Academic Honors
I am currently ranked seventh out of the 37 undergraduate students in my department on the basis of my CPI (equivalent of GPA).
I was ranked 106th among approximately 100,000 examinees in JEE 1996, the Joint
Entrance Examination for admission to the IITs.
I have represented India at the 37th International Mathematical Olympiad, held
in Bombay (Mumbai) in July 1996, and won a silver medal.
I am a recipent of the National Talent Search Scholarship in 1994.

List of Publications
Kaustubh Deshmukh, Priti Shankar, Amitava Dasgupta and B.S. Rajan. On the
many faces of block codes. In Proceedings of the 17th International Symposium on
Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2000), 2000.

Research Experience
B.Tech. Project (Senior Thesis)
For my final year thesis, I am currently working on Multi-topic Text Classification under Dr. Soumen Chakrabarti. This project involves creating algorithms
and heuristics for classifying documents into more than one topic. We are currently in the process of implementing our algorithms and testing them out against
existing ones for better accuracy. We soon plan to submit the work for publication.
Summer Training
During summer99, I worked in the field of Coding Theory under Dr. Priti Shankar
in Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. There I worked on getting a
theoretical formulation about when trellises for block codes can be overlaid to yield
faster decoding algorithms. My work there will appear in the 17th International
Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2000).
Seminar (Junior Thesis)
In my junior year, I presented a home paper on Approximate String Matching
Algorithms based on the work done in one semester, under the guidance of Dr.
Abhiram Ranade. During this time, I did a comprehensive study of various algorithms for approximate matching of strings. I also pointed out a few errors in the
papers which I had studied. I was awarded the highest possible grade (AA) for the
same.

Mathematics Background
I have completed two years of advanced mathematics in the Nurture Program
conducted by the National Board for Higher Mathematics at the Mehta Research
Institute, Allahabad. Here I have covered Linear Algebra, Group and Ring Theory,
Galois Theory, Real and Complex Analysis and General Topology.

Projects Undertaken
Unix and C Project: Design and implementation of a File Manager for the
X-Window system in JAVA.
Logic Design Project: Designing a circuit for storing and replaying voice data.
Microprocessors Project: Designing an interface of 8085 microprocessor with
non-volatile RAM chips.
Compiler Project: Writing a compiler for a subset of Pascal using C, Lex and
Yacc.
Business Information Systems Project: Creating a system for automation of
the process of Training and Placement at IIT Bombay.
Operating Systems Project: A comprehensive study of Distributed File Systems.
Database Management Systems: Implementation of query result caching on
a Relational Database Management System built in IIT Bombay.
Some of the above were part of labs and courses and were done in groups.

Software Exposure
I am well conversant with the following programming languages: C, Pascal, and Java.
I am also quite comfortable with: C++, Prolog, Lisp and Haskell.
I have worked extensively on, and am well conversant with the following platforms: DOS,
UNIX, SunOS and Linux. I am also quite comfortable with Windows NT and Windows
95.

Extra Curricular Activities

I am currently the General Secretary of the Computer Science and Engineering Department. In this capacity I also serve on the Department Committee for Under
Graduate Affairs. I am also a nominee on the Student Affairs Committee, the
highest student decision making body at IIT Bombay.
I headed the team of organizers of the annual, city-wide Linux Workshop, conducted
by our department, in August, 1999.
I have been the Technical Co-ordinator of the Computer Science and Engineering Association (CSEA) in the year 98-99.
I am an avid wildlife enthusiast and find time for regular trips to some of the National
Parks and Wildlife Reserves in India.

Declaration
I hereby declare that the information given above is true to the best of my
knowledge.
