TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

ADVANTAGES OF SKIN-PASSING

Cold-rolled steel strip is something we encounter

every day in one place after another. Surface effects,
whether high-gloss, mat or other, communicate an
impression of beauty and elegance. Properties that
ennoble the products.

The objective of skin-passing is to attain the correct

yield points and the desired surface characteristics.

In addition to the aesthetic effect, the surface of steel

strip is of technical importance. For example, the correct surface roughness ensures that painted surfaces
have a permanently perfect visual appearance.
Other properties of cold-rolled steel strip remain
unnoticed by us. However, they are indispensable
for industrial further processing.
Let us take a beverages can, for example, which
is fashioned out of thin tinplate in a single deepdrawing operation. To produce it economically, not
only is the right surface quality needed but above all
a defined deformation behaviour. Through more precise adjustment of the necessary properties, it has
been possible to reduce the weight of the beverages
can by 30 % over the past 25 years.

Definition of the yield points

Skin-passing causes the unsteady yield-point range,
known as the Lders band, to be transformed into a
defined yield point. This serves to improve the flow
behaviour during the deep-drawing operation and to
prevent unwanted lines of stress.
Setting of the strip roughness
Setting the desired roughness of the strip surface
will, for example, enhance the yield of the deepdrawing process or improve the adhesion of paints.
Achievement of perfect strip flatness
Strip flatness is an important property for the firms
which perform further processing. This is because
good flatness values allow trouble-free operation of
their plant and equipment.

The decisive process step for this is skin-passing

upon completion of the cold strip manufacture. It produces the exact mechanical and geometrical properties that the customer needs for his applications.

SKIN-PASS MILLS
for every application
Skin-pass mills are located at the end of the process
chain and are essential for the trouble-free further
processing of steel strips.

SKIN-PASS MILLS FOR HOT STRIP

Skin-passed hot strip has many advantages: Skinpassing not only helps to attain perfect strip flatness
and harmonize the yield points but also prevents flow
lines and break lines from occurring during the uncoiling process. Furthermore, it makes the downstream
pickling process easier by initially breaking the scale
layer.

SINGLE SKIN-PASS MILLS

FOR COLD STRIP
Our single skin-pass mills are independent rolling
facilities which usually follow the batch-annealing
stage and can be implemented very flexibly. They
can process both hard strip and ultra-mild strip.
They also provide the perfect finish for cold-rolled
stainless steel strip.
A special case is represented by what are known
as the DCR rolling mills, or DCR temper mills. DCR
stands for "Double Cold Reduction". These two-stand
facilities combine thickness reduction in the first
stand with skin-passing in the second stand. It is also
possible to use both stands for skin-passing. In this
case the material properties, such as a defined yield
point, are set in the first stand while in the second
stand the desired surface characteristics are transferred to the strip.

INLINE SKIN-PASS MILL

FOR COLD STRIP
Skin-pass mills can also be installed directly inline
in the exit section of an annealing or hot-dip galvanizing line. The strip can be completed in the process
line, and this has several advantages. The effort and
expenditure on coil handling is reduced, enabling productivity to be enhanced and profitability increased.

TWO-HIGH, FOUR-HIGH
AND SIX-HIGH STANDS
So-called two-high bright mills are employed for
treating austenitic stainless steel strip. These skinpass mills in two-high design provide high-gloss strip
surfaces. Use is also made of four-high stands for
ferritic stainless steels.
Four-high stands can be equipped with work rolls
of varying diameters. In combination with a given roll
force, this allows a wider range of products to be
manufactured. Smaller work roll diameters reduce
the roll force when skin-passing strips made from
high-strength steel grades. Work rolls with a larger
diameter also allow very mild steel grades to be skinpassed with an adequately large roll force, along with
improvement of the impressed roughness.
Since 2003 we have been supplying skin-pass mills
also in six-high construction for highly demanding
skin-passing tasks.. The strip flatness can be perfected yet further thanks to the larger adjustment
range of the six-high mill. Moreover, a wider product
mix can be skin-passed.

QUALITY FEATURES

THE MARKET

LOW-QUANTITY LUBRICATION

Our skin-pass mills are equipped with technological

features that have proven their value in worldwide
operation and satisfy the most stringent requirements of our customers. By applying the most upto-date technology we fulfil the demand for a wider
range of products, optimum product quality and economic plant operation. As standard features, our
skin-pass mills possess hydraulic roll-gap adjustment
systems for controlling the roll force and work-roll
bending systems for influencing the strip flatness.
They also include the extended bending system
among their special equipment items.

Low-quantity lubrication (LQL) is a lubrication concept

for skin-pass mills which is also suitable for utilization
in the final millstand of a tandem mill. In this system,
only that precise quantity of lubricant is applied
which is needed in the roll gap at that moment in
order to reduce the friction.

WORK ROLL DIAMETERS

The use of different work roll diameters in combination with a given roll force enables the product range
to be extended above all by stronger grades.

BENDING SYSTEM AND CVC PLUS

For the skin-passing of soft grades, the increasing
of the roll diameter very soon reaches its limitations.
With the aid of our extended bending system, the
roll force can be safely lowered to values below
100 kN. For this, the backup rolls are raised up in
the four-high and six-high stands. The necessary roll
force is attained solely by means of the work roll
bending or, in the case of the six-high stand, by the
intermediate roll bending. This, for example, allows
the controlled skin-passing of mild IF steels.
We make use of CVC plus for the production of
steel strips with excellent flatness. In addition,
a CVC compensation grind on the backup rolls
ensures a well-balanced distribution of the contact
load, thus reducing the wear on the rolls.

This process has the following advantages in

skin-pass mills:
The service life of the work rolls is more
than doubled.
The roll force is reduced.
The required lubrication quantities are reduced,
which has a positive effect on the environmental
compatibility.
The strip surfaces are cleaner.
The strip flatness is excellent since the process
opens up new possibilities for controlling the
skin-passing operation.
The application of inert gas onto the work rolls and
onto the strip in the exit section enables the rolls
to retain their roughness for a longer period and
their service life is lengthened accordingly. Downstream cleaning of the strip is no longer necessary.
Thanks to the compactness of the system, existing plants can be retrofitted without incurring
great expenditure.
Conclusion: Low-quantity lubrication increases the
proportion of products able to be wet skin-passed
and minimizes the operating costs. The lower quantity of lubricant required also signifies enhanced environmental compatibility.

The lubricant is atomized by compressed air.

FLATNESS MEASURING ROLLER
The measurement of flatness is of decisive importance for the production of top-quality skin-passed
steel strip. SMS Siemag therefore constructs its own
flatness measuring roller, based on the BFI principle.
The roller is characterized by a closed surface, which
not only avoids marks on the strip but also allows
the roller to be coated with any desired material. The
sensors can be adapted very flexibly in accordance
with the multizone cooling system. This enables not
only current demands on the flatness system to be
fulfilled but also future demands.

ONLINE RESIDUAL OIL DETECTION

Rapid, precise and continuous detection and recording
of even the slightest quantities of residual oil on coldrolled strip is nowadays absolutely essential for quality
assurance and for the avoidance of rejects due to corrosion. For this reason, SMS Siemag uses a measuring
method developed jointly with the firm of Kienzle Prozessanalytik, operating on the basis of laser-induced
fluorescence spectroscopy. This online measuring system combines numerous advantages:

It enables the uninterrupted identification and

documenting of residual oil over the width and
length of the strip.
Tramp oil from leaks is detected reliably.
Rejects caused by rust are reduced by rapid
detection of an excessive residual oil content.
Finally, the system supports the optimization
of the lubricant quantity and its utilization in a
manner compatible with consumption.

T-ROLL
Our skin-pass mills are equipped with highly developed open and closed-loop control systems. Depending on the application, the mills possess technological recording and control systems for
Roll force
Strip elongation
Strip tension, flatness
Roughness
Oil residues
Mechanical wear
Our T-roll technology package, for example, makes
possible the effective pilot control of the strip elongation. Above all during start-up and acceleration of the
mill, this enables off-gauge lengths to be reduced
and the strip elongation and flatness to be kept
within the closest tolerances.
Conclusion: Thanks to their high-tech components,
our skin-pass mills are capable already today of satisfying the demands of tomorrow. Future challenges
relating to skin-pass mills aim at greater flexibility as
regards the strip elongations and the product range
to be rolled. The demands made on surface quality
will likewise become more stringent. At the same
time, the operating costs have to be lowered. A contribution to this can be made by the sparing utilization of lubricants, which is sensible also from the
environmental point of view.

ANSHAN IRON & STEEL

Anshan, China
WORLD'S FIRST SKIN-PASS MILL
IN SIX-HIGH CONSTRUCTION
The task
Anshan Iron & Steel Company has built a new
continuous annealing line in Anshan in the Chinese
province of Liaoning. This strip processing line
enables more than 1,000,000 t of high-quality steel
strip to be manufactured each year in the grades
CQ, DQ1, DQ2, DDQ, EDDQ, S-EDDQ, HSS and
TRIP, intended above all for use in the automotive
industry.
Our solution
Our solution is a six-high skin-pass mill with CVC plus
in a continuous annealing line. This is the first time
that SMS Siemag has constructed a skin-pass mill as
a six-high unit and equipped it with CVC plus technology with a view to satisfying the stringent demands
of this customer with regard to strip quality and, in
particular, flatness. In combination with the work-roll
and intermediate-roll bending, the roll-gap geometry
can thus be adapted dynamically to the strip profile,
enabling the desired flatness results to be achieved.
The backup rolls are fitted with a CVC compensation
grind to allow a well-balanced distribution of the contact load. This reduces wear on the rolls.
The result
Outstandingly good strip flatness and surface results
are achieved by the skin-pass mill, which was put
successfully into operation in 2006. The annual
capacity is around 1,000,000 t.

BAOSHAN IRON & STEEL

Shanghai, China
A SOFT FINISH
for mild STEELS
The task
In 2005 Baosteel had placed an order with us for
extension of the cold rolling and strip processing
lines at the Shanghai-Baoshan location. This order
included the erection of a CVC skin-pass mill in the
exit section of the continuous annealing line. The
strips processed at the above location are made of
particularly mild steels which are used, for example,
for automotive outer shells.
Our solution
Six-high skin-pass mill with CVC plus in a continuous annealing line. Since mild IF steels also run
through the CAL in addition to high-strength steel
grades, the skin-pass mill possesses work rolls with
two different diameters and the extended bending
system. The EBS makes it possible to lift up the
backup roll and to apply the very small amount of
roll force solely with the aid of the intermediate
roll bending.
The result
The six-high skin-pass mill was put successfully
into operation in 2008. The EBS allows the roll force
to be varied between 300 and 1,800 kN. The changeover to EBS is specified by the rolling schedule and
takes place automatically. The annual capacity is
729,000 t.

THYSSENKRUPP STEEL EUROPE,

Dortmund, Germany
SKIN-PASSING WITH LQL
The task
ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe AG had placed an order
with us in 2006 for modernization of the continuous
annealing line in the cold rolling mill at the Dortmund
location. In this production line, ThyssenKrupp
processes a wide range of steel grades, from mild IF
steels to high-strength TRIP grades. The objective of
the modernization is to enhance the plant availability
and to improve the product characteristics above
all in respect of the requirements of the automotive
industry. The order also included the modernization
of the inline skin-pass mill.

The result
The mill, with an annual capacity of 780,000 t,
was put into operation in 2007. It involves a new,
pioneering equipment concept. It improves the
conditions for further processing, contributes
decisively to lowering the operating costs and
has a positive influence on environmental compatibility. The plant configuration described here
is attractive not only for new plants but also for
modernization concepts for existing mills, not
least because the conversion work only requires
short downtimes.

Our solution
Four-high skin-pass mill with CVC plus, work rolls
with two different diameters and low-quantity lubrication (LQL). The utilization of different roll diameters
enables TKS to skin-pass both mild and higherstrength steel grades.
The Dortmunders were convinced of the value of
the LQL low-quantity lubrication system thanks to
the emulsion system no longer being needed, to the
compact nature and simplicity of installation of the
equipment and to the low oil consumption. Together
with our X-Pact automation system and our flatness measuring roller, higher plant availability and
enhanced product quality were achieved as the
modernization objectives.

SAUDI IRON & STEEL (HADEED)

Sar-Al-Jubail, Saudi Arabia
SKIN-PASS MILL FOR HOT STRIP
The task
Founded in 1979, the Saudi Iron & Steel Company
(Hadeed) is Saudi Arabia's largest steel producer.
Besides long products, the company manufactures
hot and cold-rolled flat steel products. A skin-pass
mill for the skin-passing and recoiling of hot-rolled
strips from steel grades with a low carbon content
needed to be erected at the Sar-Al-Jubail location.

The result
The mill has been producing since 2006 and it
attains a maximum rolling speed of 460 m/min.
It is designed for the skin-passing of strips in
gauges of 1.2 to 6.0 mm. The annual capacity
is 700, 000 t.

Our solution
Our solution was to provide a skin-pass mill for hot
strip in four-high construction. We supplied all the
mechanical equipment for the mill, comprising an
offline coil preparation station, the skin-pass millstand, the pay-off and tension reels and an inspection
table on which the strip quality can be examined. In
addition, a hydraulic shear was installed in the exit
section. This shear is used for cutting off the strip
head end, cutting out samples and dividing coils into
various strip lengths.
The positive and negative work roll bending makes
possible a maximum control range for the roll crown.
The mill was equipped with a flatness measuring
roller and control system in order to ensure excellent
flatness results and observance of tolerances. Perfect winding of the finished coils is thus safeguarded.
One payoff reel and one tension reel were provided
in tried-and-tested design and fitted with expandable
mandrels.

THYSSENKRUPP STEEL USA

Calvert /Alabama, USA
THE OPTIMUM SOLUTION
for MILD to HIGH-STRENGTH STEELS
The task
ThyssenKrupp Steel and ThyssenKrupp Stainless
USA have built a new manufacturing complex for hot
and cold strip in the US federal state of Alabama.
Strips made from carbon steel and stainless steel
grades are produced and surface-finished in the new
works. The main customers for these high-quality
products are automotive manufacturers and suppliers
in the south of the USA, as well as the construction
sector and the household appliances industry.

The result
The offline skin-pass mill has an annual capacity of
up to 700,000 t. It treats strips in widths between
800 and 1,870 mm. The minimum strip gauge is 0.3
and the maximum gauge is 3 mm. The low-quantity
lubrication lowers the consumption of cooling lubricants and reduces the roll force, thereby lengthening the service life of the work rolls. It ensures
enhanced product quality at lower investment and
operating costs.

ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe had placed a major order

with us in 2007 for the erection of several rolling
facilities and strip processing lines for this complex.
A total of five skin-pass mills form part of the cold
rolling mill and strip processing lines. Three of the
skin-pass mills are incorporated in hot-dip galvanizing
lines as inline facilities, and one mill is installed in a
continuous annealing line. The fifth mill is an offline
skin-pass mill, used mainly for the skin-passing of hot
strip and for the refinishing of cold-rolled strips.
Our solution
Mill No. 5 is an offline skin-pass mill in four-high construction, designed for the skin-passing of annealed
and hot-dip galvanized material. It possesses work
roll bending and is equipped for wet skin-passing. It
can also recoil high-strength material. One of its special features is that it is fitted out for operation with
low-quantity lubrication in the strip entry section.

SALEM STEEL PLANT

Salem, Indien
TECHNICAL HIGHLIGHTS PROVIDE
A GLOSSY FINISH FOR STAINLESS
STEEL STRIP
The task
Salem Steel Plant (SSP), which belongs to the Sail
Group, in Salem in Tamil Nadu province in the southwest of India, placed an order with us in 2008 to supply a skin-pass mill for stainless steel strips. After the
stainless steel strip has been cold-rolled and recrystallized, it is skin-passed. The purpose of this soft
rolling process is to produce high-gloss surfaces and
to achieve the desired mechanical strip properties,
such as deep-drawing strength.

Our solution
The skin-pass mill in two-high reversing design possesses a mathematical model for pass schedule calculation with a view to attaining the desired productivity and quality of the stainless steel strips. The
automatic strip cleaning system ensures a clean strip
surface. The hydraulic roll-gap adjustment system
allows optimum adaptation of the roll gap to the
strip. The top and bottom bright-finishing rolls are
fitted with a polishing device for removing dirt particles from the rolls. To prevent the strip head end
from causing marks on the rolls during the threading
of the strip, a threading guard was installed for the
top and bottom rolls. Finally, the semi-automatic rollchanging device ensures quick changing and safe
handling. The millstand was fabricated in our Hilchenbach workshops and pre-assembled together with
the entry and exit equipment so as to guarantee
short installation times and successful commissioning. All hydraulic and electrical movement sequences
were tested during this procedure.

The result
The rolling facility, in two-high reversing construction, is designed for stainless steel strips in
grades AISI 200, 300 and 400. The mill can roll
strips in widths from 600 to 1,300 mm and
gauges from 0.3 to 4.0 mm. With a millstand drive
power of 700 kW, it can attain maximum rolling
speeds of 600 m/min. The intended capacity is
100,000 t. Commissioning took place in 2009.

The mill was pre-assembled and tested

GAZI METAL MAMLLERI

Karasu, Trkei
SKIN-PASS MILL FOR C AND SI
STEEL GRADES WITH AN OPTION
FOR EXTENSION INTO A DCR MILL
The task
On behalf of the Turkish company of Gazi Metal
Mamlleri, SMS Siemag is building a new production
facility for carbon-steel and silicon-steel cold strip
near to the town of Karasu. With the finished strip,
our customer will supply the automotive industry and
manufacturers of household appliances, for example.
For the first stage of construction, the supply scope
includes a semi-continuous pickling line with an incorporated acid regeneration plant, a reversing cold mill
in six-high construction with CVC plus technology
as well as a skin-pass mill in four-high construction.
A special feature of this order is that provision is
made right at the beginning for the extension of the
production facility in a second construction stage.
In the second stage, Gazi Metal wishes to attain an
overall annual production of 700,000 t and, in addition, produce tinplate intended for the manufacture
of beverage and foodstuffs cans.
Our solution
The skin-pass mill is of four-high design and is
equipped with hydraulic roll gap adjustment. In the
second phase of construction, the mill is to be
extended by a second millstand. In this way, the
skin-pass mill will be extended to become a so-called
DCR mill (Double Cold Reduction) for the processing
of tinplate. In addition to skin-passing, the DCR mill
allows thickness reduction of the strip, which is performed in the first millstand while skin-passing takes
place in the second stand. The foundations necessary for the extension are designed and constructed
accordingly right at the beginning. The existing tension reel can be relocated so as to enable the second
millstand to be erected later at this position.

28

The result
The skin-pass mill processes strips made from carbon steel and silicon steel in widths ranging from
600 to 1,500 mm. The thickness range extends
from 0.25 to 3.0 mm. The maximum rolling speed
is 1,000 m/min. The annual capacity is around
300,000 t. This will rise to 475,000 t after the mill
has been extended by a second stand.

with skin-passing in the second stand. This
enables the material properties and the surface
roughness to be set in a very carefully targeted
manner for tinplate. This guarantees troublefree further processing.

RASSELSTEIN GMBH
Andernach, Germany
MODERNIZATION OF THE
TWO-STAND DCR TEMPER MILL
The task
At its Andernach location Rasselstein GmbH, which
belongs to ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe, produces tinplate for packaging manufacture. Following the closure of production facilities at ThyssenKrupp Steel 's
Dortmund location, it became necessary to expand
the production capacities at Andernach in order to
safeguard the firm's leading position in tinplate and
to cater for the present and future tinplate requirements of the packaging industry. The two-stand temper mill was therefore relocated from Dortmund to
Andernach and comprehensively modernized.
For tinplate manufacture, the hot-rolled strip is pickled and then reduced in a tandem mill. Following
degreasing and annealing, it is temper-rolled and
skin-passed on the two-stand DCR mill. The DCR
cold rolling mill allows wet skin-passing and thickness reduction by up to 30 percent. The doublereduced material obtained in this way signifies the
saving of material for the customer because smaller
thicknesses are compensated by higher strength.
The temper rolling process in the DCR mill prepares
the strip for further surface-finishing and coating.
The DCR mill thus occupies a central position in this
process sequence. A further important concern with
regard to the revamp was to safeguard the highest
quality standards.

32

The purpose of the modernization was to

achieve the following objectives:
To maintain in good condition and to
reuse the components of the old mill
To change the rolling direction
To process strips of greater width
To increase the coil weight
Short coil sequences
Our solution
As part of the highly demanding revamp of the
two-stand DCR temper mill in four-high construction, we supplied components and equipment
for the coil preparation station and the entry section, for the millstand and intermediate stand
area, for the exit section with tension reel and
for the coil transfer car. Furthermore, our supply
scope included the hydraulics and utilities systems, the wet skin-passing system, the fumeexhaust and cleaning system and the protective
equipment. After dismantling, essential components such as mill housings, bending system,
work roll and backup roll chocks were reworked
in our workshop and then pre-assembled for
inspection purposes.
The result
In mid-December 2003 the DCR temper mill
commenced regular operation at the new location following a short revamp period. The mill
is designed for an annual capacity of 800,000 t.
The width range of the temper-rolled and skinpassed cold strip is between 600 and 1,400 mm.
The strip gauges at the entry and exit sections
are between 0.12 and 0.5 mm. A strip thickness
reduction of four to 30 % is attained in the first
stand. In the second stand a strip elongation of
0.6 to 1.4 % is achieved.
