ABOUT LOVE
God loves us in mysterious ways.
UNCONDITIONAL love of God for us
is something we will never fully understand
it is a mystery
Our life is really a love story with God.
It is God who has loved us first; it is His love that first appears in the horizons of our life.
This love from God is freely given.
it can never be earned and yet we always receive it
As we freely receive the love of God through His Son Jesus Christ, we are also invited to love Him
back.
We must allow ourselves to be loved by Christ so that we can love like Christ.
Love the Lord your God with all of your heart, all of your soul, all of your mind and all of your strength.
Love your neighbor as yourself.
Who is my neighbor?
Love of
God

My neighbor is anyone I interact with or relate to.

Love of neighbor has 3 dimensions:
a) Love of self.
b) Love of those who are closest to me.
c) Love of those who are strangers to me.
God asks us to love others.
Love is the source of VALUE and ORIGIN.

HONORING PARENTS: The Family: Covenant, Church and Foundation of Society

Filipinos are known for their love of the family.
Our families are central to our being Filipino. We value our families:
in the way we relate to our parents and siblings
in our devotion to their needs,
and even in the kinds of choices we make in terms of career or vocation.
It brings about changes in all areas of life and some have adverse effects especially on the family.
CHRISTIAN FAMILY
Ephesians 6:2

Our families build up our greater community by being the originating context of every individuals
values and loving concern for others.

The 4th Commandment

KJNL

The principal commandment that expresses and promotes the love and respect family members extend
to one another.

In a society conditioned by media where short-term relationships are increasingly accepted, we turn to
the family as an institution of fidelity and commitment.
Sirach 3: 1-16
Honor your father and mother, that you have a long life in the land which the Lord, your God is giving
you.

The passage reminds us of the 4th commandment.

Is a basic moral responsibility.
Showing them proper gratitude, affection, respect, obedience, and care.

Children have the obligation to respect their parents.

When children respect their parents, they grow in loving relationship with one another and deeper
sharing in Gods love.
Children must grow up with a correct attitude of freedom with regard to material goods.
Adopt a simple lifestyle and fully convinced that man is more precious than what he has.
CCC 1004: Human life & parents are not to be evaluated in terms of productivity.

To honor and care for the elderly in our family is our obligation.

We should not treat them as objects to be pushed aside and ignored.

CCC 1004: Respect for aged parents is a necessary virtue not just for individual family but for the
community as well.

It is our obligation to love our siblings.

When we love our brothers and sisters, we are giving honor to our parents as well.

Though we may have had negative

experiences within our families: occasion when
we felt unloved and rejected.
Through the help of others and Gods healing
grace, we can still choose to become loving
individuals despite our hurts.

CFC 1006-1009
The Catechism for Filipino Catholics cites 3 obstacles to
honoring parents:
1. Not all parents act as loving parents.
2. Children distancing from parents.
3. Generation Gap

It is the duty of the parents to nurture and guide their children.

To contribute to the welfare of the community and our society.

Duty of parents: to courageously train the children in the essential values of human life.
1. By word and example
2. Daily round of choices
3. Concrete actions and signs

The family is an irreplaceable school in
developing, guarding, and transmitting the social
virtues.

THE FAMILY: COVENANT, CHURCH AND FOUNDATION OF SOCIETY

Relationship within the family should be based on authentic love and trust.
Family as a COVENANT RELATIONSHIP:
Covenant

sealed by blood
bound by a love freely given not by forced obligation
the bond of love becomes the symbol of the covenant which unites us with God

Family as a DOMESTIC CHURCH:

Family

is a household church
parents are the shepherd
is the first school of discipleship
Lead the children to KNOW and LOVE God.

Every family is a Church in the home.

Every family has the duty to form their members according to the basic Christian truths and values.

KJNL
Family as FOUNDATION OF THE SOCIETY:

Training a good and responsible citizen starts at home.

Philippine society is becoming more depersonalized.
Family is an irreplaceable school in developing values of:
respect
dialogue
generosity
justice
love

We are families. We are products of upbringing love, and experiences we have within our families.
Sometimes, without realizing it, we share the same habits, tendencies, attitude, and values with our other family
members.
SIN IS THE GREATEST OBSTACLE TO FREEDOM
1. DEFINITION OF SIN
Sin is failure to love.
According to Catechism of the Catholic Church,
It is an offense against reason, truth, and right conscience.
It is a failure in genuine love for God and neighbor.
It wounds the nature of the human person and injures human solidarity.
According to Catechism for the Filipino Catholics 762,
Refusing to follow our own consciences call towards the good;
Rejecting God, our own true selves and others, by turning away from God, our true end;
Breaking Gods loving covenant with us, shown forth in Jesus Christ,
Greatest obstacle

It rejects the good to which we are directed by our

conscience.
It is a refusal of Gods love.
It is breaking our fundamental loving relationship with
God, others and even ourselves.

Deviation

voluntary turning away or departure from the right order

Contradiction

internal conflict between the true nature of man as oriented to God and his earthly pre-occupations and
tendencies
2. CONCEPT OF SIN IN SACRED SCRIPTURE
Old Testament
Sin is often looked upon as a transgression of Gods law and will.

KJNL

The sin of Adam and Eve is not only the original but also the typical infidelity of humankind.
Sin is the rupture of the covenant bond, the violation of the spousal relationship.
It is a negative response to Gods call.
It leads to death, both spiritual and physical.

The OT presents 3 basic notions of sin (CFC #766):

1) Missing the mark
2) Depravity and perversity
3) Rebellion and transgression
New Testament
Sin is considered as ungrateful desertion of the Lord.
The sinner lives in enmity against God; therefore, sinners are excluded from the Kingdom of God.
The capital sin is the refusal to recognize the power of God in Christ and to confess Him as the
Messiah.
Sometimes, we downgrade the reality of sin by mistaking them as petty mistakes. Because of that, we
lose the sense of sin.
SIGNS:
Mentality #1

It is merely a stage in our personal growth, a part of self-becoming.

Ex. Freedom to do what they want to do...anyway everybody is doing it...

Mentality #2

We tend to rationalize our sinful acts.

Mentality #3

It is simply a state of the mind or acts of the thoughts that create feelings of sin or guilt.

Mentality #4
Over stress the power of sin to the point of that they lose Gods power to save them. Evil will triumph.
Tao lang tayo, mahina, walang magagawa.
3. DIMENSIONS OF SIN
Personal
Sin that destroys ones inner wholeness.
Social
Sin that affects and causes harm to ones neighbor.
These sins refer to negative moral attitudes and acts or failure to act which run counter to the
common good.
Ex. discrimination, prejudices
Religious Dimension
Sin that rejects and ignores the structures established by God.
Rejection of God
PERSONAL AND SOCIAL SIN

KJNL
Personal sins results when we freely choose to give in to our self-centered tendencies;
However since we are all persons-in-community, all personal sins (no matter how secret or
private they seem to be) have social effects.
We are still responsible for sins committed by others:
1) when we cooperate in them by participating directly and voluntarily with them;
2) ordering, advising, praising, or approving them;
3) not disclosing or not hindering them when we have an obligation to do so;
4) protecting evildoers.
4. DEGREES OF SIN
A. Mortal
derived from the Latin mors meaning death
a morally wrong decision which is so intensive that it gives a wrong orientation to mans life
a sin which causes a total break in our relationship with God
Three Conditions for Mortal Sin (CCC 1858-9):
1) There is full knowledge or full awareness of the wrong choice.
2) Gravity or seriousness of the matter.
3) There is full consent of the free will that presupposes the actual doing of the wrong option.
B. Venial
from the Latin venia meaning favor or pardon
a sin that causes a weakening or a strain in our relationship with God
5. DIVISION OF SIN
Internal Sins
occur in the mind
found in thought and desire
Kinds of Internal Sins:
1) Mental Complacency in Sinful Imaginations
takes pleasure in sinful thoughts or desires without the intention of bringing these into act
2) Sinful Joy
takes pleasure in an evil deed done to another
3) Sinful Regret
disappointment in not having performed an evil deed
4) Evil Desire
desire or resolution to perform a sinful action
5) Prejudice or Bias

6. SINS OF OMISSION AND COMMISISION
Sin of Omission
the failure to perform an obligatory act
Sin of Commission
the performance of a forbidden act
7. CAPITAL SINS: (PEGSLAW)
o They are called capital not because they are always necessarily grave but because they easily
become vices and sources of many other sins.

KJNL
A capital vice is that which has an exceedingly desirable end so that in his desire for it a man
goes on the commission of many sins all of which are said to originate in that vice as their chief
service.

lives and in which he is immersed since the days of his birth.
Certain Trends that Contribute to the Decline of this Basic Sense of Sin (CFC 765):
From seeing sin everywhere to not recognizing it anywhere.
From stressing the fear of hell to preaching a love of God that excludes any punishment due to sin.
