InstallingaHardDisk
Ifyouveneverexperiencedthedifficulttaskofinstallinganewharddiskthenthisprocessof
explanationshouldmakethisprocessmucheasierforeventhenotsonovicecomputerpeopleoftoday.The
firstimportantinformationtobetakenintoconsiderationisthepurchaseofbuyingtherightharddiskfor
thecomputersystem.Thereisavarietyofdifferentharddiskonthemarketavailableforpurchasetoday.If
youarereplacingaharddiskthatcamewiththecomputerthatyoupurchasedthenIsuggestbuyingthe
sametypeofharddiskthatcamewiththecomputerthatyoupurchased.Afteryouvemadethedecisionof
whattypeofharddisktopurchase,thenyouarereadytobegintheprocessofinstallinganewharddisk.
Thefirststepinthisprocessistopoweroffthesystemandunplugthepowersupplyfromtheback
ofthecomputer.Next,Removethesidepanelofthecomputer,whichgivesyouaccesstotheinternal
componentsofthecomputer.Afteryouveaccomplishedthistask,youarereadytounplugtheMolex
cablesfromthebackoftheharddisk.TheMolexcableisanothernameforthepowersupplycablethatis
plugintothebackofharddisk.Second,youshouldthenunplugthe40,or80pincableconductorfromthe
backoftheharddisk.Thiscableisalsoknownastheintegrateddriveelectronics(IDE)interfacecable,the
threeendsofthecablearelabeledasthemaster,slaveandsystem.Theonelabeledmasteristheendthat
plugsintothebackoftheharddisk,theonelabeledslaveisforanothersmallcomputersysteminterface
(SCSI)devicesuchasanotherharddiskandtheonelabeledsystemistheendthatplugsintothemother
board.Onceallofthecablesareunplugfromtheharddiskthenyouarereadytoremovetheharddiskfrom
thecomputercase.Youmustfirstremovethescrewsthatarekeepingtheharddisklockedinposition
withinthecomputercase.Somecomputercasesmaydifferformothersandmayonlyrequiretheslideofa
levertofreeupaharddiskfromthecomputercase.Nowyoucanremovetheharddiskfromthecomputer
case.

Thethirdstepinthisprocessistoactuallyremovetheharddiskandinsertthenewharddiskinto
thecomputercase.Next,allyouhavetodoisreversetheorderasifyouwereremovingtheharddiskfrom
thecomputer.Insertthescrewsorslidethelevertothelockedposition.Pluginthe40or80pinconductor
cableintothebackoftheharddiskandplugtheMolexcablebackintothebackoftheharddisk.Alsoyou
mayneedtocheckthejumpersettingsontheharddisk.Thejumpersettingsareusedtosettheharddisks
settingstomasterslaveorcableselects(CSEL).Thiswillvarydependinguponwhetheryouareinstalling
oneormoreharddiskwithinthecomputer.Thiscangiveyoutheabilityofinstallingtwooperating
systems(OS)ononecomputeratatime.Someexperiencedcomputerpeoplelikehavingtheabilityof
beingabletoworkwithtwooperatingsystemsatonetime.Soanotherwordsyoucouldhavetwodifferent
versionsofWindowsinstalledatonetime.Thisisalsoknownasamultibootsystem.Nowthatyouve
accomplishedconnectingallthecables,youmustinstallthesidepanelofthecomputersystempluginthe
powercableandturnthepoweronagain.
Finally,thesystembeginstobootupandthecomputergoesthroughabootupprocess.The
computerwillrecognizethatthereisnooperatingsysteminstalled,youmustthenpreparetheharddiskfor
theinstallationofthenewoperatingsystem.Theharddiskmustfirstbeformattedandpartitionedbefore
installingtheoperatingsystem.Aftertheharddiskhasbeenformattedandportionedyoucanthenbeginto
installtheoperatingsystem.NewoperatingsystemscanbeinstalleddirectlyfromaCDROM,butsome
olderoperatingsystemsmustbeinstalledstartingwithabootupdisk.Inthiscaseletsinstalltheoperating
systemfromaCDROM.InserttheCDROMintotheCDROMdriveandrestartthecomputer.Whenthe
computerrebootsthecomputerwillrecognizethatthereisaCDROMinsertedintheCDROMdriveand
willbegintheinstallationprocess.Next,justfollowtheonlyscreenstepstobegintheinstallationprocess
oftheoperatingsystem.Afterthisprocessisfinishedyouwillneedtorebootthecomputerifthecomputer
didntrebootitself.Ofcourseifallthestepswerepreformedproperlyandthedevicedriversinstalled
automatically,thenyoujusthavecompletedasuccessfulharddiskinstallandacleanoperatingsystem
installation.
