RADIO PROTOCOLS
All operational fire communications will utilize assigned radio frequencies for the
fire area.

radio traffic priority:

• Emergencies involving injury or possible loss of life or property
• Initial fire reports, fire reports, fire suppression activities, aerial resource
dispatching, and aerial patrol
• Routine fire work (lineups, weather, fire logistics, ordering, etc)
• Administration traffic

correct use of radios

The Fire Department Radio System is provided for fast and effective
communications during routine and emergency operations. The reliability of the
system depends on correct use and operation of the radio equipment. The
following rules pertain to radio transmissions (messages) and radio monitoring
(listening).

• Think about the message before transmitting.

• When transmitting on portable radios, hold the radio so the antenna is
vertical to the ground.
• Remember the range of portable or hand-held radios is limited when
accessing the repeater even under the best of circumstances. In-
vehicle mobile radios are best at reaching the repeater when talking to
dispatch or other responders.
• Hold the microphone or the face of the portable radio two to three
inches from the mouth and speak directly into the microphone.
• When transmitting, depress the Push-To-Talk (PTT) switch and swallow
once before talking
• Speak in a clear voice at a normal tone and rate. Do not yell, whisper,
speak too fast, or too slow.
• When called on the radio, respond with the correct call-sign and be
ready to receive the information.
• Stand with back to wind when talking
