235 FELLOWSHIPS

A community of discovery
Imperial represents everything
thats most exciting about science,
engineering, medicine and business.
Its a place where engineers work
alongside clinicians, scientists
rub shoulders with designers,
and mathematicians collaborate
with business experts.
Its no surprise then that Imperial has been home
to so many pioneers over the years, from Alexander
Fleming, discoverer of penicillin, to Dennis Gabor,
inventor of holography. The innovations that
continue to make the world a healthier, cleaner
and safer place are made possible by our
commitment to collaboration, which extends
from our undergraduate education to the world
leading work of our research groups.

PROBLEM SOLVING AT
ITS MOST AWE-INSPIRING

Imperial is a place where

exciting things happen every day.
Thats not surprising considering
who works here people who...

have been awarded to members of

our staff from three prestigious societies:
f the Royal Society
f the Royal Academy of Engineering
f the Academy of Medical Sciences

... have made essential contributions

to the quality and safety of healthcare,
like Professor the Lord Darzi, former
Parliamentary Under-Secretary of
State at the Department of Health
and UK Global Ambassador for
Health and Life Sciences.

... have created lifechanging innovations,

like Regius Professor
Chris Toumazou, developer
of one of the worlds first
cochlear implants, enabling
deaf people to hear.

... break new ground in their

field, like Professor Molly
Stevens, who received the
2012 EU40 award for best
materials scientist in Europe
under the age of 40.

... change our understanding

of the universe, like Emeritus
Professor Sir Tom Kibble,
one of six physicists whose
work in the 1960s led to the
concept of the Higgs boson.

... amaze the public with

their discoveries, like Professor
Sir John Pendry, whose work
on metamaterials underpinned
the development of the first
invisibility cloak.

This culture of discovery plays a big part in

your Imperial experience, adding new depth
to your choice of study topics and inspiring
new directions in which to take your interests.
Many of our degrees involve at least one
substantial research project, so youll have
the chance to gain research skills and forge
new paths in an area of particular interest to you,
under the supervision of an academic mentor.
Many of our researchers are involved in teaching
so youll get to experience their expertise first
hand in lectures, seminars and laboratory work.
You may also have the chance to work alongside
them through our Undergraduate Research
Opportunities Programme (UROP), which offers
over 400 students a year a hands-on experience
in one of our research teams see pages 2223.

IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON

... are tackling infectious diseases,

like Professor Christl Donnelly.
She and her colleagues work with
the World Health Organisation
to model the spread of diseases
like Ebola.

... are leading missions into space,

like Professor Michele Dougherty,
a Principal Investigator on the Cassini
spacecraft, orbiting Saturn, and on the
JUICE spacecraft, due to reach Jupiters
largest moon in around 2030.

... are working to preserve history, like

materials scientist Professor Mary Ryan,
who is working with the Royal Air Force
Museum to save from corrosion the last
remaining intact World War II German
light bomber, known as The Flying Pencil.

... are capturing the imagination of

Hollywood like Professor Murray Shanahan,
whose book on artificial intelligence
inspired film-maker Alex Garland. Professor
Shanahan acted as scientific advisor on
Alex Garlands 2015 film Ex Machina.

PROBLEM SOLVING
ON A GLOBAL SCALE
Our research comes alive when
it reaches the people who need it
and want it the most. Were best
described as a community of problem
solvers who are dedicated to finding
solutions to some of the worlds
biggest challenges and we want
you to join us in our search!

Conserving rainforests in tropical Asia

Tackling the growing threat

of superbugs is the focus of Imperials

is the goal of the SAFE project, which is

studying rainforests in Borneo to understand
how logging and deforestation affect the ability
of the tropical landscape to support a unique
diversity of life.

Antimicrobial Research Collaborative.

Although antibiotics have transformed
medicine, their increasing use has
created bacteria that are immune to
their effects. These drug-resistant bugs
currently kill around 700,000 a year
worldwide, and this figure is set
to rise.

CLEVER
GADGETS
Robot hand
Imperial scientists have
developed a robotic hand that
is controlled via arm movements.
It responds to tiny vibrations
that muscle fibres produce as
they move. These vibrations
are sensed and passed to the
robot hand, so that the user can
operate it like a real hand.

Developing a vaccine against HIV

is the aim of the European AIDS Vaccine
Initiative, a 23 million euro project led
by Imperial researchers. Over two million
people are newly infected with HIV every
year and an effective vaccine remains
the best hope of ending the epidemic.

Preventing up to three million

deaths from malaria each year
Eliminating a deadly fungus that is devastating
amphibian populations worldwide is the focus
of an Imperial team. Chytridiomycosis, a disease
caused by the skin-eating chytrid fungus,
has affected over 500 amphibian
species worldwide, wiping out
thousands of frog, toad and
salamander populations.

postgraduate student Clementine Chambon from the Department
of Chemical Engineering. Oorja is developing mini power plants
that use biomass such as crop waste to produce energy for people
in India who are not on the energy grid.

WHAT
MEANS

Fees and funding

Imperial offers one of the most
generous overall bursary packages
for Home students studying in the
UK. It is designed to provide help
with living costs, on top of any
government loans and grants
you are entitled to.
Got questions about funding your studies?
Imperials Student Financial Support team
can offer advice and support:
www.imperial.ac.uk/
fees-and-funding/contact-us

WHAT DOES IT COST?

There are two main costs involved in university

study: tuition fees and living costs. You should
also be aware of additional study costs, such
as compulsory field trips and books contact
the department youre interested in for details.

Our tuition fees have not yet been

confirmed for 2017 entry. As soon as they
are available we will publish them on
our Undergraduate Study website:

Tuition fees for Home and EU undergraduate

students are regulated by the UK government.
As a guide, the fee for 2016 entry was:

9,000

LIVING COSTS

GRANT

Below is a rough guide to

the costs involved in living
in relative comfort for one
academic year (39 weeks).
In reality how much you spend
will depend on your lifestyle,
whether youre living at home
or away, and how good you are
at sticking to a budget.

52-week contracts
are standard in private
accommodation so you will
need to budget for the entire
year (not just 39 weeks) if
youre not staying in College
accommodation or youre
not planning to go home
during the holidays.

No fees have to be paid upfront you can

apply for a Tuition Fee Loan from the
government to cover the entire cost of tuition
for every year of study (see page 59).

For Overseas students

Overseas student fees vary per course. In 2016,
these ranged from 24,000 to 37,100 per year.
* Please note that our fees may be subject to annual
inflationary increases subject to UK government regulations.

THE IMPERIAL BURSARY

OF ITS KIND IN THE UK

f

The Imperial Bursary is designed to ease

the cost of London living. It provides support
on a sliding scale to Home students with
household incomes up to 60,000 per year.
You will automatically qualify for a bursary
for each year of study that your household
income remains below this level.
The Imperial Bursary is designed to
complement the governments funding
and make sure that Home students in the
most financial need have access to sufficient
funding to cover their entire living costs
so it is paid in addition to any government
loans to which youre already entitled.
There is no separate application process for
the Imperial Bursary: we award them based
on household income assessments done
by the relevant government funding body,
e.g. Student Finance England for students
from England, so only Home students who
have applied for means-tested government
funding are eligible. Unlike government
funding, the bursary is paid in monthly
instalments throughout the academic year
so your budget will receive a regular boost.

from the standard course.
Students on the Year Abroad stream
spend the third year studying at a
university abroad, following a course
of study that is equivalent to the
third year at Imperial, with formal
assessments counting towards your
degree. In France and Germany you will
normally be taught in the host countrys
language, which you prepare for in
years one and two. Year in Industry
placements take place between the
third and fourth year, typically with
a Formula One racing team or
aircraft manufacturer.
In the fourth year, all students
continue to study a mixture of core
and optional courses and a four-month
(six-week for year abroad students)
individual research project in industry,
at a research establishment or in
a university in the UK or overseas.
There are opportunities throughout the

and the artificial arm he has created.

What you study

The course provides a broad
foundation in physics, mathematics,
engineering and medical science, and
then progresses to more advanced
engineering studies that apply the
quantitative aspects of engineering
analysis and design to a broad range
of biomedical problems. All students
follow a common programme
of study for the first two years,
covering topics such as medical
science, mathematics, electronics,
fluid mechanics and biomolecular
engineering. This is designed
to help you develop a deep
understanding of fundamental
engineering principles alongside
an extensive knowledge of how
the human body works.

In the second year, you will take part in

an engineering design project as part of the
Sports Innovation Challenge. This project
aims to unleash creativity to improve the
sporting and training equipment available
to disabled people. A number of the projects
developed by our previous students will be
used at the Rio Paralympic Games in 2016.
At the end of the second year you have the
opportunity to study advanced modules in
General Biomedical Engineering or specialise
in an Electrical Engineering, a Mechanical
Engineering or a Biomolecular Engineering
pathway. There is also the opportunity to
undertake a year in industry or study abroad
in the fourth year of the MEng. The year in
industry extends the MEng to five years,

follow the same core modules
for the first year of study covering
biological chemistry and
microbiology, biology of organisms,
cell biology, genetics, ecology and
evolution. In the second year, all
students study applied molecular
biology and genetics while building
on first-year training in statistics
and programming. From the spring
of your second year, you begin to
specialise. We offer a broad range
of optional modules, covering
topics such as developmental
biology, immunology, virology,
ecology, evolutionary biology
and microbiology.

Many of the final-year modules offered can

be taken by students on any of our Biological
Sciences, Biochemistry and Biotechnology
degrees. Biological Sciences students can
choose modules from the cell and molecular
biology stream currently including
topics such as neurobiology, infection
and immunity, synthetic biology, plant
biotechnology and bioinformatics or the
ecosystem stream, with options including
biodiversity, ecology and a tropical biology
field course.

BIOCHEMISTRY AND
BIOTECHNOLOGY

Biochemistry aims to understand biology

with a primary focus on the molecular
(protein, DNA) and cellular level.
Biotechnology places a further emphasis
on understanding how such biochemical
knowledge can be applied, e.g. translated
into the manufacture of new products such
as drugs and diagnostics, or to catalyse
the conversion of solar into chemical
energy (biofuels).
Biochemistry and Biotechnology students
follow the same core modules for the first
two years of study before specialising,
heading overseas, or spending a year in
industry in their third year. Core modules
in the first year include biological chemistry,
molecular biology, cell biology, and proteins
and enzymes. In the second year the core
programme continues, covering topics in
genes and genomics, integrative cell biology
and macromolecular structure and function.
A further module is taken from outside the
Biochemistry syllabus (often a humanities
or business module).
You have increasing freedom in the final
year to follow your own interests, choosing
from a wide range of topics such as damage
and repair in biological systems, cancer,
medical glycobiology, systems neuroscience,
synthetic biology, symbiosis, plant immunity
and disease, and bioinformatics.

Chemical engineers at
Imperial are exploring using
microscopic bubbles to deliver
drugs, by coating the bubbles
with nano-sized drug particles.
The bubbles are tiny enough
to be injected safely into the
bloodstream, and the drugs would
only be released in areas of the
body where they were needed.
The idea is that this would make
treatments more targeted and
reduce adverse side effects.

IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON

The Department
of Chemistry
Imperials Department of Chemistry
has its historical roots as the original
Royal College of Chemistry (RCC), founded
in the 1840s with the support of Parliament
to help ensure that chemistry in the UK
was both practical and profitable. Today the
Department is based in four buildings across
the South Kensington Campus, including
one of the earliest RCC buildings.
We remain true to our founding principles
by placing a strong emphasis on a practical
chemistry education that is relevant
to industry. Our extensive links to the
private sector are testament to this. This is
supported by a commitment to researchled teaching, delivering a curriculum that is
informed both by world leading chemistry
research and innovations in education.
All of our degrees include extensive
experience of practical chemistry, across
the themes of making, measuring and
modelling molecules. This provides a
framework for developing transferable skills
as well as an understanding of 21st century
chemistry and the scientific method.
Our broad range of degrees, including those

What our graduates do

CHEMISTRY WITH MEDICINAL
CHEMISTRY DEGREES

You will take part in a wide range of laboratorybased activities in the Department, but these
are not limited to the traditional synthetic
chemistry labs: you will also be trained in
measurement science, analytical chemistry
and in molecular modelling.

What you study

Years one and two of all degrees follow
the same core course content, supplemented
by optional modules that are designed
to match your chosen course of study.
This structure offers you the opportunity to
transfer between our chemistry degrees at a later
stage providing you have studied the appropriate
optional subjects in years one and two.

SINGLE HONOURS CHEMISTRY

Our core chemistry degrees (F100 and F103)

cover topics in inorganic, organic and physical
chemistry in all years of study. In the fourth
year of our MSci courses you can follow a
broad or specialised programme by choosing
from a selection of advanced topics, including
Nanomaterials, Robot Chemistry and Advanced
Catalysis. The taught content of this final year is
informed and inspired by leading research within
the Department and its structure allows for the
inclusion of ground-breaking research outcomes.

CHEMISTRY WITH MOLECULAR PHYSICS

These challenging degrees are delivered by the

Departments of Chemistry, Mathematics (page
118) and Physics (page 130) to focus on work at the
boundary of these three disciplines, for example
nano-engineering. Graduates of this course will
gain strengthened knowledge of the physical
and mathematical background for mastering
physical methods of modern chemistry.
90

IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON

These degrees combine our Single

Honours Chemistry degree (F103) with
modules that focus particularly on the
industrial development, production
and quality control of new drugs.
They are ideal for students intending
to work in the pharmaceutical and
similar industries, and for those
interested in chemical research
in fields allied to medicine.

DID YOU KNOW?

Imperial chemists and colleagues
at UCL have created a self-cleaning
paint that is resistant to damage and
can be applied to clothes, paper, glass
or steel. The tough paint is extremely
water-repellent, causing water to
ball up and roll off the surface,
taking any dirt with it.

Chemistry graduates are recruited

into practically every branch of
industry. Over half of our graduates
pursue a PhD, while others work
in roles as diverse as industrial
development, production and quality
control of processes, marketing,
and teaching. Importantly, our MSci
programmes ensure that our degrees
are recognised throughout Europe,
where longer undergraduate degree
programmes are the norm.

CHEMISTRY WITH
MANAGEMENT DEGREES

The four-year Chemistry with

Management course consists of the
first three years of F100 followed by
a final year in the Business School.
The five-year course is the same
as the four-year course, with the
addition of an industrial placement
in the penultimate year prior to
the year of management study.

FRENCH/GERMAN/SPANISH
FOR SCIENCE DEGREES

These degrees allow you to

spend an academic year studying
at a French-, German- or Spanishspeaking university. They combine
the chemistry elements of the MSci
Chemistry degree with training in
the language and culture of the
country in which you are studying.

YEAR IN INDUSTRY DEGREES

These degrees allow you to gain

experience of using chemistry in an
industrial context. They are one year
longer than their standard counterparts
to accommodate the year in industry
between your third and final year,
while still achieving the same
comprehensive chemical content.

RESEARCH ABROAD DEGREES

These degrees combine our four-year MSci

Chemistry degree (F103) with the chance to
carry out the final-year research project and
some final-year modules in a partner university
abroad. If you choose to study in Europe
operating in another language, you will also
receive support to develop fluency in that
language, preparing you for careers overseas.

LABORATORY WORK

Laboratory work forms a key part of all our

courses. These classes (including supplementary
workshops, computational chemistry laboratories
and classes in scientific programming using
Python) are integral to your study experience.
They are designed to develop your practical,
analytical and theoretical skills to help you gain
confidence in applying a large number of different
experimental approaches to problem solving.

JOINT MATHEMATICS
AND COMPUTER SCIENCE

With the spread of computing procedures

and mathematical ideas into many areas,
there is high demand for professionals
who are expert in both.
These courses are offered jointly by the
Departments of Computing and Mathematics.
They are designed as mathematical courses
orientated towards computing science and
provide a firm foundation in mathematics,
particularly in pure mathematics, numerical
analysis and statistics. They also cover
all the essentials of computer science,
with an emphasis on developing software
and reasoning formally about it, as well as
more theoretical topics. They are therefore
suited to mathematically able students
with interests in both subjects.
You will take set modules from each
Department in each of the first two years,
with some options available in the second
year. In the third and fourth years you
choose modules from either Department
to support your particular interests and
areas of specialisation.
All students undertake both group

What you study

ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC
ENGINEERING

Years one and two follow a core programme

covering the fundamentals of electrical and
electronic engineering in areas such as analogue
and digital electronics, software engineering,
circuit analysis, semiconductor devices, and
mathematics. In years three and four you can
choose mainly technical modules in specialist
areas such as energy systems, communications
or computing, alongside a small number of nontechnical and business options. Alternatively you
can reduce the number of technical modules and
choose a substantial management component,
delivered by Imperial College Business School.
There is also a study abroad option (see below).
All MEng students choose between a six-month
industrial placement or a group design project
in the third year, and undertake a substantial
individual project in their final year.

ELECTRONIC AND INFORMATION

ENGINEERING

These degrees provide an understanding of the

entire stack of modern networked computers,
from the design and architecture of the CPU
in a smartphone, to the information theory and
wireless protocols connecting it to the internet,
and on to the operating systems and databases

looking at poorly
preserved fragments of 75-million-yearold dinosaur fossils have found remnants
that have some similarities to red blood
cells and collagen fibres. Previously,
researchers have only found soft tissue
in fossils that have been well preserved,
which are rare. The hope is that scientists
may be able to use even poorly preserved
fossils to get a better understanding
of dinosaur biology.

112

IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON

Year two is designed to deepen

your knowledge of the geosciences
with modules in geochemistry and
geophysics alongside sedimentary
processes, palaeontology, igneous
and metamorphic processes,
and earth resources. This is
complemented by further field
trips, currently to the Pyrenees and
Scotland. Geophysics students take
additional mathematical classes,
and study numerical methods
through global geophysics. There is
also a field trip, currently to Cyprus.
In years three and four you
specialise according to your
chosen degree (see below) and
will participate in further field trips,
take core and optional modules,
and complete an independent field
study and research project linked
to your chosen degree title.

GEOLOGY

Geology is the study of the Earth

and how its interior, surface and
atmosphere interact. Geologists
study the world through observation
and make inferences based on
understanding of fundamental
scientific principles. We use fieldwork
to help you gain experience in

identifying rocks and interpreting the

physical (including tectonic) processes
that may have been involved in their
formation. Specialist modules also include
paleobiology, paleo-oceanography, igneous
and metamorphic processes, basin analysis,
hydrothermal, and ore-forming processes.

GEOPHYSICS

These degrees are designed for students

with a specific interest in mathematics
or physics and the application of physical
laws to the study of the Earth. While you
share some core modules with other
degrees, we place greater emphasis on
mathematics and physics subjects and
modelling techniques. You will also gain
experience with technical equipment
and specialist software.

YEAR ABROAD DEGREES

Year three placements are available in

the USA, Canada or Australia, or via the
Erasmus scheme in France or the Netherlands.
While abroad, you study assessed modules,
with grades achieved counting directly towards
your Imperial degree. Tuition is in English except
in France and Spain where proficiency in the
relevant language is required before you go
language preparation is available at the College
(see page 19). Selection is competitive due to
limited places and is normally only available
to students who are on target to achieve a
first class degree by the end of year two.
Please note that all field trips referenced here are included
in the cost of tuition, except for a contribution to food costs
on fully catered field trips (currently approx 25/week) and the
Year 2 independent mapping project which Geology students, and
some Geology and Geophysics students, undertake in a location
of their choice. Costs vary by location.

PETROLEUM GEOSCIENCE

Petroleum geoscience uses a fundamental

understanding of the Earth and its
past to find and responsibly exploit
petroleum resources, with minimal
environmental impact. This makes
it key to the worlds energy future.
Specialist modules include basin
analysis, and advanced clastic
and carbonate sedimentology.

what can you study?

What you study

Some topics in university-level mathematics
are a direct continuation of those at A-level,
but others will introduce you to new ways
of thinking. These topics are concerned
with the logical structure of arguments,
the proper definition of mathematical objects,
the design of sophisticated mathematical
models, and the legitimacy of computations.
All students follow the same study
programme for the first two years, providing
a firm foundation in areas essential to further
study including: algebra, analysis, mechanics,
probability and statistics, complex analysis,
differential equations, multivariable calculus,
and numerical analysis. This means its easy
to transfer between any of these courses
during this time.
During the second year (or third year for
MSci students) students who are interested
in a teaching career may be able to transfer
to the Mathematics with Education course
to gain Qualified Teacher Status alongside
their mathematics degree. Graduates of
this programme will be able, on graduation,
to teach in a secondary school as a Newly
Qualified Teacher. To be eligible, you
must pass a suitability interview and
be performing at a 2.1 standard.
A key feature of the third and fourth years
is flexibility. Some students remain broad
in their interests, while others prefer to
specialise in areas such as statistics and
mathematical computation see degree
list on page 119.
You can choose from a wide range of options
in areas including pure mathematics,
mathematical physics, applied mathematics,
mathematical methods, numerical analysis
and statistics, as well as business or
humanities modules. You will also work
on individual and group projects
throughout your degree.

IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON

Students on the Mathematics

with Education course will have
the same choice of optional
mathematics modules in Year 3 and
Year 4 (MSci) as students pursuing
the straight Mathematics degrees.
In addition, they will attend teaching
training courses, delivered at
Imperial by Canterbury Christ Church
University, and undertake a series
of in-school placements.

What our graduates do

YEAR IN EUROPE DEGREES

Imperials Department of
Mathematics is one of only a few
such departments in the UK to offer
a year in Europe as an integral part
of your MSci degree. This provides
the opportunity for you to challenge
yourself in a different academic
and cultural environment.
The year abroad takes place in year
three. Opportunities are currently
available at leading universities
in France, Germany, Spain and
Switzerland via the Erasmus
scheme. You will normally be taught
in the language of the host country
so an acceptable proficiency in the
appropriate language is required
by the end of year two language
preparation is available at Imperial
(see page 19).
Selection for placements, some of
which are competitive due to limited
places, takes place in year two. It is

what can you study?

What you study

All students spend the first two years following
the same core programme to gain the fundamental
knowledge and intellectual and practical skills
that are required by all mechanical engineers. This
includes developing your skills in workshop practice,
and conducting your own design, make and test
projects in both years. The subjects studied currently
include computing, fluid mechanics, heat transfer,
materials, mathematics, mechanics, thermodynamics,
stress analysis, technical presentation skills, and
management and business for engineers.
In year three you complete the core programme
with topics in machine system dynamics and
thermodynamics and energy. You also undertake
a literature survey project and a major group design,
make and test project and study a wide range
of technical and non-technical subjects, which
you can choose according to your interests.
In year four you undertake a substantial individual
project and choose further Masters level topics. These
vary from year to year, but may include subjects such as
design, art and creativity; manufacturing technology and
management; aircraft engine technology; and vehicle
propulsion technology. You may also study specialist
topics from other engineering departments, in areas
such as biomaterials, computer assistive and rehabilitive
devices or sustainable electrical systems, as well as
a language or a humanities subject such as history or
philosophy through Imperial Horizons (see page 18).

MECHANICAL WITH NUCLEAR ENGINEERING

Its possible to graduate with a specialist MEng

Mechanical with Nuclear Engineering degree if you
cover the requisite nuclear-focused modules in the
third and fourth years. These currently include an
introduction to nuclear energy and nuclear chemical

what can you study?

What you study

What our graduates do

MBBS in Singapore

We offer three routes to achieving the MBBS

qualification at Imperial College London:

Achieving an MBBS degree from

Imperial provides you with a primary
medical qualification (PMQ). This
entitles you to provisional registration
with the General Medical Council
(GMC) and license to practise in
approved Foundation Year 1 posts,
subject only to acceptance by the
GMC that your fitness to practise is
not impaired. You will need to apply
for a Foundation Year 1 post during
the final year of your undergraduate
course through the UK Foundation
Programme Office selection scheme,
which allocates these posts on a
competitive basis. So far, all suitably
qualified UK graduates have found
a place on the Foundation Year 1
programme, but this cannot
be guaranteed.

The Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine

(LKCMedicine) offers a five-year
undergraduate programme leading to
a medical degree (MBBS) awarded jointly
by Imperial and Nanyang Technological
University (NTU) in Singapore. It is targeted
primarily at Singaporean students.

MBBS/BSc MEDICINE

This degree is designed for those who do not yet have

a first degree in a biological science subject. It leads
to the award of both a BSc and an MBBS. The course is
delivered through a combination of classroom-based
study and extensive clinical experience.

Students learning
to take blood as part
of a practical in the
Sir Alexander Fleming
laboratory

Over the course of the programme you will gain clinical

experience at many of our partner NHS Trusts, which
are carefully selected to give you a broad and balanced
clinical learning experience. Years one and two focus
on the scientific basis of medicine and the foundations
of clinical practice including early clinical experience.

Year six includes a range of

clinical attachments, professional
work experience, courses,
specialised study modules
and an elective period.

Year three consists of three 10-week clinical

attachments, which may be at any of the hospitals
associated with Imperial. You will spend year four
working towards the BSc by undertaking a series
of modules and a supervised research project or a
specialist course in an area of particular scientific
or medical interest see our website for details on
current BSc options. Year five includes a dedicated
pathology course followed by six clinical specialties.

This course, for those who already

have at least a 2.1 in an appropriate
biological science degree, allows you
to achieve the MBBS qualification in
five years. The first two years focus
on science and foundation clinical
skills. Tailored opportunities to
pursue research and scholarship
will also be provided. Years three to
five follow years three, five and six of
the six-year programme. You will be
exempted from the BSc Honours year
of the MBBS/BSc programme.

IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON

Exceptional students on either

of the above MBBS programmes may
be offered the opportunity to include
a PhD as part of their course. This
consists of three years research,
taken either after completion of
the BSc for those following the
six-year MBBS programme or after
the second year of the Graduate
programme. After the three years
of research are complete, you
will resume the rest of the MBBS
programme, graduating with both
an MBBS and a PhD qualification.

On successful completion of the

Foundation Year 1 programme you will
be eligible to apply for full registration
with the GMC before entering
Foundation Year 2. Doctors need full
registration with a licence to practise
for unsupervised medical practice in
the NHS or UK private practice.

LKCMedicines innovative programme

is recognised by the Singapore Medical
Council. It has been designed and
developed by Imperial in collaboration
with LKCMedicine faculty to produce doctors
who will meet Singapores healthcare needs.
It emphasises the clinical relevance of the
basic sciences and early patient interaction
from the very beginning of the course,
training you to put a patients individual
needs at the centre of all care.
You will gain a thorough understanding
of the scientific basis for medicine, as well
as broader management and communication
skills. You will also benefit from innovative
and interactive approaches to learning,
including extensive use of simulation,
team-based learning and e-learning.

In addition to medical practice,

graduates of the School have entered
such diverse careers as biomedical
research, the pharmaceutical industry,
scientific journalism and healthcare
management.

Graduates of this programme will serve

a five-year (Singaporeans) or six-year
(non-Singaporeans) service obligation,
excluding housemanship or first-year
residency training. You will receive career
guidance during the course, including
guidance on applying for postgraduate
medical training.
