Hosttohostcommunication:RS232overserialline;handshakinganderror
handling; packet switching; reliable transmission stopandwait, sliding
window;logicalconnections.

Multiple colocated hosts: addressing, LAN access methods; CSMA/CD,


Ethernet,Tokenpassing,wirelessLANs;Simpleperformancemodels;WAN
accessmethodsPPP.

Remotely located hosts: addressing, interconnection of LANs; repeaters,


bridges,routers;ATMcellswitching

IP: routing protocols (RIP and OSPF); congestion control concepts and
mechanisms(chokepackets,leakybucket);IPv4

Endtoendreliability:theendtoendargument;protocolsTCP,UDP,RPC;
connectionestablishment,flowcontrol.

Applicationsprotocolsforemail,ftp,web,DNS.

Advanced topics (any 2 of the following): Wireless networks and mobile


computing; network management systems; security threats and solutions;
IPv6;ATM;Multimediaapplicationsanditsimpactonnetworking.
