Teaching Speaking by using Problem-Based Learning


In this paper, the writer will provide the procedure of teaching English especially
speaking skill by using Problem-Based Learning. The method is adopted by one of the titles
in the program book of Aecon. The title is The Effectiveness of Problem-Based Learning to
teach Writing and it was served by Mr. Benny Krisbiantoro as the presenter. According to
that, the writer believes that the method is also effective for teaching speaking.
A. Description of Problem-Based Learning
1. Definition
Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is a teaching method that is characterized by the
existence of the real problems as a context for students to learn critical thinking
and problem-solving skills, and acquiring knowledge (Duch, 1995).
2. Based on Nilson (2010, p. 190), PBL can give the learning outcomes providing
students with the opportunity to develop skills related to:
a. Working in teams.
b. Managing projects and holding leadership roles.
c. Oral and written communication.
d. Self-awareness and evaluation of group processes.
e. Working independently.
f. Critical thinking and analysis.
g. Explaining concepts.
h. Self-directed learning.
i. Applying course content to real world examples.
j. Researching and information literacy.
k. Problem solving across disciplines.
B. Procedure of teaching speaking with Problem-Based Learning
The steps of teaching speaking with Problem-Based Learning are explained
below agree with Scientific Approach.

1. Opening
a. Orientation
The teacher greets the students.
The teacher asks the leader of the class to conduct praying together.
The teacher checks the attendance list.
The teacher asks the students about the previous material.
b. Apperception
The teacher shows a video related with the topic of asking and giving
opinion.
The teacher asks the students about the video.
c. Motivation and Learning objectives

The teacher tells the students about the purpose of the expression of asking
and giving opinion.
2. Main Activity
a.
Observing

The teacher shows a picture that consists of the dialogue of two people in
using the expression of asking and giving opinion.

The teacher asks the students to observe the sentences on the dialogue by
stating the social function, identifying the structure of text, and suggesting the
expressions that are used in asking and giving opinion.
b. Questioning

The teacher asks the students about the result of observation.

The teacher lets the students to ask about the material.

The teacher guides the students to explain the social function, the structure of
text and the expression of asking and giving opinion.
c. Associating

The teacher gives another text that consists of dialogue in asking and giving
opinion.

The teacher asks the students to fill the blanks on the dialogues.

The teacher checks the answers by asking some of the students to mention
their answers.
d. Experimenting

The teacher splits the class into groups of 3-4 students.

The teacher shows some pictures about the social problems in Indonesia.

The teacher asks for each group to find the best solution to solve the problems.
e. Networking

The teacher asks each group to give their opinion about the solution of the
social problems in Indonesia orally in front of the class.

The teacher lets the students to give comments to their friends performance.

The teacher gives feedback for the students.


3. Conclusion
The teacher reviews and concludes the material about the expression of asking
and giving opinion.
The teacher gives homework for the students related to the material.
The teacher tells the students about the upcoming material for the next meeting.
