UNICEF History
UNICEF = United Nations International Childrens Emergency Fund
Established on 11 December 1946, by United Nations General
Assembly

1946: Focus on Food to Europe
o After World War II, in the winter of 19461947, millions of
people in Europe were still without proper shelter, fuel, clothing
or food. Children especially were suffering: In some affected
areas, half of all babies were dying before their first birthday.
UNICEF is created in December 1946 by the United Nations to
provide food, clothing and health care to them.
1953: UNICEF becomes permanent part
o In 1950, its mandate was broadened to address the long-term
needs of children and women in developing countries
everywhere. UNICEF became a permanent part of the United
Nations system in 1953, when its name was shortened to the
United Nations Children's Fund. However, UNICEF retained its
original acronym.
1959: Declaration of the Rights of the Child
o The UN General Assembly adopts the Declaration of the Rights
of the Child with 10 principles, which defines childrens rights to
protection, education, health care, shelter and good nutrition.
1961: Education
o Following more than a decade of focus on child health issues,
UNICEF expands its interests to address the needs of the whole
child. Thus begins an abiding concern with education, starting
with support to teacher training and classroom equipment in
newly independent countries
1965: Nobel Peace Prize
o Nineteen years after its founding, UNICEF was awarded the
Nobel Peace Prize on 26 October 1965 for "fulfilling the
condition of Nobel's will, the promotion of brotherhood among
the nations and emerging on the world stage as a a peacefactor of great importance. This event was made possible by in
the growth of a global partnership involving governments,

private and non-governmental organizations and the world's


peoples, to take advantage of increasing opportunities for
improving the lives of children everywhere.
1989: Convention on the Rights of the Child
o The Convention is adopted by the UN General Assembly. It
enters into force in September 1990. It becomes the most
widely- and rapidly-accepted human rights treaty in history.
o UNICEFs mission is to advocate for the protection of childrens
rights, to help meet their basic needs and to expand their
opportunities to reach their full potential. UNICEF is guided in
doing this by the provisions and principles of the Convention on
the Rights of the Child.
2002: Special Session on Children
o A landmark Special Session of the UN General Assembly was
convened to review progress since the World Summit for
Children in 1990 and re-energize global commitment to
children's rights. It was the first such Session devoted
exclusively to children and the first to include them as official

UNICEFs Mission
Threefold Mission of the UNICEF
o To ensure that basic nutrition, health, and education needs
of children are met

o To create an international ethical standard of behavior
toward children
Provides a relief network for children and their parents or
other caregivers in the aftermath of disasters, such as
floods, earthquakes, and droughts, prevent child abuse,
child labor, sexual exploitation of children, and the use of
children as soldiers
Provide immunizations to millions of children against
potentially fatal diseases
Children rights:

Sponsorship
o UNICEF has an agreement with the Spainish association
football club (Bacelona); the club would donate 1.5 mil Euro per
year to the organization for 5 years since 2006.
Trick-or-Treat UNICEF box
o In 1950, a group children get their 17$ which they received from
Halloween to donate to UNICEF Trick-or-Treat box to help the
victims of World War 2. => Tradition in North America.
o Ex. In Canada -> ~$91 mil. , US->$132 mil.

o UNICEF works with all sizes and all types of business, UNICEF
invest with other companies around the world

Conclusion
UNICEF was established for humanitarian and developmental
assistance to children and mothers
Recommendation:
o Enhance partnership with research and policy in the regional
level
o Strengthen the staff implementation
o Look around all criticism
o Create more fundraising activities
