capitaloftheMalaysianstateofNegeriSembilan,
locatedwithinthedistrictofSeremban,oneofthe
sevendistrictsofNegeriSembilan.Thetown's
administrationisrunbytheSerembanMunicipal
CouncilalsoknownasMajlisPerbandaran
Seremban.On9September2009,Serembanwas
tobedeclaredasacity,howeveritwaslater
deferredduetotechnicalreasons.However,the
ideaofgrantingcitystatushasbeenbroughtup
againandSerembanisexpectedtobecomeacity
inthenearfuture.

History
SungaiUjongcameintoexistencewiththediscoveryoftinoreinthe1870slikemostmajortownsin
PeninsularMalaysia.ThediscoveryoftininanearbyareacalledRasah,sawaninfluxofArab,Malay
andChineseimmigrantstoworkontheminesandtradethere.MostofthelocalMalayswerefarmers.
RenamedtoSeremban,thetownflourishednotonlyasaminingareabutalsoabusinesscentre.The
LinggiRiverservedasthesoleoutlettoferrytinandsuppliesinandoutofthetown.Revenuecamenot
onlyfromtintradebutalsofromthelargeamountoftaxescollected,muchtothedispleasureofthe
tradersandtheBritishcolonialistsattheneighbouringportofMalacca.
Thelocalchieftains,namelytheDatoKelanaandtheDatoShahbandarofSungaiUjongwereatodds
witheachotherontherightstocollecttaxesandownershipandcontrolofthemines.Therivalryto
assertinfluenceandauthorityopenedthedoorforBritishinterventioninNegeriSembilan.TheBritish
sidedwiththeDatoKelanauponinvitationanddefeatedtheforcesoftheDatoBandarwhowaslater

CaptainMurraywasappointedthefirstresidentandlatersetuphisresidenceatChannerRoad,now
renamedJalanDatoSiamangGagap.Soonafter,thepeoplelivingaroundRasahmovedtoChanner
Roadforthesakeofsecurityanditsorderlyadministration.[4]

Citystatus
Serembanisoneoffourstatecapitalsthathasnotachievedcitystatus(Bandarraya)theotherthree
beingKotaBharu(Kelantan),Kuantan(Pahang)andKangar(Perlis).However,theMinistryofHousing
andLocalGovernmenthasapprovedSerembantobedeclaredacityby9September2009.Toachieve
thecitystatus,thestategovernmenthasagreedthatMajlisPerbandaranNilaiandMajlisPerbandaran
Serembanwillbemerged.[5]

Thestategovernmentwantstoensureallthenecessaryinfrastructure,publictransport
andamenitiesandserviceswhichincludegarbagecollectionandsaferneighbourhoods,

Serembanissituatedabout60kilometressouthfromKuala
Lumpur(thecapitalcity)andabout30kilometresinlandfrom
thecoast.ItisintheLinggiRivervalley,atthefoothillsofthe
TitiwangsaRange.Theterrainisgenerallyhilly,andthesoilis
mostlyreddishlateritesoil,suitableforthecultivationofrubber
andpalmoil,thusmakingSerembantheagriculturalcentrefor
thestate.SincetheestablishmentofSeremban,theLinggiRiver
hasplayedanimportantroleinthedevelopmentofthetown.
Duringtheboomperiodoftinmining,theLinggiRiverwasthe
majortransportationroutefortintraders.Today,itisoneofthe
majorsourcesofwaterforSerembanandNegeriSembilan.

Weather
TheclimateofSeremban,likemostpartsofWestMalaysia,isgenerallyhotandhumid(tropical)witha
meantemperatureofabout2730degreesCelsius.Mostrainfallisexperiencedduringtheintermonsoon
periodsofAprilandOctober.Theweatherremainsgenerallydryfortherestoftheyearwithoccasional
showers.

onionsandsesameseeds.
LocaldessertsincludeABCorairbatucampurmeaningshavedicewithbrownsugarsyrupandrose

Fishpond,thenamegiventoanareaofopenlandintheSerembantownareawhichhaslongbeenthe
synonymandsubjectofcomplaintsofthecitycommunityhasrecentlybeengivenanewlook.Nomore
isthereabarren,neglectedviewwhichwasclaimedtobethebreedinggroundformosquitoesinthe
heartofSerembanTownCentre.
Recently,theSerembanSquarewhichdecoratesthemainentrancetotheSerembantownbegantoattract
attentionandhassinceturnedintoapopulartouristhotspot.Thecomfortableopenground,thecalming
waterfountain,thebeautifuldecorativelights,makesitsuitableasatransittorestinbetweenvisiting

Serembanhasanumberofhospitalsandmedicalcentres,whichincludeagovernmenthospitaland
privateownedhospitals.
TuankuJa'afarHospital,formerlyknownasSerembanGeneralHospitalisthestateandreferralhospital
forthestateofNegeriSembilan.Establishedin1930withtotalcapacity800bedsand20clinical
specialitiesandvarioussupportiveservices.SituatedatBukitRasah,Seremban,thehospitaloccupying
anareaof212acres(0.86km2)ofland.
TheotherhospitalsincludeColumbiaAsiaMedicalCenter,whichopenedin1999andnowhas80beds
andoffersoutpatientandinpatientspecialistservices,a24hourclinicandemergencyservices.
In2004anewhospitalwasestablished,SerembanSpecialistHospitalwhichhastotalcapacityof109
