RELATIVE ATOMIC MASS AND RELATIVE MOLECULAR MASS

Relative Atomic Mass, Ar

1.
2.
3.
4.

The atomic mass of an atom found by comparing it with a standard atom is called relative atomic mass.
The modern standard to determine relative atomic mass is based on the carbon-12 atom.
Carbon-12 is chosen because it is a solid and can be easily handled, also used as a reference standard
in the mass spectrometer.
Relative atomic mass of an element is the number of times the mass of an atom is greater than 1/12 of
the mass of a carbon-12 atom. The relative mass of a carbon-12 atom is 12.000.
Relative atomic mass =

Relative molecular mass, Mr

The relative molecular mass of substance is the number of time the molecule is greater than 1/12 of the
mass of a carbon-12 atom .
Relative atomic mass =

2.

The relative molecular mass for a molecule can be calculated if the following are known:
a) the molecular formula of the substance
b) the relative atomic mass of each element in the molecule

Example:

(relative atomic mass: C;12, O;16)

Relative molecular mass of carbon dioxide, CO2 = 12 + (2x16) = 44

The relative formula mass of a substance is the number of times on ionic substances is greater than
1/12 of a carbon -12 atom.
The method used to determine relative formula mass is similar to the method used to determine the
relative molecular mass of a substance.

2.

Calculate the relative formula mass of copper(II) chloride,

CuCl2 = 64 + (2x35.5) = 135

3.2 THE MOLE AND THE NUMBER OF PARTICLES

1.
2.
3.

A mole is an amount of substance that contains as many particles as the number of atoms in
exactly 12 g of carbon-12.
The number of particles in one mole of substance, is called Avogadro constant or the
Avogadro number NA which is 6.02 x 1023 .
Mol is a standard unit of mole. One mole of substance contains 6.02 x 10 23 particle(atom,
molecule, ion - depend the type of substance)
1 mol of atomic substance contains 6.02 x 1023 atoms.
1 mol of molecular substance contains 6.02 x 1023 molecules.
