Adhemax Accelerator 1

Doc.-No.: 2197

1. Process Information
The purpose of the Adhemax Accelerator 1 is to accelerate the Pd-colloids adsorbed on the
ABS or ABS/PC blend materials plastic surface for electroless metallization and to prevent rack metallization
by stripping off the catalyst specifically from the rack isolation.

Add 85 l DI Water to the tank.

Carefully add the Sulphuric Acid while continuously stirring.
Dissolve the Accelerator Salt and afterwards fill the tank up with water to the final volume.

4. Maintenance
A new make-up is recommended after a throughput of about 8 12 m/l. It is also recommended to use
10 20 % of an used Accelerator bath if available. If no used bath is available it might be necessary to use a
higher bath temperature after the new make-up.

7. Recommendations for Wastewater Treatment

Rinse water and concentrates can be treated by a neutralization precipitation.
Concentrates should be diluted with the rinse water in the ratio of 1 : 3 and then neutralized
with caustic soda/calcium hydroxide to pH 9 10.
For better flocculation add flocculation agent (recommended is polyacryl amide/anionic with a
molecular weight of 4 6 million) and stir. Allow the precipitate to settle for better filtration.

Be sure to observe all local regulations concerning the limit values of pollutants
including the general regulations on dangerous materials!!

8. Analytical Instructions
Version: 03

Determination of Sulfuric Acid (96 %) by Titration

Doc.-No.: A0000202-03

Principle:
Acid-base titration.
Reagents required*:

0.1 M sodium hydroxide-standard solution

0.1% methyl orange-indicator solution (0.1 g of methyl orange-indicator dissolved in 100 ml of DI water)

IMPORTANT NOTE: Be sure to observe all local regulations concerning the limiting
values of pollutants including the general regulations on hazardous materials!

Equipment required:

250-ml Erlenmeyer flask

1.0-ml pipette
Usual laboratory equipment

Procedure:

Place 1.0 ml sample** of sample solution into a 250-ml Erlenmeyer flask.

Add 100 ml of DI water.
Add a few drops of methyl orange-indicator solution.
Titrate with 0.1 M NaOH standard solution. Endpoint is obtained when color changes from red to yellow.

Alternative: The Titration can be conducted as a turning point titration

using a titroprocessor equipped with a pH electrode type to determine
the endpoint.

The amount of ml 0.1 M Sodium hydroxide-standard solution*** consumed multiplied by 2.78 gives the
content of Sulfuric acid in ml/l.
The amount of ml 0.1 M Sodium hydroxide-standard solution*** consumed multiplied by 4.9 gives the
content of Sulfuric acid in g/l.
Example:
During titration of 1.0 ml of the sample to be tested, 5.5 ml of 0.1 M Sodium hydroxide-standard solution
were used.
Calculation:
5.5 2.78 = 15.13 ml/l Sulfuric acid (96%)
5.5x 4.9 = 26.95 g/l Sulfuric acid

Quality assurance: For maintenance, calibration of measuring devices

and the use of standards and reference materials please refer to the
corresponding guidelines.

Unless otherwise stated, these are always analytical grade substances.

Volumes given exact to a decimal point must be measured with a volumetric pipette.
For the purpose of calculation, the factor of the standard solutions is assumed to be
1.000 and is therefore not taken into account in the examples.

Determination of Adhemax Accelerator 1 by Titration

Doc.-No.: EXT-1005-TIT-05

Principle: Redox titration

Reagents required*:

DI-water
0.02 M Potassium permanganate-solution (0.1N)
0.1M sodium thiosulfate solution
2.5 M Sulfuric acid-solution (5 N)
30% Potassium iodide
Starch solution 1 %

Please follow the general regulations for hazardous materials in the Material safety
data sheets!
The analytical procedure is to be followed exactly.
Be sure to observe all local regulations concerning the permitted limits for
pollutants.
Procedure:

5.0 ml** sample is mixed in a 300 ml iodine flask with

20.0 ml** of 0.02 M Potassium permanganate-solution. Afterwards place it closed in the dark for 30 min.
Then add
10 ml 2.5 M sulfuric acid an 5 ml 30% KI and titrate with
0.1 M sodium thiosulfate solution *** until the color changes from brown to bright-yellow. After an
addition of
1 ml of the starch solution, the solution is titrated until the dark blue color in the solution completely
disappeared.
Also prepare a blank solution with 20.0 ml** of 0.02 M Potassium permanganate-solution and 50 ml Di
water in an iodine flask. Afterwards place it closed in the dark for 30 min. Then add
10 ml 2.5 M sulfuric acid and 5 ml 30% KI
Titrate with 0.1 M sodium thiosulfate solution *** until the color changes from brown to bright-yellow.
After an addition of 1 ml of the starch solution, the solution is titrated until the dark blue color in the
solution completely disappeared.

Alternative: The Titration can be conducted as a turning point titration

using a titroprocessor equipped with a platinium electrode to
determine the endpoint.
