CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
The fishing industry includes any industry or activity concerned with taking,
culturing, processing, preserving, storing, transporting, marketing or selling fish or
fish products. It is defined by the food and agriculture and organization as including
recreational, subsistence and commercial fishing and the harvesting, processing ,
and marketing sectors. The commercial activity is aimed at the delivery of fish and
other seafood products for human consumption or as input factors in other industrial
processes. Directly or indirectly, the livelihood of over 500 million people in
developing countries depends on fisheries and aquaculture. Aquaculture includes
different kinds of activities such as fish farming, oyster farming and shrimp farming
among others. Aquaculture can be practiced in brackish water, freshwater and marine
water depending on the culture environment where diverse range of species such as
fishes, mollusks and crustaceans are farmed. The aquaculture industry accounted for
50% of world's fish food in 2012. Increasing consumer awareness regarding health
benefits offered by consumption of fish and fish products is expected to be one of the
primary factors driving aquaculture production. In addition, reduction in global catch
of fishes is another key parameter which is expected to boost aquaculture production
within the next few years. However, the aquaculture market is vulnerable to adverse
climatic conditions which led to outbreak of several diseases hampering the
production. Increasing adoption of poly-culture systems such as rice and fish farming
is expected to open new opportunities for the growth of the market by providing
additional food and income by diversifying farm activities. Presently, the market share
of aquaculture in the world fisheries industry is less than the captured fish market.
According to Organization of Economic Co-operation Development (OECD), the
capture fisheries' output is expected to rise by 5% by 2022 whereas aquaculture is
expected to increase by 35%. The aquaculture market is expected to surpass capture
fisheries market as the main source for human consumption by the end of 2015.
Aquaculture practiced in freshwater was the largest culture environment segment
accounting for over 60% of the overall aquaculture production in 2012.

analyzed and forecast by taking into account current trends on a global and regional
level geographically, the market has been segmented into North America, Europe,
Asia Pacific (excluding China), China and Rest of the World (RoW). Analysis and
forecast is based on current trends and covers the period from 2013 to 2019.
Detailed profiles of certain leading companies are covered in this report, including
companies such as Blue Ridge Aquaculture, Cermaq ASA, Cooke Aquaculture.among
others. The company profile covers attributes such as company overview, financial
overview, product portfolio, SWOT analysis, business strategies and recent
developments.
Aquaculture includes different kinds of activities such as fish farming, oyster farming
and shrimp farming among others. Aquaculture can be practiced in brackish water,

5% by 2022 whereas aquaculture is expected to increase by 35%. The aquaculture
market is expected to surpass capture fisheries market as the main source for human
consumption by the end of 2015.Aquaculture practiced in freshwater was the largest
culture environment segment accounting for over 60% of the overall aquaculture
production in 2012. Majority of the aquaculture from freshwater throughout the world
is carried out in ponds made from concrete and other materials. Fish population in
natural water bodies such as oceans and rivers has reduced on account of over fishing.
Page | 6

Owing to this factor, freshwater aquaculture has served as an alternative since the past
few decades and is expected to follow a similar trend into the forecast period.
Aquaculture practiced in marine water is expected to grow at an above average rate.
Increasing consumer demand for sea water species is expected to drive the market for
marine water aquaculture over the next few years.Carps were the major product
segment present within the industry and accounted for over 35% of the market share
in 2012. They have been one of the fastest growing fish species which dominated the
aquaculture production owing to their compatibility in less than ideal environmental
conditions and increasing use in poly culture systems such as rice and fish farming.
There is a growing demand for mollusks, particularly mussels and clams, due to rising
consumer awareness regarding several health benefits associated with their
consumption. In addition, the presence of mollusks in tanks and water bodies help in
maintaining good water quality by filtering nutrients, sediments and contaminants
from the water. Thus, they are being increasingly used in poly-culture systems to
improve the quality of the surrounding environment. Mollusks are expected to witness
the fastest growth among the aquaculture species at a CAGR of 2.6% from 2013 to
2019.China alone contributed to 60% of the worldwide aquaculture production in
2012. Asia Pacific (excluding China) was the second largest contributor to the
aquaculture market due to presence of favorable environmental conditions in this
region. China is expected to witness the fastest growth within the forecast period on
account of ease of availability of resources, ideal climatic conditions for aqua
farming, and availability of cheap labor. Some of the leading aquaculture
manufacturers include Blue Ridge Aquaculture, Cermaq ASA, Cooke Aquaculture
Inc., Nireus Aquaculture S.A., Selonda Aquaculture S.A. and Tassal Group Ltd.
among others. The aquaculture market is fragmented in nature due to the presence of
several small and medium companies.

Weakness

Yield gap in fisheries resources particularly in reservoir fisheries. Average

yields reduced to 1000kg/ha where as potential is 3-4 thousand kgd/hectare

Fish stock in Indias territorial deep-sea water also remain untapped owing to

the dearth of suitable fishing vessels

Post harvest losses are estimated worth over rs 15000cr (both marine &
inland) which is about 25% of the total Indian marine and inland industry

which is worth of over Rs 61000Cr

Low value addition & fish processing .there are no organized & coherent

Over 250 million economically strong potential consumer of food and the
domestic demand for the fish and processed fish food is increasing very
rapidly. The Prices are more than doubled in the decade.

Threats

The marine fish catch is stagnating due to uncontrolled fishing & over

exploitation of coastal resources

The climate change and other factors are leading to decrease in marine fish

catches & the climate change is also having the impact on inland fishes.
The Indian retail departmental stores is already having ready to eat imported
processed fishery products such as canned Tuna ,Salmon etc. If India is not
geared to meet the International competition there is increased threat from

such products flooding the Indian market.

Unsustainable capture inland fishery activities in the past led to habitat
degradation, multiple use of inland water bodies with least priority to fishery

wealth
Quality of the fish seed is the most important problem and there is no

organized brood stock production activity

Lack of infrastructure and skilled man power in disease diagnostic labs in the

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
7.1 Research:
Research in common term refers to a search for knowledge. In a broader sense
it is a sense of scientific & systematic search for pertinent information on a specific
topic and thus is an art scientific investigation

Page | 16

7.2 Research Approaches

There are basic two types of approaches or methodology of research, viz.,
Quantitative approach and Qualitative approach. The former involves the generation
of data in quantitative form which can be subjected to rigorous quantitative analysis in
a formal and rigid fashion. This approach can be further sub-classified into inferential,
experimental and simulation approaches to research. The purpose of inferential
approach tore search is to form a data base from which to infer characteristics or
relationships of population
Qualitative approach to research is concerned with subjective assessment of attitudes,
opinions and

behavior. Research in such a situation is a function of researchers

insights and impressions. Such an approach to research generates results either in nonquantitative form or in the form which are not subjected to rigorous quantitative
analysis. Generally, the techniques of focus group interviews, projective techniques
and depth interviews are used
Research methodology adopted in this research project is Quantitative since data
generated from all the social media platform is in quantitative form.

7.3 Type of your project research

Quantitative research your research will take an objective position, and your
approach will be to treat phenomena as hard and real. You may favor methods such as
surveys and experiments, and will attempt to test hypotheses or statements with a
view to generalizing from the specific data that you collect. This approach typically
concentrates on measuring or counting and involves collecting and analyzing
numerical data and applying statistical tests.
Qualitative research
Your view of the phenomena to be investigated should be more personal. You will use
methods such as personal accounts. Unstructured interviews and participant
observation to gain an understanding of the underlying reasons and motivations for
peoples, attitudes, preferences or behaviors. With this approach, the emphasis is more
on generating hypotheses from the data collection rather than testing a hypothesis.
Qualitative and quantitative research methods are not clear-cut nor does mutually
Page | 17

exclusive most research draw on both methods. Both approaches can generate
quantitative and qualitative data.

7.4 Method of Data Collection:

7.4.1 Collection of Primary Data:
Primary research consists of a collection of original primary data collected by
the researcher. It is often undertaken after the researcher has gained some insight into
the issue by reviewing secondary research or by analyzing previously collected
primary data. It can be accomplished through various methods, including
Page | 18

questionnaires and telephone interviews in market research, or experiments and direct

observations in the physical sciences, amongst others.
Primary research was done to know the domestic market of the fishing
industry. Fieldwork was carried out where visits were made to the Khatiya bazaar
(Masjid Bandar), Mumbai.
Collecting primary data through face to face conversations where vendors
were enquired about the current market conditions, market demand for fishing goods.
Secondary research uses outside information assembled by government agencies,
industry and trade associations, labor unions, media sources, chambers of commerce,
and so on. Secondary research was carried out by information from other sources
from the Internet. Published data was collected about aquaculture.

7.4.2 Collection of Secondary Data:

Data for the previous year was obtained from the records of the company.

Books

Library data

Research papers

Newspapers

7.5 universe and sample size

The universe of the project is concerned with fisherman from the kathiya bazaar,
masjid Bandar, Mumbai. The Sample size of the project is 100. It includes whole
sellers, retailers, and fisherman (Individual).

7.6 Sampling techniques

Convenience sampling, as the name implies is a specific type of non-probability
sampling method that relies on data collection from population members who are
conveniently available to participate in study.
Convenience sampling is a type of sampling where the first available primary data
source will be used for the research without additional requirements. In other words,
Page | 19

this sampling method involves getting participants wherever you can find them
typically wherever is convenient. The convenient sampling no inclusion criteria
indentify prior to selection of subjects. All subjects are invited to participate.
In its basic form, convenience sampling method can be applied by stopping random
people on the streets and asking questionnaire question. Pepsi challenge is
occasionally head in large shopping centers and other crowded locations and all
members of populations are invited to participate in the contest without any
discrimination.
In business studies this method can be applied in order to being primary data
regarding specific issue such as perception of image of particular brand or collecting
opinions of a perspective customers in relation to a new design of a product.
This sampling technique may prove to be effective during exploration stage of
research area, and when conducting pilot data collection in order to satisfy and
address short coming associated with questionnaire design.

7.7 DATA COLLECTION TOOLS

Data was collected through a checklist format and observation

Checklist method is where several questions are asked over the same topic and
similar responses are noted down.

Information was also collected through records.

Record refers to all the numbers and statistics that institutions, organizations
and people keep as a record of their activates.

A survey approach was performed where non-experimental type in which the

researcher investigates a community or a group of people.

Another name is formulate or exploratory research. In this case the fishing

vendor community was surveyed to find out about the Aquaculture.

Questions asked during the survey.

CHAPTER 8
DATA ANALYSIS
The data analysis of different aspects is done as per the data collected. The
interpretation of data and related findings gives the actual information about the
present condition of industries. The data analysis is done for three major operation
areas of company with considering the different variables.

CHAPTER 11
CONCLUSION
According to the study, I would like to conclude that we have very less competitors in
the fishing net industry, and the market of the Asian countries is already doing
well.We need to be more focused on the European countries and American market to
achieve maximum market share. There is also a lot of scope in the African market too
which would turn out to be beneficial for the company after a good market research.
The company has scope of improvement if they provide infrastructural set up for
Aquaculture to other companies. This will help to grow Aquaculture business.

CHAPTER 12
CONTRIBUTION TO THE HOST ORGANISATION
Company should focus on growth and give them training to get maximum
yield through new techniques. Arrange some workshops, lectures and training
programs for the fisher workers
Company should not think only profit as ultimate aim but fishers growth with
company must be done. As they are fishers based industry so they must
understand the up and downs in the economy and give maximum possible
rates for the crops.
To have smooth functioning company must appoint required staff so that
workload can be distributed and good culture created in the organization.
Company can use the assembled automation techniques for the plant
processing which is cost effective and time saving too.
To have good market Coverage Company must increase their digital presence
which is a key for success in information age.
Company should promote its own brand in the market at large rather doing job
work for other companies.
