reinforcementbars:acomparativeassessmentofplaincarbonand
lowalloysteelgrades
Abstract
Anextensiveinvestigationhasbeencarriedouttostudystructurepropertycharacteristicsandcorrosionbehavior
inthreevarietiesofthermomechanicallytreated(TMT)reinforcementbars(rebars)producedinanintegrated
steelplantundertheSteelAuthorityofIndiaLimited.Threeexperimentalsteelheatsoneofplaincarbonand
twooflowalloychemistrywerechosenforthestudy.Ofthetwolowalloyheats,onewascopperbearingand
theothercontainedbothcopperandchromiumforimprovedcorrosionresistance.Hotrolledbarsforeach
specificchemistryweresubjectedtoinlinethermomechanicaltreatment,wherequenchingparameterswere
alteredtoachievedifferentyieldstrengthlevels.
AlltheTMTrebars,regardlessofchemistryandstrengthlevel,exhibitedacompositemicrostructureconsisting
offerritepearliteatthecoreandtemperedmartensiteattherim.Althoughatendencytowardformationof
Widmanstttenferritewasevidentinbarsof500and550MPayieldstrengthlevels,noadverseeffectontheir
strengthandductilitywasobserved.Fromthestandpointofmechanicalproperties,therebarsnotonlyconformed
tominimumyieldstrengthrequirements,butalsoexhibitedhighelongationvalues(21to28%)andexcellent
bendability.CorrosionstudiesofbothTMTandcoldtwistedanddeformed(CTD)rebarssubjectedtodifferent
laboratorytestsindicatedthatcorrosionresistanceincreasedinthisorder:CTD,plaincarbonTMT,copper
bearingTMT,andcopper/chromiumbearingTMT.
