Hazards
1. Exposure to Ionising radiation.
Note:
Star Refrigeration will always subcontract the actual inspection of welds to an approved competent specialist
subcontractor who will notify the relevant authority that such work is to be carried out. However, The notification to
other site users and the cordoning off in the area where the weld inspections are being done may often be the Star
engineers responsibility. Therefore, a joint risk assessment may be required.
Star will always endeavour to send welds off-site for radiographic inspection, however, where this is not possible the
following must be followed:
Details
1. Award the inspection contract to a Star approved supplier
2. Stars purchase order should require that;
a. The contractor produces a risk assessment. Taking into account not only his
own employees but also those as highlighted above
b. The contractor produces a method statement including a plan defining the
exclusion zone.
Communication
1. The risk assessment and its controls will be communicated to all those likely to be affected
by the operation. In some circumstances a joint risk assessment may be required.
1. Safe access must be agreed between the person in control of the site, Star and the
contractor.
2. Access to the area where radiographic inspection is to take place must be controlled and
preferably prohibited this will usually mean that the work will need to be done outside
normal working hours.
3. How access is to be controlled must be agreed between the person in control of the site,
Star and the contractor.
The Star site supervisor will:
1. Check the contractor has given sufficient notice to the HSE that radiographic inspection is
being undertaken. This is a legal requirement..
2. Ensure that the contractor complies with his risk assessment.
3. Ensure that the contractor complies with his method statement
4. Assist with any safety co-ordination between the contractor and the person in control of the
site.
5. Ensure that Emergency action procedures are agreed.

Moderate scores; Thought should be given to reducing risk, but the cost and time requirements of prevention
should be carefully considered and limited.
Substantial:
Work should not be started until the risk has been reduced, for work in progress, urgent
action is required. Considerable resources may have to be allocated.
Intolerable:
If unlimited resources cannot reduce risk, work will be prohibited.
YES
Note : This risk assessment is only valid when all control measures are in place before the work or activity
commences and will be reviewed 19/04/2013 or earlier if the nature of the work changes or there is a
