Experiment description:
Objectives:-
Vernier caliper : an instrument that can be used to take both inside and
outside measurements for a work piece.
Measuring rolls : cylinders usually 50mm in length and 12,5mm in
diameter , they should be free from taper and out of roundness and
they should be equal in size.
Measuring balls : two balls of different size , the size depends on the
work pieces dimensions.
Procedures:
1-External taper :-
1- Let the work piece rest on a surface plate, make two equal height
(h1) of gauge block stacks and place them on the sides of the piece.
2- Rest the measuring rolls on top of the stacks.
3- Measure the distance m1 by the Vernier caliper.
4- Change the gauge stacks heights to h2 .
5- Rest the rolls again on top of the new stacks.
6- Measure distance m2 by the Vernier caliper.
7- Determine the heights h1 , h2
8- Determine the angle from the corresponding equation given in the
data and result section .
9- Replace the gauge blocks with the measuring rolls .
10- Measure the distance m and h using the Vernier caliper.
11- Determine S and E using the corresponding equation in the data
and result section .
12- Draw the external taper of the work piece according to the
results u obtained by your measurements
2- internal taper:-
Data obtained :
External:h1=0mm
h2=11mm
c1=c2=12mm
m1=47.08mm
m2=48.60mm
Internal:d=15.08mm
D=19.06mm
M=18.30mm
m=70.10mm
Results calculated :
External :-
m2 m1
tan = -----------------------------------------2( h2 - h1 )
S=m-2j-2r
=90-
tan b/2 = r/j
j=r/tan(b/2)
e=s+2h tan
=90 degrees
Internal :2(m-M)
Cosec = --------------------------

during the experiment of external taper we run into the following errors 1guage blocks not stacking up correctly we can reduce the error by polishing
the surface with a specified mate , 2- the Vernier caliper moves the gauge
blocks and measuring rolls we solve this problem by holding the varnier
caliper with an angle while takeing the measurement and not firmly closeing
it on the workpiece and gauge blocks and rolls instead we keep it a bit loose
yet the jaws of the instrument get to be in the right position , 3- the balls
touch when put inside the work piece , we replace them with other balls of
the correct dimensions. We conclude that this experiment need precise
measurements or els the calculations will be wrong and such precision needs
a good skilled user .
