What is the meaning of a Swastika?
How the Word is Derived
In Sanskrit, the proper spelling of the word swastika is svastika. Sanskrit has
no 'w'. Literally, the word svastika is a statement of affirmation, "It is!" "Li
fe is good!" "There is value" "There is meaning!" Svastika is a term that affirm
s the positive values of life. The word is made of su + as. "As" is the root of
the copular verb "to be" of which the third person singular is, "asti," "it is."
Su is a prefix used in Sanskrit to intensify meaning in a positive way, thus su
+asti means literally, "it really is!" When combined, the 'u' changes into a 'v'
thus giving the form svasti. The ending 'ka' makes this verbal form into a noun
. This is the linguistic morphology of the word, svastika.
A Negative Symbol

Right Handed Swastika

Today, the Swastika is primarily known as a symbol of racism, persecution and an
ti semitism, which, primarily, arises from the ideology of the German Nazi party
and World War II. I remember performing a wedding between a Hindu girl and a Je
wish boy. Right at the beginning of the ceremony, when it is traditional to hold
a decorative cloth between the boy and girl, the Hindu mother proudly presented
a special cloth with a huge red Swastika in the middle that she wanted me to ho
ld between the couple. Half the audience was Jewish! Another time, I performed a
ground-breaking ceremony for a Hindu family, who was going to build a new home
in an exclusive gated community. The man had me draw a large red Swastika on the
ground where the house would be built. Later, as we were walking around the per
imeter of the property, someone came walking a dog and saw the red Swastika. In
terror, this person called the police thinking that a neo-Nazi cult was moving i
nto his neighborhood. On many occasions, I have had to explain to confused fire
and building inspectors why there are Swastikas in our Hindu temples. As a pries
t, I regularly bless people using the expression, svasti svasti svasti! and even
inscribe swastikas on the heads of newly shaved babies for their health and pro
sperity!
Its History

A Nazi Swastika
In fact, the Swastika is an ancient solar symbol that has been used by many cult
ures going back at least 3000 years. It has been found used by the celts in nort
hern Europe and by the Greeks as early has 1000 BCE. In India the symbol has bee
n used since Vedic times. It is most commonly seen as an ancient Aryan symbol. N
azi Germany did not invent the symbol, but only borrowed it in order to show the
"aryan" roots of their new German state. Today, unfortunately, the Swastika is
most commonly known for the destruction of life rather then its affirmation.
Its Use in India

Left Handed Swastika

In India, the Swastika is used in two forms, one with the arms moving to the rig
ht, the right-handed Swastika, and the other with the arms moving to the left, t
he so-called "left-handed" occult Swastika. It is commonly thought that the Nazi
s used the left-handed Swastika and that this is the difference between the Hind
u's use of the Swastika and the Nazi's use of it. But this is not the case. In f
act, the Nazis used the same right-handed Swastika that is used in modern Hindui
sm, but gave it a 45 degree turn. This gives it the appearance of being left-han
ded, even though it is not. Regardless, in India many groups have used the left-
handed Swastika. One common example amongst Hindu groups is the Theosophical Soc
iety, which used it on their logo. The left-handed Swastika is also associated w
ith esoteric tantric practices. Jains and Buddhists often use the left handed Sw
astika as well. Today the right-handed Swastika is mainly used in Hindu temples,
homes and sacred ceremonies as a symbol or affirmation of good luck, health and
prosperity. A "yes" to life!

c or Hindu Dharma and all its sects all over the world to save the divinity, pur
ity, auspiciousness, serenity, prestige and position Swastika holds in human rac
e, after the German members of European Parliament called for the total ban on t
he use of Swastika all over Europe in protest of Prince Harry’s provocation of i
nternational outrage by wearing Nazi outfits with a swastika arm band in a priva
te fancy dress party. It is shocking and astonishing news for the lovers of Swas
tika, irrespective of their faiths, all over the world that the European parliam
ent is in opinion of considering such a ban on this innocent symbol. What has Sw
astika done wrong? What is the crime of Swastika? Once the most popular, respect
ed, beloved, revered and worshipped symbol of human being all over the world by
all races and all faiths is facing socially, religiously and ethical discriminat
ion in Christian dominated European Parliament. This senseless, idiotic and illo
gical motion of Swastika phobia must be opposed strongly and stopped immediately
with the demand of lifting the ban and reinstating the use and status of Swasti
ka in Germany. The people of the world must be educated and re-educated in the s
ubject of Swastika to justify such worldwide agitation not only to save the Swas
tika but also to reinstate this holy and humble symbol with all its status, glor
y and respects.

The four wings of the Swastik cross point towards the four directions, namely No
rth, East, South and West, which connotes stability, firmness and strength. It i
s used as the symbol of Sun, thereby representing Lord Surya. Swastika is regard
ed very sacred and therefore this motif is used to adorn almost all the things a
ssociated with the Hindu religion. Due to its holiness, it is used in all the Hi
ndu yantras in the form of a religious symbol.
Most of the religious scriptures contain the design of Swastik. Even, the Hindu
God Ganesha is depicted as sitting on a lotus flower kept on the bed of Swastika
s. Swastika is one amongst the 108 symbols of Lord Vishnu. It signifies the rays
of sun, which are precious for the existence of life. The right side of Swastik
a represents the rotation of sun, which begins from the Northern hemisphere and
then proceeds to east, then south and finally west. Left side of Swastika is kno
wn as Sauvastika. It symbolizes Goddess Kali, who is portrayed in a very terrify
ing manner. She is considered to be the Goddess of darkness.

is adopted by people of all religions, but it is especially popular amongst the
Hindus. The term Swastika has been derived from the Sanskrit word "Svastika", w
hich means well being. Swastika is considered to be a mark of auspiciousness and
good fortune. Red Swastika is the sign of Hindus, which depicts a cross with fo
ur arms of equal lengths. The end of each of the arms is bent at a right angle.

a, more popularly known as the Tirthankara Suparsva. It is one of the most promi
nent auspicious symbols of the present era. In the cultural traditions of Svetam
bar Jains, Swastika is one of the main symbols of the ashta-mangalas.

The swastika is a very old symbol with use widespread throughout the world
. Sometimes referred to as a “Gammadion" "Hakenkreuz” or a "Flyfot,” it traditio
nally had been a sign of good fortune and well being The word “swastika” is deri
ved from the Sanskrit “su” meaning “well” and “asti” meaning “being.” It also is
considered to be a representation of the sun and is associated with the worship
of Aryan sun gods. It is a symbol in both Jainism and Buddhism, as well as a No
rdic runic emblem and a Navajo sign.
 By definition, the swastika is a primitive symbol or ornament in the form
of a cross. As the illustration below shows, the arms of the cross are of equal
length with a section of each arm projecting at right angles from the end of eac
h arm, all in the same direction and usually clockwise.

When Adolph Hitler, the frustrated artist, was placed in charge of propagand
a for the fledgling National Socialist Party in 1920, he realized that the party
needed a vivid symbol to distinguish it from rival groups. He sought a design,
therefore, that would attract the masses. Hitler selected the swastika as the em
blem of racial purity displayed on a red background “to win over the worker,”
Hitler had a convenient but spurious reason for choosing the Hakenkreuz or
hooked cross. It had been used by the Aryan nomads of India in the Second Mille
nnium B.C. In Nazi theory, the Aryans were the Germans ancestors, and Hitler con
cluded that the swastika had been “eternally anti-Semitic.”

A sabha, i.e. society or party, of the kirtis (workers) and kisans (peasants), f
ostered and, to some extent, funded by the Ghadr Party, was established on 12 Ap
ril 1928 with a view to organizing small agriculturists and industrial workers a
nd other low-paid urban labour, for revolutionary activity. The Sabha owed its o
rigin to the Kirti movement started by Bhai Santokh Singh (d. 1927), a Ghadr lea
der who had spent two years in Moscow "studying Soviet methods of village propag
anda." Initially, he laid out secret plans to prepare the masses for action. He
then started propaganda through the press. To this end, he launched a monthly ma
gazine in Punjabi, the Kirti, the first issue of which was published from Amrits
ar in February 1926. The journal became the mouthpiece of the Kirti Kisan Sabha.
Bhai Santokh Singh was helped in his work, which was first carried on secretly,
by Bhag Singh Canadian, who was co-founder with Santokh Singh of the Kirti, Kar
am Singh Chima, Baba Vasakha Singh and Kartar Singh of Latala.
They were joined by Santa Singh of Gandivind, also trained in Soviet methods of
rural agitation, and Dasaundha Singh and Gajjan Singh who had taken an active pa
rt in Soviet propaganda in China and had been deported to India in March 1928. A
little later came Harjap Singh, according to governmet papers a "notorious" Gha
dr emissary, under whose direction the Sabha suddenly changed its tactics and em
erged into the open with a definite constitution and programme. It was in furthe
rance of this new policy that an openly inflammatory Gurmukhi weekly Mazdur Kisa
n was also started.
The first Kirti Kisan conference, presided over by Professor Chhabil Das of the
National School of Politics, was held on 28-30 September 1928 at Lyallpur. Among
the 12 resolutions adopted was one declaring complete independence for the coun
try as the goal and rejecting the recommendations of the Nehru Committee which h
ad limited it to dominion status. The Sabha held another conference (13 October
1928) in Meerut which provided the authorities a pretext to launch the Meerut Co
mmunist conspiracy case and arrest many of the workers. The 1929 annual session
of the Sabha was held at Lahore during the Christmas week. Throughout this perio
d the Kirti continued to disseminate Communist thought and preach the creed of r
evolt against British imperialism. Every issue of the paper was proscribed and p
rosecution launched against its dummy editors and the press at which it was prin
ted.
The Kirti Kisan conference held on 4 March 1931 at Anandpur Sahib on the occasio
n of the Hold Mohalla festival called upon workers and peasants to set up units
of the Sabha in the villages. The Irwin-Gandhi Pact (1931), which failed to secu
re release of the youth involved in cases of violence, and the hanging (23 March
) of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were subjected to severe censure at the a
nnual session of the Sabha convened at Karachi on 29 March, sharing the pandal w
ith the Naujavan Bharat Sabha.
The Kirti Kisan Sabha was declared unlawful under the Criminal Law Amendment Act
, 1908, vide notification No. 12467SB, dated 10 September 1934. The Sabha ceased
to exist thereafter but the movement assumed other names and continued with the
task it haThe Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) met on October 14th
2009 to discuss the Report of the Bt Brinjal Expert Committee and take a final
decision on the environmental release/commercial cultivation of Bt Brinjal in In
dia. Reports suggest that the GEAC has decided to approve the environmental rel
ease of Bt Brinjal from Monsanto/Mahyco in India which would for all purposes pe
rmit the use of transgenic and Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and product
s for edible purposes. In the event of such a decision Bt Brinjal will be the fi
rst transgenic vegetable to be cultivated and sold in Indian markets. This is ha
ppening even as there are many unresolved issues surrounding the environmental r
elease of the transgenic vegetable as well as genuine concerns expressed over it
s safety for human consumption. There is also the added threat of all future see
ds and therefore Indian agriculture to come under the control of global MNC s an
d the charging of extortionate prices from Indian farmers.The Brinjal in questio
n also is part of an USAID programme called Agri-Biotechnology Support Programme
[ABSP] where under a Public Private Partnership, 3 Indian institutions, Indian
Institute of Vegetable Research, Varanasi, University of Agricultural Sciences,
 Dharwad and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore are working with Mon
santo and Mahyco. There are also serious misgivings about the GEAC itself which
has been transgressing its role as a regulatory body and showing an inherent bia
s towards big monopoly companies like the Monsanto. It has been pointed out that
some of the “experts” in the GEAC have conflict of interests. Certain experts o
n the Committee are also reported to have expressed strong objections which were
however not taken into account. If the GEAC carries forward the environmental r
elease of Bt Brinjal floodgates will be opened for nearly 60 genetically modifie
d food crops in India, some of which are already in the pipeline like rice, corn
, okra etc. In this regard it may be noted that the European Union has followed
strict norms and countries in the EU have banned the genetically modified food c
rops.The monopoly of the MNCs like Monsanto over the seeds is another major conc
ern. Seeds are no longer in the public domain as they are now the “intellectual
property” of these MNCs. The withdrawal of State regulation has aided the creati
on of seed monopolies and the Governmental policies are abetting the gradual eli
mination of the Public Sector Seed Corporations. In India today, MNCs directly o
r indirectly control a major share of the seed market. The government has made n
o efforts to generate self-reliance in seeds by combining the ingenuity of farme
rs and the technical know-how of scientists. Instead it has only sold out Indian
agriculture to big agri-businesses, making IARI and other agricultural research
bodies colloborate with global MNC s as virtual junior partners.After the GEAC
had given approval to Monsanto to launch its Bt Cotton technology between 2002 t
o 2005 Monsanto charged an exorbitant trait value (Royalty) of Rs.1200/- per pac
ket of 450g. Bt Cotton seeds were being sold at an exorbitant price of Rs.1800/-
to Rs.2000/- per packet. Based on the complaints of the Andhra Pradesh Ryotu Sa
ngham, the Government of Andhra Pradesh referred the matter to the Monopolies an
d Restrictive Trade Practices Commission (MRTPC). The MRTPC indicted Monsanto an
d passed an interim order stating that Mpractices and this had resulted in some
relief for the farmers. The MNCs however retain the monopoly over seeds and ther
e is no regulation on themThere has been no transparency in the discussions in t
he run up to this meeting and MNCs have violated rules for open field trials. In
the case of Bt Cotton earlier Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka had protested agains
t Bt Cotton trials by Mahyco-Monsanto. Kerala and Orissa have announced that the
y will not allow field trials of GM crops. Officials from the states of Uttar Pr
adesh, Chattisgarh, and West Bengal have written to the Centre pointing out irre
gularities and violations in the conduct of field trials on GM brinjal, okra and
rice. While hearing an appeal on safety of GM products, the Supreme Court, thro
ugh its order on 8 May 2007, clearly upheld the importance of bio-safety. The ne
ed for rigorous bio-safety tests has also not been met in a manner so as to disp
el doubts raised about the implications of these crops for humans, animals and t
he environment.Concerns regarding the health and environmental risks associated
with GM crops are too serious to be disregarded. The seed monopolies that threat
en Indian agriculture and farmers’ livelihoods should also be reined in. The All
India Kisan Sabha demands that there be no hasty introduction of Bt Brinjal wit
hout addressing these concerns. It also demands complete transparency from the G
EAC and making public the nature of the trials carried out and the bio-safety of
the products. Without a public examination and a debate on the safety of Bt Bri

roducts of his daily needs too.

The combination of the pump and the retail outlet is what drives this model. IOC
has gone ahead and tied-up with many FMCG and farm implements companies for an
exclusive access to these rural outlets. One of the first FMCG companies to tie-
up with KSK was Dabur, now they have recently tied-up with AIRTEL for mobile. Th
e other tie-ups include National Seed Corporation and Indo Gulf Fertilizers. The
re many similar tie-ups in the pipeline and the company is working on the modali
ties of the dealAt the ground level there are many operational difficulties with
managing the retail outlet. The fuel sells on its own and the villagers are hap
py that they are able to buy diesel and petrol at their doorsteps. Earlier they
had to travel atleast 10 kms to the nearest petrol pump to buy fuel.... But the
dealers feel that they don t have the expertise of dealing with the wide range o
f products that they are expected to sell, ( from Fertilizer to note books) and
because they don t have the whole range which a typical grocery shop would have
they find it difficult to attract customers, and with the limited sales they are
unwilling to put in a separate person for the retail shop , which is essential.
Then there are issues related to credit and the market visits one has to make t
o keep maintain the stocks...
