Now Wait for Last Year reflete o fascínio pela ficção científica e o problema inerente de
visualizar o futuro.
Now Wait for Last Year reflects a fascination with science fiction and the inherent
problem of visualizing the future.
Shot in Beijing in 2006, the city was in the throws of a construction boom. Thousands
of developers’ hoardings intruded on the city streets, each displaying an architect’s
visualization of what was to come, in a digital-soft style—a visual overlay of proposed
onto existent that seemed to compress time and give the impression that tomorrow
might actually be running concurrently with today.
The video presents six buildings in single-shot fixed frames, a hybrid of architect’s
projection and corporate video. Photographic in nature, but with visible
postproduction, the images, both monumental and unreal, resist being located in a
specific time or reality, so prompting the question whether these buildings actually
exist in present-day Beijing, are plans for future developments, or sheer fantasy. The
title is borrowed from Philip K. Dick.
