REACTION PAPER IN THE MOVIE JOSE

RIZAL The movie tells the life story of Jose Rizal,
the national hero of the Philippines. Athree-hour epic
on the life and struggles of his poet and patriotisms.
It covers his life fromh i s c h i l d h o o d t o h i s e x

r c e s o c c u p y i n g t h e Philippines in the late
19th century. We are also thrown into the world of
Rizal's novels(filmed in black and white), so we get
a glimpse of how he viewed Filipino society under
the Spanish heal. The film also through a series of
flashback showing Rizal as a genius, a writer,
adoctor, an artist, a lover, a friend, a brother and a
son, thus giving a rich texture of Rizalscharacter.
The movie introduces us to the life of subjugation of
the Filipino people under therule of the Spanish
friars. From the execution of three Filipino priests in
1872 for allegedsubversion to the harsh and unequal
treatment of Filipino students in the schools, thisfilm
is a stinging indictment of Spanish colonial rule in
the Philippines. I also commend the film for its
bravery in showing the evil tyranny of t h e Catholic
Church during that time. Considering that the

Philippines is a Catholic nationthat is like butchering

a sacred cow but alas, Abaya works her magic in
depicting thesuffering of the Filipinos because of the
friars. This is by far the best Filipino movie that I
have seen so far. I would urge anyonereading this
who likes movies, to either rent it or buy it. I
particularly love the last scene of the film when
Rizal fell in the ground facingthe sky, having his last
breath looking at a beautiful sunrise- a metaphor
depicting thatRizal did not die in vain. He did not
die for nothing. He did not die defeated. Rather
hedied victorious because his death is the torch that
lights Philippine independence, thatignites
Philippine Revolution.

The Plot
Imprisoned in Fort Santiago under the abusive
Spanish colonization, Jos Rizal (Cesar Montano)
was approached by a young uneducated indio asking
the importance of education during his life.
Meanwhile, in Balintawak, Andrs Bonifacio (Gardo
Versoza) and his fellow secret organization of
Katipunan, commenced the uprising against the
cruel tyranny created by the Spaniards by tearing
their cedula as a sign of Spanish slavery.
Soon, a first lieutenant of the Artillery, Luis Taviel
de Andrade (Jamie Fabregas), visited Rizal. Taviel
de Andrade did not waste time to study carefully
Rizals case. In just a short period of time, Rizal and
Taviel captured each others sympathy and
eventually became friends as they had usual
meetings in Rizals cell in Fort Santiago. Taviel was
even able to celebrate Christmas with Rizal in the
cell where they drank and sang together.

After Christmas, Rizal was sent to Royal Audiencia

(the colonial court of appeal) to hear the trial against
him. Soon after, the magistrates decided to condemn
him under firing squad on the 30th of the morning in
Luneta.
At the night before the execution, Rizal hallucinates,
seeing his alter ego-protagonist Simoun of his novel
El Filibusterismo tempting the author to change the
climax of the story.
On the morning of the execution, his kin received a
small alcohol stove (not a gas lamp as commonly
portrayed) from his cell containing the last poem
"Mi Ultimo Adios." Stopping at the place of
execution facing the rising sun, Rizal asked the
authorities for a last request as he faces the firing
squad but the request is denied. Calm and without
haste, he changed his request to save his head during
execution. At the moment the shooting squad points
at his back, he readily uttered his final
words: Consummatum est. (It is done.)
After the execution, members of the Katipunan
successfully seized the Spaniards' weapons and
horses and soon after, Katipuneros of many filipino
provinces in war continued to battle, leaving Rizal's
legacy in their minds and hearts.

-Jose Rizal

- This quotes means if we use our own

language to communicate with the same Filipino we
will understand what we talk and to share. But we
use other language to communicate to other
countries to share ideas and talk to them.
While a people preserves its language; it preserves
the marks of liberty.

also preserves our dignity being a Filipino in a pure
heart.
If Rizal is still lives in our generation, he will sure
that all Filipino has an inspiration like him by being

are brave fight in everything even for his life and

to blood to be shed, we can fight them with our
knowledge and showing that we are equal to them. I
think if he is now here in our generation maybe we

Filipino are not like this even in our problem what

we experience today..

REACTION PAPER IN JOSE RIZAL MOVIE

Jose P. Rizal, known as the national hero of the Philippines shown his life history
covered from his childhood to his execution at the hands of the Spanish military on 19
century on the movie who performed by Caesar Montano, a Filipino actor. I also viewed
how and why he written his novels and poetry during the Spaniard regime. Thus, he
revealed the sorrow of the society on that time.
In this movie all the attribute of Rizal in different fields like being a writer, painter,
linguistic, sculptor, doctor and so on was shown. I seen how much a gifted child Rizal is
and Im so amaze on him. He is really a genius man. He is not only an expert in those
mention profession but also he is a good brother, son and great lover.
Moreover, the film made known the line of attack did by our heroes and
countrymen to achieve the freedom of our country under the rule of the Spaniards friar
and military force. There were a lot of discrimination and ruthless treatment in Filipino
on that period and that is the reason of the rebellions between Filipino and Spaniards.
Even in school, it was felt by Rizal and other Filipino students. Many Filipinos were
suffered. They were the servant of the Spaniards. Andres Bonifacio, Aguinaldo Jacinto
and the other members of the Katipunan led the himagsikan for the independence of
our beloved nation. Unfortunately, for the several battles we were lost.
Tandang Sora takes part in giving first aid for those who injured throughout the
fight. Although she is very old and it is a crime to help defiant people, still she applies
her medicinal knowledge. She proved that she really loved the country and she does
not agree upon the Spaniards administration.
Rizal used pen as his weapon rather than sword in fighting against the Spaniards
administration, he written it in novels and poetry. The most famous in his writings are the
Noli Me Tanghere and El Fili Pusterismo. Some historian said that Bonifacio and
Aguinaldo should be the national hero because they fought in the revolution, while Rizal
cautioned about it. But they didnt think that much better to have a peaceful fight. Even
though they have a great contribution for our freedom, Rizal stills the one who have the
qualities of being a national hero.
The fact that Philippines is a Catholic nation but the evil despotism of the
Catholic Church under Spaniards friars are still felt by the Filipino. One of the
unforgettable events in the history of our country was the execution of the three Filipino
priests also known as the three Martyrs, Fathers Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos and
Jacinto Zamora on February 17, 1872, by order of Governor General Izquirdo. It is an

injustice, vicious and merciless punishment. They are innocent and they did not deserve
it.
The most painful and melancholic incident in that time is the death of our national
hero Dr. Jose Rizal in Dapitan now known as Bagumbayan. He did not worthy to die in
that way. Hes tender loved in our country brought him in his last breath. But it is
valuable; it became the pathway to achieve the independence of our country in the
hands of Spaniards. Rizal is the pride of our nation.
We, as a Filipino citizen we must value and love our country like what our heroes
did. Rizal did not die in vain. He did not die for nothing. He did not die defeated. Rather
he died victorious because his death is the torch that lights Philippine independence
that ignites Philippine Revolution. Let us salute our heroes especially Dr. Jose Rizal for
their contribution to our freedom.
This movie is one of the best films in the world that I viewed. It represents my
citizenship and my history being a Filipino. I am thankful to all are heroes who offered
their lives in order to achieved our freedom. It opened my mind and made me proud to a
Filipino and to be loved my country as well as my countrymen.

Reaction on the Movie, Jose Rizal

19FEB
The movie Jose Rizal which was excellently played by Cesar Montano as the lead role was a
heartwarming one that shows how Rizal runs his life.
While watching the movie, I felt mixed emotions given the fact that it was made to help us, Filipinos,
understand what our national hero had done for the country. It shows how Rizal really love his mother
country for him to sacrificed his own life.
The film also works through a series of flashback showing Rizal as a genius, a write, a doctor, an artist, a
lover, a friend, a brother, a son that gives texture to his character.
It shows the great explanation of the Philippine history, the nationalism and heroism in a non-violent
manner, though, there were times that the characters speak in Spanish language and I couldnt
understand it unless I will read the subtitles. I could also say that the other characters werent having any
difficulties in reciting their Spanish lines.
The actors dedication for the film is inevitable especially Cesar Montano who is very perfect for the role of
Rizal. His values and great performance as the lead actor is impeccable and has a great impact on me as
the audience of the said film.

Also, the supporting casts like Jhong Hilario who played as Rizals servant, Jaime Fabregas as Rizals
attorney did a great job on portraying their role fluently. They made it easy for me to understand the flow
of the story.
However, there are also negative comments that I must say about the movie. The plot was full of twists
and turns. It is confusing to watch because of too many flashbacks and you couldnt guess whether it is
still in flashback or not. Also, some scenes are brutal, and some are not suitable for young kids such as
the bed scene wherein the Spanish priest with the used of his power tried to rape a Filipino woman.
They shouldve cut that scene knowing that this film is not only for old-aged viewers but also to the
students who are studying the life of Rizal, particularly those who have the subject El Filibusterismo and
Noli me Tangere.
All in all, the movie is superbly great. It was epic, melodrama and historian. There are funny, tearful,
griefs; hatred scenes that would surely make you appreciate it. The characters are unforgettable.
I particularly love the last scene when Rizal fell in the ground facing the sky, having his last breath look at
a beautiful surprise it only shows that Rizal did not die in vain. His death was just the beginning of
everything we aim to face the Spaniards who made us suffer.
After watching the film, I couldnt help but feel the sense of pride being him as the Philippine National
Hero. There is no one like Rizal. He is a legacy of what a real Filipino is.

Hhhhhh
This movie is a 1998 Filipino biographical film of the Philippine national hero Jos
Rizal directed by Marilou Diaz-Abaya and starring Cesar Montano as Jos Rizal.
Dr.Jose Rizal, our National Hero was a noble person. The movie was saying what was
the real meaning of "Patriotism" that was being instilled in every Filipino's mind. The
movie focuses on the condition of the society and also to the government at the time
of the Spanish Colonization. With the use of the novels, "Noli Me Tangere and El
Filibusterismo" written by himself the Filipinos have been awaken to the reality such
as the abusive ways of the Spaniards towards the Filipino people. It really gave the
picture of abusing and oppression of the Spanish Government and also the Friars.
Because of that, Dr. Jose Rizal finally realized that writing was the best way on how
to awake the hearts of these poor Filipino and that the start of the climax, the start
of fighting.Rizal didn't really stay being blind, mute and deaf in fighting the condition
of the Filipino. He also criticized the Friars in using the religion for abusing the
people. The movie had successfully showed some of the characteristics of the Filipino
like being brave and Patriotism especially at the time of Rizal. But lastly, the most

important for him was to give his country the freedom and justice until the end of his
life.
The movie pertains the life of our National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. Describing his
youthful life, his studies, his life when he was endeavoring in the other country, his
journey, his life when he was in Dapitan and finally his life when death was
approaching to him.
The focus of the camera is very clear and it helps the scene to be seen truly. The
pictures on the movie is clear. Obviously, the actions and on how the actors and
actresses move is very truthful in the eyes of the viewers. the setting like mountains
or hills, the farms and the surrounding are also clear. They also carefully used the
technologies in order to give more of the quality of the movie.

The Jose Rizal movie is considered as an Obra Maestra directed by

a Veteran Director named Marilou Diaz- Abaya. She is really a daughter of an art and
this movie proved that. Her ways are very effective in giving the real happenings in
the life of Dr. Jose Rizal. the movie was being portrayed clear and the viewers would
really believed that it was really as it was before from the setting, actors and
actresses
and
also
the
time.

Flashback. We can really see from its whole movie because the story started at the
jail. This happened when his death was approaching. He talked to Atty. Jose Taviel de
Andrade. He narrated his life from being a child until being a grown-up man. He also
narrated his love for the country until to his death. The story primarily focuses on the
life of Rizal as a good son, respectful and intelligent student and a true gentleman. It
focuses also to his works in arts but not in every woman who got involved to
him.Obviously, the role of the women before was they dont have major role in
speaking but on the action that's very essential in delivering the message. Lastly, we
can see here also the works of Jose Rizal such as the two novels mentioned above.

Mr. Cesar Montano, the primary actor is a great actor. Even in speaking spanish and
how to forge the handwritten of Jose Rizal and these help the movie to be effective.
The supporting actors and actresses are also great in giving their roles, portraying it
right and the message is effective.
I can really recommend this to all viewers because there are a lot of values that can we get from
the movie even if it has violence.
