool, such as Classroom Blogmeister, changes the perspective of the students as
they recognize the power of addressing an authentic audience.
This experience focused student teachers on first-year basics and suggested the
advantage of technology in all aspects of student-teacher relationships to
motivate, engage, and collaborate. We not only discussed the notion of active
engagement of learners through the use of technology while in school but also
spoke about the advantages to students who are more technologically savvy
once they graduate. We discussed collaboration tools, such as WebQuests and
GoogleDocs as critical thinking tools, as well as blogging tools, such as
Classroom Blogmeister to establish voice for the authentic audience. We also
spoke about the use of technology in record-keeping and data collection for
teacher review.
Briefly describe the learner(s), the topic taught, the technology application
used, and the learning environment (be sure to include the number of
learners involved):
Mentoring with an English colleague took place in our computer lab with
instruction in David Warlick's and Landmark Project's Class Blogmeister. We
discussed the site, its uses, its drawbacks, the moderation features, and we
explored my 12th grade Modern Literature class' site.
Through this experience, what did you learn about how technology
can/should be used in teaching/learning (your response could focus on
topics related to relative advantage of technology, student motivation,
classroom management, effectiveness, etc.):
We discussed the increase not only in motivation for the students, but also in
work ethic and quality of work. We explored the fact that this increase occurs as
the result of the knowledge that their audience no longer merely consists of
teacher and/or classmates but is expanded to include thousands of people.
Through this experience, what did you learn about how technology
can/should be used in teaching/learning (your response could focus on
topics related to relative advantage of technology, student motivation,
classroom management, effectiveness, etc.)?:
Student motivation would not only increase, but also work ethic and quality of
work would improve, while classroom management issues would lessen given
heightened student engagement.
DR. SCHNEIDERMAN’S WORKSHOP – Online
TakingITGlobal: Technologies support youth leadership initiatives around
the world 10/20/09 (2.5 hrs)
Through this experience, what did you learn about how technology
can/should be used in teaching/learning (your response could focus on
topics related to relative advantage of technology, student motivation,
classroom management, effectiveness, etc.)?:
It is obvious that this site empowers young people to take an active role in global
issues, providing them with a venue to actively discuss ways in which to bring
about true change not only at the local level, but also in global arenas as well.
Through this experience, what did you learn about how technology
can/should be used in teaching/learning (your response could focus on
topics related to relative advantage of technology, student motivation,
classroom management, effectiveness, etc.):
The teacher began a new unit and implemented a SmartBoard. It enhanced the
lecture by its use of the interactive whiteboard to present multiple slides
containing maps, graphs, and other pertinent information.
Through this experience, what did you learn about how technology
can/should be used in teaching/learning (your response could focus on
topics related to relative advantage of technology, student motivation,
classroom management, effectiveness, etc.)?:
It quickly became clear that although the SmartBoard was used to enhance the
lesson, it could have been used more effectively. The lecture was still teacher-
centered and the whiteboard was not used to its full potential: a more interactive,
student-engaged lesson. This was my first exposure to a SmartBoard within a
classroom, and I can clearly see its advantage not only for student motivation
and classroom management, but also to enhance the effectiveness of a lesson.

Tech Draw – 12/4/09 – (1 hr)
Were there any participants with disabilities?
Briefly describe the learner(s), subject being taught, and the learning
environment:
This was a high school elective class of mixed grade levels and both ethnically
and socially diverse students. The course focuses on the aspects of
designer/engineer, draftsmen, and machinist factory applications. It is designed
to simulate a work environment for students wishing to enter the field.
If technology was used, what did you learn about how technology
can/should be used in teaching/learning (your response could focus on
topics related to relative advantage of technology, student motivation,
classroom management, effectiveness, etc.)?:
I cannot think of a better way to implement technology that by providing students
with real-world skills and authentic hands-on experience. The method supports
motivation and alleviates the need for classroom management.
If (or if not) technology was used, how might the teacher/students use
technology in teaching/learning to improve the session (your response
could focus on topics related to relative advantage of technology, student
motivation, classroom management, effectiveness, etc.)
I cannot think of a better way for the implementation of technology. It not only
allows for technology and personal growth on the part of the students but also
provides for instructional guidance as well.
ADDITIONAL FIELDWORK
TEACHING OTHERS
3/2/10 – Molly Scaldaferri (Patchogue-Medford High School) (2 hrs.)
Briefly describe the learner(s), the topic taught, the technology application
used, and the learning environment (be sure to include the number of
learners involved):
I introduced the Web 2.0 tool Glogster with a fellow English colleague. She is
thinking of implementing this in her English 11 Honors class as a means through
which the students can further explore the literature to express various literary
elements, such as symbolism, characterization, and theme.
Through this experience, what did you learn about how technology
can/should be used in teaching/learning (your response could focus on
topics related to relative advantage of technology, student motivation,
classroom management, effectiveness, etc.)?
It is clear that the excitement generated through this instruction proves the power
that technology can have regarding teaching and learning. This user-friendly
program will allow the teachers and learners another means through which to
enhance their academic experience. I assured my colleague that when
implementing Glogster her students will be highly motivated and engaged, as this
was my experience when using it with my students.
CLASSROOM BLOGGING
ONLINE 2/6/10 – Perri Nation (Southampton High School) (2.5 hrs.)
Briefly describe the learner(s), the topic taught, the technology application
used, and the learning environment (be sure to include the number of
learners involved):
Clearly, all K-12 learners could benefit from the implementation of Web 2.0 tools
into the curriculum. During this workshop, we discussed ways in which to
incorporate technology into lesson planning via blogging. We explored ways to
implement blogs to enhance lesson planning.
Through this experience, what did you learn about how technology
can/should be used in teaching/learning (your response could focus on
topics related to relative advantage of technology, student motivation,
classroom management, effectiveness, etc.)?
The increase, not only in motivation for the students, but also in work ethic and
quality of work, is quite apparent. We explored the fact that this increase occurs
as the result of the knowledge that their audience no longer merely consists of
teacher and/or classmates but is expanded to include thousands of people.
Through this experience, what did you learn about how technology
can/should be used in teaching/learning (your response could focus on
topics related to relative advantage of technology, student motivation,
classroom management, effectiveness, etc.)?
As a result of this workshop, I am able to see how easy it is not only to embed
just about anything into a website, but also where to go for instruction if you are
having difficulty completing the task. This is a meaningful and necessary skill
that all teachers and learners can implement.
Through this experience, what did you learn about how technology
can/should be used in teaching/learning (your response could focus on
topics related to relative advantage of technology, student motivation,
classroom management, effectiveness, etc.)?
Again, it is clear that incorporation of this whiteboard technology into the
classroom will enhance the experiences of both teachers and learners, as the
Eno provides ways to actively engage the learners with a more multi-modal
approach to learning. In this way, the lessons become more student-centered
and learners are more highly motivated.
