Philosophy of Christian Education

We at St. Matthew College believe that...

Man does not exist just to have but man exists in order to
be.
Contemporary philosophy recognizes man as a task, a continuous
process towards self- realization. It further emphasizes the fact that
man is a being in the world and as such, his existence here and now
must be given equal importance as his spiritual faculty.
In consonance with this idea, the Christian philosophy stresses that
Being and Having are complementary prerequisites for authentic living.
Man needs to have in order to be truly human. At the same time, it is
careful not to confuse that existence is not meant just to have.
Predicated on his healthy concept of man, the Christian philosophy of
education is geared towards the total and full development of the
person - the physical, intellectual, social, moral, and spiritual.

History and Milestones

Brief History
Historically, SMC started small with only 62 students and only a twofloor building to begin with. Most of the other facilities were makeshift
facilities such as a collapsible stage, which saw many years of use.
Through the years, the population rose. Correspondingly, the small
school expanded into what is now a school campus with two big
buildings, one named after its founder Mr. Arsenio E. Ramos; the other
after the late co-founder Mrs. Elisea S. Ramos.

The St. Matthew College Hymn and Prayer

The SMC Hymn

Our dear Alma Mater, St. Matthew College

We pledge that we will strive
So we may reap success
And scale the heights of wisdom.
REFRAIN
For love of God, our parents and teachers care
Well carry on with you as our very guide
Well surely lead on.
Oh dear St. Matthew College
We promise you to follow great deeds
You taught us to believe in ourselves
And make our every dream and goal come true.
Tis our precious goal, as we face tomorrow
With honor, fame and glory
To your everlasting name!
Composed and arranged by:
C. Noche and C. Tumpalan

The SMC Prayer

Oh God Almighty
Behold us Your loving children
Offering you today Our work and studies
Help us, dear Lord!
To be obedient to our teachers,
Kind to our companions
And diligent in our studies;
That we may merit Your blessing,
For ourselves, for our school,
For our beloved country, the Philippines.
Amen

MATTHEAN EDUCATION is a blend of the cognitive-intellectual and

the socio-emotional and spiritual development of the Matthean in all
levels of learning: preschool, grade school, high school, and college.
The book, the beaker and the torch all together symbolize the process
by which learning takes place. The torch branches out into 8 rays to
represent the core values woven into Matthean culture, namely: fear of
God, perseverance, benevolence, industry, concern for others,
honesty, integrity, and compassion. The circle depicts the constant
renewal of the schools Vision-Mission and shows that the pursuit of
quality education is never-ending. The two stems of laurel leaves
spread out from both sides of the founding year: one to mean
potential; the other, success.
