RTF EXAM NOTES

In 2007 a number of airlines requested an RTF Exam which they

could incorporate into their training to test their pilots knowledge of
phraseology. Attached is the final version, which adheres to the
guidelines set out at the time the request for the RTF Exam was
made. The following notes set out how the exam is designed to be
used following those guidelines:
1.

The exam is NOT designed for all the questions to be used in

one sitting.

2.

The exam has been split up into four sections; the first three
are based on ICAO: General, Airport and Radar; the last
section is based on UK phraseology.

3.

A random selection of questions should be taken from each

section and merged to form an exam comprising
approximately 20 to 30 questions. How many are taken from
each individual section, depends on the bias you require the
exam to have toward any particular section. Each airline
should feed the questions into their own computer program to
generate an exam in this manner.

4.

The questions have been based strictly on current

phraseology and answers are all available in CAP413.

5.

Where the question is testing how you would actually say

something (eg a frequency), the words or numbers concerned
have been spelt out. For example 119.050 appears as one,
one nine decimal zero five zero. Where this is not the
purpose of the question, the numbers or letters have not been
spelt out. This follows the format of the CAP413.

6.

The exam requires knowledge of standard phraseology. It is

designed to highlight areas of strength and weakness. It is
not designed to be the sole method of training in RTF.

7.

Each airline will be responsible for keeping the questions upto-date and adding to the exam as per their own
requirements.

8.

The correct answers are highlighted in green for easy of

reference. Please change them to black before using the
questions!
