DISCUSSIONS
This field work entitled, Determination of the Height of A
Remote Point aims to develop the skills in getting the vertical
distance of a certain inaccessible point using a single vertical
plane and using two planes, horizontal and vertical. To acquire the
knowledge learned in the analysis of right triangles in determining
the height of a remote point. To learn how to read a vertical angle
of a transit. Also, to have the confidence of working with ones
party or group and to be fully responsible in the performance of
the assigned task.
Heights of surface features above sea level are determined
in four main ways: by spirit leveling, by measuring vertical angles
and distances, by measuring differences in atmospheric pressure,
and, since the late 20th century, by using three-dimensional
satellite or inertial systems. Of these the first is the most
accurate; the second is next in accuracy but faster; the third is
least accurate but can be fastest if heights are to be measured at
well-separated points. The last two techniques require
sophisticated equipment that is still very expensive.

HEIGHT DETERMINATION/REM MOTHOD

The REM method is used to find the height above ground

where a prism cannot be placed directly on the target (Wei and
Cheng, 2006). Surveyors can determine the ground of
inaccessible points (like tall buildings, bridges, etc.) with this
method (Kavanagh, 2003 b). The principle of the REM method is
simple and the observation process is convenient. With this
method, a prism is positioned under the unknown points, the
height above ground of the prism is measured with a tape
measure; heights above ground of the remote targets are easily
measured with a total station (Duggal, 2004). The principle of the
REM method is shown in Figure 1, where a prism B is positioned
vertically below an unknown point A, the height h above ground
of the prism is measured and the slope distances to the prism
from a remote position like F is determined by a total station D
together with the two zenith distances z1 and z2.

CONCLUSION

In the field of surveying, it is necessary to know how to findthe

height of a certain remote point with the use of a special
instrument. A theodolite is used extensively in surveying, civil
engineering and construction because they can measure both
distances and angles.
A primary survey fieldwork consists of measuring horizontal and
vertical angles or directions and extending straight lines. The
instruments that can perform these functions have additional
refinements (built-in) that can be used for other survey
operations, such as leveling. Two types of instruments that fall
into this category are the engineers transit and the theodolite. In

recent years, manufacturing improvements have permitted construction of direct-reading theodolites that are soon to replace the
vernier-reading transits. However, in most SEABEE construction,
the engineers transit is still the major surveying instrument.
We, as engineers must know this kind of technique because this
will be helpful for us in the near future. This will set boundaries to
what we are as engineers. The use of instruments, theodolites
and such wil help us effectively finish the field work. It is
necessary for us to practice using theodolite as early as now
because in the real world, as we practice or career we will be
exposed in projects involving such.
