Welcome to this edition of Forest Information Update. Natural resources have often
been linked to sometimes prolonged and bloody conflicts A link to the article
“Classification of Natural Resources” in our Articles of Interest section highlights the
lack of research linking conflict and natural resources. Economist Päivi Lujala’s paper
develops a classification system to be used in resource exploitation and conflict risk
research. Although the article focuses on the minerals sector, forestry has been a
fundamental factor in many conflicts worldwide. Think “blood diamonds”, think
mahogany, or the impact on indigenous peoples of cattle ranching in the Amazon. I
trust this is and our other links to sources are of interest. Please, feel free to contact me
if you have any queries about content or sponsorship. Kind regards, Mike Smith, Editor
and Director info@southem.com

. HOW TREES ARE RESTORING HOPE - Armenia has learned the hard way what it
means for a country to lose its forests—and the huge backbreaking effort required to
4
replant them. But, as this National Geographic report notes, in its struggle and
determination to restore its trees, Armenia is an inspiration for the rest of the planet.

. MODELING FOREST FIRES CAUSED BY LIGHTENING - M. Waseem Ashiq writes
via the GAOF list: Hi all, Forest fires caused by lightening play an important role in
forest dynamic especially at landscape scale. I have interest to model the forest
landscape dynamics caused by forest fires (lightening origin) under future climate
change scenario. I will be working with BFOLDS (Boreal Forest Landscape Dynamic
Simulator) model for study area in Ontario. I am particularly interested in literature
and/or guidance that; (1) How lightening causing forest fire is distinguished/modeled
spatially? (2) How it (lightening causing forest fire) can be modeled for future climate
change scenarios? I will highly appreciate your input.
