Lets Enjoy Green Holidays
Have you ever considered the cost of your holidays? Have you ever thought that they
could be harmful to the environment?
Nowadays, tourism has become the worlds largest industry. According to the latest
statistics, one billion people will travel worldwide by 2010. However, tourism poses
one of the greatest threats to the environment. Air travel, for example, causes the
greatest air pollution as it increases greenhouse gases.
Once you arrive at your holiday destination, you will affect the environment and
society there. Many kinds of resources such as water, power, and other necessities
have to be relocated in order to supply new tourist sites. Meanwhile, there is an
increasing trend by hotels of producing high levels of waste and pollution. This poses
another threat to the local environment.
If you are really concerned about the Earth, you may want to choose among the green
choices. Some options such as having a holiday in a nearer country, using railways
rather than air transport, and joining an eco-tourism group which cares about the
environment, can be beneficial both to you and the world around you.

Weather Troughs

A trough of low pressure is an extension of an area of low air pressure. It is called a

trough because the atmospheric pressure over the region is lower than the pressure at
the troughs two sides, in contrast to a ridge of high pressure. Troughs affecting Hong
Kong occur in summer, between June and September. Troughs, like typhoons, have
great influence on the weather of Hong Kong.
We all know that rains are heaviest here in summer. Troughs are one major source of
rain in Hong Kong. When Hong Kong is under the influence of a trough, there are
occasional rainstorms and heavy showers, which are short periods of rain. The
weather thus becomes unstable.

The rainstorms brought about by troughs are short and sudden. The Black Rainstorm
Signal was hoisted on 9 June 2006 as a result of a trough over Hong Kong. About
200 mm of rainfall was recorded that day and 48 floods were reported. Most floods
were reported in the New Territories. We should therefore pay close attention to the
weather reports when troughs occur over Hong Kong.

Dining in Hong Kong

Dear Peggy,
How are you? I heard that youre going to visit Hong Kong next month, so Id like to
tell you about some of the good restaurants Ive been to there.
Hong Kong is a place for food lovers. You can try food of different types and
nationalities there, but I prefer the local food, especially dishes from dai pai dongs.
Some people may not like dai pai dongs because they are usually located in the old
districts. I like the food because I can watch the cook prepare it in an open-air kitchen.
Then I know that the food is hot and fresh. You can also try a range of dishes at
inexpensive prices snacks, Chinese dishes and seafood. Thats why dai pai dongs
are so popular with both tourists and locals.

There are many delicious local dishes in Hong Kong. My favourite drink is yuan
yang. Its a special mixture of coffee and milk tea. I first tried it at a teahouse. I also
bought a box of yuan yang mix for Grandpa at the supermarket. Im sure hell enjoy
it.
Theres one specialty you cant miss in Hong Kong thats wonton noodles! I tried it
in a noodle shop in Central. It was great, but Mum preferred congee. She says noodle
soup is too oily for her.
I hope you get the chance to try all these for yourself in Hong Kong. Have a great trip.
Take care!
So long,
Jenny
