Easter Egg Celebration

Sunday, March 27 at 9:45 am - FLC
Easter eggs have been a Christian tradition for hundreds of
years. Childrens Ministries is hosting its annual Easter Egg
Hunt for all children through the sixth grade. Babies and children 18 months and younger need to bring a dozen eggs
filled with age-appropriate goodies and their Easter baskets.
Children 19 months of age through sixth grade should bring
a dozen treat-filled eggs in their baskets. Basket parking is
available in the hallway just outside the Sanctuary.

A Note From The Pastor

I love the Easter season and the resurrection songs that we sing. One of my
favorites talks about who we are as Gods people and disciples of Jesus. In
1979 William M. James wrote Easter People, Raise Your Voices. The first
verse is:
Easter people, raise your voices,
sounds of heaven in earth should ring.
Christ has brought us heavens choices;
heavenly music, let it ring.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Easter people, let us sing.
United Methodist Hymnal, #304
The Easter victory is about Christs action in our lives it means that the risen
Christ is Lord of our lives right now. It really means:
Every day to us is Easter, with its resurrection song.
When in trouble move the faster to our God who rights the wrong.
Alleluia! Alleluia! See the power of heavenly throngs.
What a wonderful way to celebrate the greatest holiday in the church. In the
early church, every Sunday was a little Easter celebration. Keep on being
Easter People!

Peace,

A Note From The Associate Pastor

28

One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them
well, he asked him, Which commandment is the first of all? 29 Jesus answered, The first is, Hear, O Israel: the
Lord our God, the Lord is one; 30 you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and
with all your mind, and with all your strength. 31 The second is this, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
There is no other commandment greater than these. Mark 12:28-31 (NRSV)
I think that for most of us, this is a verse that is fairly familiar. What you might not know is that the greatest commandments
are also found in the Old Testament in Deuteronomy 6. Since the time of Moses, this passage has been a centerpiece of
the Jewish faith. Yet when Jesus quotes this in Mark, I want to point out that something changes. Deuteronomy only includes three ways in which we are told to love God--heart, soul and strength. But in Mark, Jesus adds that we must love
God with our mind as well. Though for many of us loving our God with our mind can feel like a strange concept, yet the
writers of the Gospels thought it was important enough to include this change in both Matthew and Luke as well (Mt 22:3440; Lk 10:25-28).
This Lenten season, I have made it a practice to intentionally find ways to love God with my mind. So far, this has been
through reading books and listening to podcasts, through spiritual discussions with friends and family, and through creative
outlets like art and poetry. And like any spiritual practice, there are some days it is more meaningful than others, but overall
I can tell you that it has drawn me deeper into my relationship with Christ. I think one of the great things about being a United Methodist is that our faith does not require us to check our minds at the door when we walk into the sanctuary. Along
with tradition, experience, and scripture, our reason is an integral part of how we seek Gods will in our present world. It is
my prayer for all of us that we intentionally seek ways to be lifelong learners examining the world around us, testing our
faith with our reason, and taking seriously the words of Jesus that love of God includes heart, soul, strength and mind.

Blessings,

Palm Sunday/Holy Week Schedule

Palm Sunday, March 20
Palm Sunday recalls Jesus' triumphal entrance into Jerusalem the week before his death. Jesus
rode a donkey while people waved palm branches, laid their cloaks in his path, and shouted
"Hosanna!" To remember this event, both Worship Services on Sunday morning will include a processional with palms.

Holy Week Prayer Room

Prayer Ministry will offer an opportunity to journey
in prayer with Jesus during Holy Week. Beginning
Monday, March 21 through Friday, March 25, a
Prayer Room will be offered with a series of nine areas reflecting scripture of Christ's last days. The
Prayer Room will be available from 8:30 am - 4:30 pm, Monday to Thursday and 8:30 am - 2:00 pm
on Friday. Everyone is welcome. Come as your schedule permits. For more information, please
refer to the brochure, Holy Week Prayer Room, available in the hallway outside the Sanctuary.
This year Childrens Ministries is pleased to offer children a Prayer Room of their own. The
Prayer Room will be open during Holy Week, the same hours as the adult Prayer Room. Adults are invited to assist children through the
Prayer Room stations located in the Godly Play Room (Room 212). In addition to the regular prayer room hours, you are invited to join us in
the Adult Prayer Room and the Childrens Prayer Room on Wednesday, March 23 rd between 6:00-7:30 pm. Please allow for each experience to
last approximately 30 minutes; if you are bringing a child, they can experience the childrens prayer room at the same time you are enjoying the
adult prayer room . We hope that you will be blessed with this Holy Week offering; it is a special and unique experience.

Community Holy Week Noon Services - March 21-25

Sponsored by Nacogdoches Ministerial Alliance - 12:00 noon Worship in the Sanctuary featuring pastors and music leaders from churches throughout the community - 12:30 pm Luncheon in the Family Life Center sponsored by churches
throughout the Community.

Maundy Thursday Service - March 24 at 6:00 pm - FLC

Maundy Thursday, or Holy Thursday, is the Thursday of Holy Week where we
commemorate the institution of the Lords Supper, or Holy Communion. Maundy
is from the Latin word for command. It reminds us of Jesus words in John
13:34, A new commandment I give to you. At this service we are reminded of
Jesus and the disciples celebrating the Passover meal. Prior to the meal Jesus washes the feet of the disciples to remind
them, and us, of our role as servants. This year our Maundy Thursday service will be held in the Family Life Center at 6:00 pm. We will meet
around tables much like the Disciples did at that first Lords Supper. This is a family-friendly service where all ages are welcome. Our music will be
led by members of the Contemporary Service Praise Team.

Good Friday Service - Friday, March 25 at 6:00 pm in the Sanctuary

Good Friday is the day when we remember Jesus Christs death on the cross. This somber service is sometimes
called A Service of Darkness, or Tenebrae Service. Tenebrae comes from the Latin word meaning darkness. Our
service this year will center around the seven last words Jesus spoke from the cross. The service will be in the Sanctuary at 6:00 pm, and the Chancel Choir will lead our music as candles are extinguished after each song and scripture
reading. During the service children are invited to Room 212 to experience the Childrens Prayer Room.

Easter Prayer Vigil

FUMC will offer an Easter Prayer Vigil beginning one hour after the Tenebrae Service on Good Friday and continue until sunrise on Easter morning. The prayer vigil will begin in the Holy Week Prayer Room located in the
church's parlor. Beginning at noon on Holy Saturday, the remaining hours will be scheduled for prayer at your
home. Scheduled prayer times are available to give you, or you and your family, a personal and uninterrupted time
for prayer as you remember the Passion of our Lord and His glorious Resurrection on Easter morning. Sign-up sheets will be located in the hall-

way outside the Sanctuary.

GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP BEGINNING - April 5

One of the great challenges of life is the death of someone we love, and one of the great services we can provide to each other in our community of faith is comfort and support through a time of loss and grief. Sharing ourselves,
our pain, our loneliness and our hopes with a trusted group of friends can be very healing. We might prefer to withdraw
or to distract ourselves with work and responsibilities, but we know that healing from loss first requires accepting the
reality of the loss and experiencing it fully.
When you have lost someone you love, it takes much longer to heal than most people realize. But with Gods
help and the caring of those who have walked the road before us, we can heal and find new meaning in our lives. If
you are suffering from fresh or prolonged grief, please consider joining one of our grief support groups at First United
Methodist Church. You can help yourself as well as others.
The next group forming will begin meeting on Tuesday, April 5, 2016. Meetings will be held from 6:00 to 7:30
pm on Tuesdays at the First United Methodist Church, 201 East Hospital Street. The small group will journey together,
meeting one evening every other week, through a 10-session course of study, based on Understanding Your Grief:
Ten Essential Touchstones for Finding Hope and Healing Your Heart by Alan Wolfelt, Ph.D.
Everyone is welcome to participate, regardless of the timing of your grief and regardless of your faith background or church affiliation. Whether your loss was one month ago or four years ago, if you are hurting, there can be
great benefit from receiving the support of others who share this unique bond.
The registration fee for the group is $25.00, which includes the cost of the study book. To register, please contact Judy or Jim Buckingham at 569-6160 or judy.p.buckingham@gmail.com.
