Thesis Social media is sabotaging real human communication.
Why you should care about this topic?
Everybody uses social media. It seems that social media is disconnecting us from real
world interaction. Therefore, I believe that we should reconsider our usage of social
media, as it isolates us from friends and family. Imagine, sitting in a corner of a dark
room alone.
Preview Today, We will explore issues like how social media disconnects us by
reducing real human contact and its bad consequences on studies and health.
I: Social media plays a major role in reducing real human contact.
A: People may argue that social media is meant to connect to humans. However,
studies and examples showed that, in reality, it separates us from each other.
B: As studies suggest, real connection occurs through authentic communication.
Studies show that only 7% of communication is based on the written or verbal word. A
whopping 93% is based on nonverbal body language. I believe that it is clearly evident
only when we can hear a tone of voice or look into someones eyes that were able to
know when he or she meant what he or she said.
C: Last Year, Sharon Seline exchanged text messages with her daughter. Both of
them shared positive messages on chats. However, later that night, her daughter
attempted suicide. [Another personal example]
D: Under the name of technology, anyone can hide behind that profile, projecting
any image they want by creating an illusion. Moreover, without the ability to receive
nonverbal cues, it is easy for them to lure their audience. This presents a paradox.
Therefore, with all the powerful social technologies, we are more connected and
potentially more disconnected than ever before.
II: Social media reduces command over language and increase depression rate among
people too.
A: The popularity of social media, and the speed at which information is
published, has created a lax attitude towards proper spelling and grammar. This reduces a
students ability to effectively write without relying on a computers spell check feature.
B: Example to support my point
C: According to a research, social media affects mental health. It increases
depression, anxiety, and narcissism among its users. Other effects like inability to think
independently and low self-esteem have also noticed in frequent social media users.
D: Example to support my point
