MEXTESOL REPPORT
In this paper I will mention the topics that where presented on Mextesol
Guanajuato 2016. The first topic will consist on the reflection process. The
second topic is about methodology. Also I will mention what was my experience
in this conference and in what aspects it has been useful for me.
The academic talk about reflection: another great idea in ELT, was presented by
the teacher Jessica Ana Luz Perez Meza. This plenary was most about the utility
of reflection in our teaching process. In this presentation teacher Jessica
explained what makes a good teacher. She presented her statements as the
following:

The first thing is to think about our students

Create visually attractive material
Take into account learning styles
Adapts content with context
Master the language
Be able to engage

She explained that in order to have a reflection we need to have critical

thinking. This consist in looking objectively to something in order to perceive
what is good and bad. Some teachers have the wrong idea of critical thinking
and attach to what happens in their classes but in an emotional way. Critical
thinking helps us see beyond our emotions in order to improve, solve, and
change what we find wrong.
Critical thinking helps us get more awareness in our teaching practice focusing
in issues.
She stated some tools that can helps us get to the reflection process. This tools
are:

Teachers observations
Peer observations
Diaries
Self-observations

This tools are very important to achieve a good reflection. Everyone could use
the tool that most prefers but a self-observation tool is more useful because it
helps us see our abilities and debilities. Self-observation consist on recording
ourselves giving a class. Afterward we go back and check the record in order to
be critical thinking and make a reflection of our jobs.
The plenary about kumaravadivelus post-method pedagogy: expanding our
classroom practice was presented by Leonardo Rivas.

The speaker mentioned that when observing classroom practice, it is common

to see language teachers engage students with diverse methods and
techniques. The talk was centered on taking the methods perspective into the
era of post- method pedagogy set forth by kumaravadivelu(2008).
This author mentions some method myths and frameworks. It was mentioned
that a method is a planned way of doing something and a methodology is
implementing a/some methods in classroom. An approach is the philosophy
that guides the method and the techniques are the activities that are used in
order to reach our purposes. At the end of the talk it was mentioned that all
teacher should have a free way of working and not always follow a method to
present content. This is because most of the time teachers are more worried
about the planning process that providing a good learning to their students.
Assisting to this conference helped me understand better some things that I
had been having trouble comprehending. Hearing different opinions, ways of
teaching, and perspectives has helped me stablish better my own way of doing
things in my teaching process.
