before srinivas answer your question, let me add my commentspractice is very important in electrical engg. 'coz, accuracy is of
utmost important in problems.
the reason for my comparatively low score this year is the poor
accuracy.. (unfortunately, i didn't check the answers, so can't
quantify my inaccuracy - but when compared to others my attempt
was fairly good, but my ultimate score is not so good.. i attribute
this for mistakes in answers)
now, we'll take srinivas's opinion also..

Yes Babu Sir..I also understand practice matter a lot...this year I
appeared in mains from electrical optional...Though i was not well
prepared in second paper...but preparation of paper-1 was decent. I
was having only problem there that every question was taking too
much time and paper was too lengthy. so I understand from this
that practice is very important...But I want to ask from where
should we do practice....

from text books, solving worked examples will help.. after you finish
that, u can think of solving papers of upsc i.e., IES, CSE papers..
then you will get true idea of length of question and time factor in
solving them.

We have praticed solved examples from standard text books like..
Bimbra for Machines
Wadhwa/Asfaq Hussain/Nagrath for Power systems
Naggor khani/nagrath for Control systems
Bimbra for Power electronics... etc.

But when you are practcing.. keep some time limit.. so that you can
improve on your accuracy and fastness..
while practicing you can leave the problems, which have some
tables/graphs.

how did u solve the questions 1(a), 1(b), 5(a) of 2010 paper II?
1(a) related to LVDT
1(b) related to microprocessors
5(a) related to mathematical model of physical system, CS.

regarding marking of electrical ias
i m avadhesh singh.
1)sir i want to know the marking of numerical and theoretical
problem.
i.e. out of 10 marks ;how much will credit on correct answer for
numerical and theoretical problem..
2)in numerical problem there is any provision of step marking. or
final answer marking
3) any idea about scaling.
please reply sir

experience says as follows maximum marks awarded for any question whether numerical or
theory are 70%
criteria for evaluation for numerical questions is- correct answer is
a MUST, if ur procedure also correct then u will get 70% marks. if
answer is wrong, most likely score is zero for that question. means
literally no marks for steps. steps will count only when ur answer is
correct.
for theory questions, it is a race with time.
u can get up to 60 to 65% of marks depending on how many
relevant points u write.
Scaling is unpredictable. but one can say that 360 to 380 for
topper is almost guaranteed. the marks for rest of the aspirants
will depend on so many factors.

Sir kindly provide the solution for the problem no 2a(ii) of paper 1
of 2010. Question is as follows

Obtain the convolution sum

y(n) = x(n) * h(n) for n = 2, using the
property x(n) * d(n - no) = x(n - no).
Assume
x(n] = (1/2)^n.u(n), h(n) = (1/3)^n.u(n)

here d(n) is delta function and u(n) unit step

Sir,
I am Harikrishna, I would like to know regarding presentation of
answers in electrical optional. 1st paper contains largely problems,
so I do not have any problem in that.
Sir, but second paper being largely descriptive I am facing some
difficulty. Like my hand writing is poor, presentation is not so
good, also writing speed is of average kind. Sir please provide your
valuable suggestions to me with regard to the above mentioned.
Sir, also please help us in like how much theory one has to write
for 5, 10, 20 markers.

@hari
for essay type theory questions, write your answers point wise
specifically answering what has been asked. if you don't know much
about any answer, don't waste your time on writing something
irrelevant to what was asked.
for short answer question, they expect bird's eye view, means no
elaborate explanation is needed. for eg. naming the principles are
sufficient not necessarily explaining the principle. it's just a trade
off between available time and the questions u know and want to
answer.
as such, in science and engg optionals, legibility is important not
necessarily good hand writing... in fact hand writing becomes really
bad due to race with time.. so don't worry about it
