Introduction

Introduction

1.1

Designated Use
The CP RC is designated for performing high-voltage tests on GIS. The testing
system consists of the CP TR8 providing galvanic separation, the CP CR4 and
CP CR6 to compensate the reactive power, and the power voltage transformer
(VT). The power VT is part of the GIS and not provided by OMICRON
electronics. It replaces the standard VT inside the GIS and is designed to
withstand the needed test current.
Caution: It has to be guaranteed that the windings of the voltage transformer
can withstand the needed test current.
The busbars, the breakers, the disconnectors, the CTs and VTs inside a GIS
represent capacitive load on the high-voltage side of the voltage transformer
which is transformed to the low-voltage side by the square of the turns ratio.
Without compensating this reactive power, the CPC 100 is not able to deliver the
needed total power. The CP RC and the capacitive load build a parallel
resonance circuit. To get the exact resonance point, the test frequency is tuned
to resonance.

CP TR8
The CP TR8 provides galvanic separation of the booster output of the CPC 100
for resonance circuiting with the GIS. With a ratio of 1:1 and an inductivity of

Operation

Operation
This chapter provides a general description of the measurement setup.
Furthermore, it gives an overview of the compensation ranges for different
connection versions of the CP TR8, CP CR6 and CP CR4, as well as an
instruction on how to set up. Moreover, the HV Resonance Test System test
card to perform the high-voltage measurement is described.
As already mentioned earlier in this manual, different connection versions are
possible and/or required, depending on the load. All possible connection
versions are described below.
Warning: Use only designated connection options to prevent a life risk!

2.1

General
Independent of the connection option used, the following measurement
connections have to be provided (see Figure 2-1 on page 16):

For current measurement on the power VTs input, connect the current
transformer delivered in the package.

Press the Emergency Stop button on the CPC 100 front panel. Continue with
connecting only if the green warning light is on.

Connect terminals k (S1) and l (S2) to the I AC input of the CPC 100.

For voltage measurement, connect the a and n terminals of the power VT

(low-voltage side) to the V1 AC input on the CPC 100. If this is not possible,
the Measurement connections A and B of the CP TR8 can be used instead.

General measurement setup

In all connection options, all elements of the setup have to be grounded using
the equipotential ground connection. For this purpose, use the grounding
cables delivered in the package.

Connect the EXT. BOOSTER output of the CPC 100 to the BOOSTER
INPUT of the CP TR8 with the booster cable.

Warning: Do not connect a reactor in serial with the CP TR8 output.

Dangerous voltages can be generated!

Operation

Compensation Ranges
Table 2-1 shows the possible compensation ranges. The indicated capacitances
refer to the low-voltage side of the VT. In order to calculate the maximum
capacitance on the high-voltage side, the ratio of the VT has to be considered.
Example: Ratio of the VT = 110 kV:100 V, C (HV side) = 1 nF:
C (LV side) = 1 nF x (110,000/100)2 = 1210 F

Preparation

Short-circuit all low-voltage terminals.

All unused VTs of the GIS have to be short-circuited on the low-voltage

terminals.
Caution: Short-circuit the low-voltage terminals of the non-used phases! This
is important since coupling between the phases will result in voltage induction
in the non-tested phases. Thus, the test voltage from phase to phase cannot
be reached.

Measurement

3.3

Measurement of the Leakage Reactance

This procedure is only required, if no direct measurement on the high-voltage
side is possible, for example, due to a second VT or voltage divider.

Provide the measurement setup as shown in Figure 3-3 "Example for

measuring the leakage reactance" and make sure to short-circuit the highvoltage side of the voltage transformer.

Figure 3-3

Example for measuring the leakage reactance

Insert a Quick test card and set the output range to 6A AC, the output
frequency to 100 Hz, and the output current to 5.00 A.

Set the 1st measurement channel to V1 AC, the 2nd measurement channel to
I AC, and the calculate value to R,X.

Press the I/O (test start/stop) push-button to start the test.

Press Keep Result and the I/O (test start/stop) push-button to stop the test.
