Picture-Pencil Holder Assignment

Now that you have passed your Tech Safety Rules and Power Tools quizzes, it is time to
try the machines out for yourself and receive your full license for the tech room! Your
assignment is to create a picture-pencil holder that uses each of the machines at least
twice.

Materials:
1 piece of wood, approximately 10cm x 15cm
1 piece of jinx wood, 10-15cm long
grid paper
ruler
pencil
glue

Pre-Construction Procedure:
1. Trace your piece of wood onto graph paper.
2. Brainstorm ideas about what you would like your picture-pencil holder to look like.
3. Develop a design of the picture-pencil holder on the grid paper. Your holder should
be designed so that you use each power tool twice (e.g. two straight cuts with the
band saw, two curvy cuts with the scroll saw, etc.).
4. Include measurements on your design on the grid paper.
5. Number each step in the build process on your sketch and fill in the chart below.
6. Submit your sketch and chart to Mr. Watt for approval.

Construction Procedure:
1. Cut out your sketch and trace it onto your piece of wood using a pencil. Be sure to
use a ruler for any straight edges. Check when complete
2. Read your notes and quizzes on safety and the power tools. Be sure you know how
to use all four machines safely! Show your piece of wood with all lines drawn on it to
Mr. Watt for permission to begin using the machines. Check when complete
3. Before using each power tool for the first time, ask Mr. Watt to come and watch
you. Using the steps on your chart, construct your design. Remember to stay slightly
outside of the lines when you are cutting with the saws. Check when complete
4. After using the saws and drill press, use the power sander to sand your wood down
exactly onto your pencil lines. Remember to ask Mr. Watt to watch you use this tool
for the first time. Check when complete
5. Once your wood pieces are sanded to the correct shape, you must now hand sand to
make them smooth. Start with the lowest numbered sand paper and work your way
up to obtain a smooth surface. Check when complete
6. Fasten all of your pieces together using glue. Use a folded piece of scrap paper as a
spacer where your picture will go between the two pieces of jinx wood. Be sure to
clamp or hold the jinx wood while the glue dries. Check when complete
