Pastors Corner
One of the spiritual disciplines of the Christian life easily forgotten or neglected is the
discipline of fasting. In my own life and ministry, I have gone through phases where
fasting has been both embraced and ignored, yet when it has been an intentional
discipline for me, it has been of great benefit to my spiritual life. Whether or not we've
ignored it until now, there is never a bad time to start fasting to deepen our devotion to
God!
The first thing that John Wesley, founder of Methodism, did to prepare to receive the
Lords Supper on Sunday was to fast for the purpose of focusing his attention on God. Wesley also refused
to ordain people to the Methodist ministry who did not regularly fast every Wednesday and Friday. Yet he
did not believe fasting was a spiritual discipline reserved for only ministers or the most devout Methodists.
When Wesley drafted The General Rules of the Methodist Church, he noted that It is expected of all who
desire to continue in these societies that they should continue to evidence their desire of salvation, by
attending upon all the ordinances of God, such are: the public worship of God; the ministry of the Word,
either read or expounded; the Supper of the Lord; family and private prayer; searching the Scriptures; and
fasting or abstinence.
Of course, in the 18th Century, there were not many other things to fast from but food. In our day, we have
a whole variety of entertainment and social media that often consume all of our free time (and perhaps,
some work time, too?). If the purpose of fasting is to focus our attention on God, then maybe it's a great
idea to look at those things which distract our attention from God, and make a conscious decision to fast
from those.
(Continued on page 2)

(Continued from page 1)

If I can be so bold as to call for a fast for all of us on Good Friday, then let
me put it out there: since we have nothing happening in our church on
Good Friday this year, perhaps we could all take a personal fast that day
to think and pray and meditate on the sacrifice of Christ on the cross.
There is something "near and dear" to us that we can fast from on that
special day of remembrance. It may be food, it may be Facebook or
Twitter, it may be the television or newspaper. It might be all of the
above! Whatever we can put aside that day to focus on Jesus and his
sacrifice for us will help to deepen our faith in him. It would be wonderful
if all of us could fast together on Good Friday, and then go on to make
fasting a regular part of our spiritual disciplines. Please let me know how
it goes for you if you decide to do this. Even now, declares the Lord,
return to Me with all your heart, with fasting..." Joel 2:12

Read the Bible in a Year

I believe we face many crossroads in life; points in time where we dont
always know how to move forward or choose a different path. Reliance upon the
Old and New Testaments of the Bible steers the direction of our journeys
through the rich illustrations found throughout the pages of our guidebook on
faith.
This week we consider the readings from Numbers and the Gospels of Luke
and Mark. We begin with Moses sending out 12 spies to scope out the Promised
Land. They return to warn him not to move forward because the land is full of
giants. I believe one of the greatest tragedies in our church today is we see
giants as well that prevent us from moving forward to fulfill our potential
as Christians to make a difference in a broken world.
But our reading moves us into the New Testament where we learn that
Jesus is the complete revelation of God. What Jesus does uniquely for us is to
reveal who God is and how much God loves us. Our fears, the giants that
threaten, are countered and conquered by the promise of Easter in the
reality of the risen Christ.
One of my favorite praise songs is titled Who Am I. Reflect upon
these words and be blessed by the unfathomable love and constant presence of
God:
Who am I that the Lord of all the earth,
Would care to know my name, would care to feel my hurt?
Who am I that the bright and morning star,
Would choose to light the way for my ever wandering heart?
Not because of who I am, but because of what you've done.
Not because of what I've done, but because of who you are.
Who am I, that the eyes that see my sin,
Would look on me with love and watch me rise again?
Who am I, that the voice that calmed the sea,
Would call out through the rain and calm the storm in me?
Not because of who I am, but because of what you've done.
Not because of what I've done, but because of who you are.
I am a flower quickly fading, here today and gone tomorrow,
a wave tossed in the ocean, a vapor in the wind.
Still you hear me when I'm calling,
Lord, you catch me when I'm falling
and you told me who I am:
I am Yours - I am Yours
