General information

Introduction
This publication provides basic information for the planning and
installation of OWAtecta ceilingsystems.
The information contained within this guide is based on our recommendations and those contained within the current European
Standards (EN 13964). Inline with improving standards and techniques please make sure you are using the current* issues of both
documents.
As a manufacturer and supplier, we offer complete, tried and tested
ceiling systems. OWA ceiling systems can be used to achieve
practical and visual results.
In all cases the correct installation of the ceiling is essential to ensure
that the ceiling can fulfil any such requirements.
In order for the OWA ceiling to provide a high level of
performance, it must be installed in accordance with the

An OWA ceiling is installed using dry construction methods and is

generally for interior use only. The basic principles of dry construction
should be applied when installing the ceilings. Where additional
materials such as timber or gypsum are used, the guidelines on
working with those products should also be observed.

Before installing an OWA ceiling, the room/site conditions should be

assessed. The area should be weather tight (windows and doors in
place) and have a stable, dry environment. The ceiling should only be
installed after the wet trades, such as plaster- and screed-work have
been completed and the environment is dry and stable.

Standards for suspended ceilings

Since 1st January 2005, a so-called co-existence period has applied
for the standard EN 13964 (Requirements and test procedures
for suspended ceilings) and the appropriate national standard for
suspended ceilings in all EU States. During this phase, both of the EN
and the individual National Standards remained valid.

Quality
Dimensions, material characteristics and colour are covered by
EN 13964

Colour

Reference values for site environments

Generally the relative humidity should be < 70 % RH (reference
temperature 25 C; conditions suitable for tradesmens work, room
temperature > 7 C), but it is recommended that installation should
take place at temperature and humidity levels similar to those that will
prevail during subsequent occupation.

Following the expiry of the co-existence period on 30th June 2007,

only EN 13964 will continue to be valid.

The difference in E value within one production batch may not exceed a value of 1.0. Where the materials used are from more than one
production batch the tolerance may be greater than E = 1.0. Greater variation may be expected when installing materials purchased as
individual orders over extended periods of time.

The additional designations are:

s1, s2, s3 [m2/sec2] describes the smoke behaviour
s1 = little or no smoke generation
s3 = heavy smoke generation
d0, d1, d2 = burning droplets behaviour
d0 = no droplets within 600 seconds

These convergence tables have been published in Annexes 0.1.2/

0.2.2 of the Building Regulation List A Part 1.
As a rule, OWAtecta tiles and construction parts comply with re
behaviour A1 according to DIN EN 13501-1. The respective
re resistance classes of non-woven backings must be taken into
consideration.
OWAtecta structural components
A structural component in the sense of EN 13501-2 is not just the
suspended ceiling itself, but the entire construction consisting of
supporting oor or soft and suspended ceiling or of roof and suspended ceiling. This entire construction should prevent the penetration of re for as long as possible. In this context not only the material
of the ceiling, but also the re behaviour of the suspending construction is of great signicance.

Optimising building acoustics

OWAtecta ceiling systems can be used to reduce and control airborne sound generated from the cavity and adjacent rooms especially
when combined with additional inll elements, such as OWAcoustic
mineral wool panels. This combination is even more important when
using perforated metal panels.
In the modied form, the ceiling can be used to:
enhance the airborne sound insulation Rw [dB] of solid and
wooden beam softs
improve sound insulation Dn,c,w [dB] between two adjacent rooms
with a common plenum
reduce noises from the plenum
As installation conditions vary from site to site, each project should
be assessed on its own merits. Where the acoustic performance of a
room is important, it is recommended that a qualied acoustician be
consulted.
More guidance can be found in the relevant national standards:

Fire resistance with OWAtecta

When used in conjunction with OWAcoustic panels, re resistance
can be achieved using a number of OWAtecta ceiling systems.
Independent re resistant OWAtecta ceiling systems are also available. The performances shown in our test reports are only valid when
OWAtecta systems, panels and components are used and installed
in accordance with the relevant test report.

Basics technical guidelines

Planning before installation

Our metal ceilings are suitable for the application areas given in DIN
EN 13964. An inspection of the building site to check local conditions, site measurement of the rooms and production of an installation plan are important preliminary work steps. The ceiling layout,
arrangement of lighting and similar matters must be determined with
the architect.
Structural physics basics
All planning relevant aspects, such as determining ventilation crosssections, air exchange rates, arrangement of vapour barriers, humidity, feasibility of a soft in the case of a ventilated ceiling with regard
to the formation of any condensation in the building etc, must be
determined by an expert planner (building physicist) and tested, if
necessary.

Requirements regarding building physics, re protection, acoustics or

other matters, which could arise among other things from the relevant
standards, have not been considered in this installation brochure.

Perimeter panels
The size of perimeter tiles will be dependant on the ceiling layout and
may be dictated by the position of services, walls, partitions etc. as
well as other aesthetic considerations.

Generally, perimeter tiles should be as close to a full module size as

possible, and preferably larger than half a tile. In the example shown
below, we take a room that is 3.0 meters wide and install 625 x 625
mm tiles. The recommended layout uses three full tiles and two cut
perimeter tiles of 562,5 mm.

4
5

This is preferable to the other example, which uses four full tiles and
two cut perimeter tiles of 250 mm. The number of tiles is the same,
but the ceiling would require an additional run of suspension proles
and be less aesthetically balanced.

Effect of light or lighting on the suspended ceilings

For architectural and optical reasons, light striking the suspended
ceiling at a shallow angle should be avoided. This refers both to light
ttings and to glazed facades that extend up to the lower edge of the
ceiling.
Unfavourable incident light can emphasise and exaggerate any minor
difference in levels or pattern even when this lies within the tolerance
range. The installer can contribute signicantly to the appearance of
the ceiling by observing all of the manufacturers recommendations.
Tolerances
Mass produced ceilings are produced within tolerances that are
deemed to be acceptable. These tolerances are shown in EN 13964
The European standard for suspended ceilings. (See below for
excerpt).

121400

Flatness
The manufacturing tolerances for thin gauge materials are shown in
table 4 of EN 13964.
Squareness
The suspension system (main and cross sections) must be installed
absolutely square. The permissible deviation depends on the dimensions of the ceiling membranes used and their attachment. A practical
method to check the squareness of the modules is regular checking
of the diagonals during installation and/or the correct tting of the
ceiling panels. The permissible deviation depends on the panel type,
but even the slightest deviations from squareness may in practice
lead to visible deformation of the panels.
Alignment of panels
Suspension systems, panels and any service elements included in the
ceiling plane must be installed accurately and in accordance with the
module specied. Care should be taken to ensure that the alignments
of proles are maintained, especially at joints and intersections.
Cutting perimeter panels to size
Normally, the ceiling layout will be based on the centre line of the
room bisecting, or running along the junction of a panel. Unless
otherwise agreed, whichever provides the largest perimeter panel is
normally used. Ideally, the perimeter panel should be at least half the
size of the panel. When cut, installed and pushed over against the tee
parallel with wall, at least 10 mm of the panel should be resting on the
perimeter trim.

Basics technical guidelines

Building, expansion and movement joints

Masking work

Normally, building expansion and movement joints should be duplicated in the ceiling membrane or suspended ceiling.

If the visible side of the substructure is to be protected against

external inuences by masking or covering (e.g. painting), then make
sure that the surface of the structural element is not affected. The
compatibility of the adhesive tape that is used must be checked by
the worker through prior testing. To maintain the value of the visible
surface, it is generally wise to forego direct masking.

Pressure and wind loads

Closed rooms and buildings with open facades are just two examples
where wind loading and/or air pressure within a room can create
additional loads on ceilings. Where such problems can be identied,
additional measures must be taken to protect the stability and security of the ceiling and components within the ceiling plane.

OWAconstruct systems are designed to support the tiles and suspensions system. Additional loads, such as recessed and surfacemounted lighting, air outlets, insulation overlays, curtain rails, partition
walls etc. must be taken into account separately in each individual
case. Additional measures may be required to support the additional
loads as well as provide increased stability where necessary).
Hangers should not be used to support loads such as electrical
cables etc.
According to EN 13964, the substructure is to be classied according to the maximum deection as shown in Table 6.

Note: The OWAconstruct substructure may only be loaded in

accordance with the approved tables. If the ceiling is being used to
provide any form of re resistance additional or independent hangers
should be provided.

Individual system guides for each system show construction details,

dimensions and components for all OWAconstruct suspension
systems. Detailed information on OWAconstruct components and
accessories can be found in the OWAlifetime collection price list.
Before planning or installing an OWAcoustic ceiling, the user should
satisfy themselves that the leaet reects the most up to date information on the system and any standards that may relate to its use.

OWAconstruct proles fall into deection Class 1 according to

EN 13964 (Table 1) (maximum deection = L/500 4 mm).
To achieve this classication the proles should not be notched,
drilled or altered in any other way that may affect its structural characteristics.

membrane materials
connection and fastening elements
(top holder)
The humidity level within a room not only affects the membrane
material but may also have an effect on the suspension system and
associated components. These are generally manufactured from cold
rolled steel and should have the correct level of corrosion resistance
to match the proposed installation environment.
Excerpt from EN 13964:
The environmental conditions are dened in Table 7.

Condition
Building components generally exposed to varying
relative humidity up to 70 % and varying temperature
up to 25 C but without corrosive pollutants.
Building components frequently exposed to varying
relative humidity up to 90 % and varying temperature
up to 30 C but without corrosive pollutants.
Building components exposed to an atmosphere with
a level of humidity higher than 90 % and accompanied
by a risk of condensation.
More severe than the above.

In EN 13964, Table 8 gives the minimum requirements for corrosion

protection according to the classes of Table 7.
Classes of corrosion protection of metal substructure components and membrane components are dened in table 8
of EN 13964.
Standard OWAtecta metal ceiling panels are made of sheet steel
and have a ZE 25/25 electro-galvanised or ZE60/ZE60 hot dip galvanized surface. This corresponds to either corrosion protection class A
or B of Table 8.
OWAtecta subconstruction components have a 7 10 m zinc coating on all sides and therefore meet the requirements of both class A
and class B of the table 8.
It is important to ensure that the corrosion resistant protection is not
damaged before or during installation or later when in general use.
Where components are cut or damaged, they must be treated to
ensure the required level of resistance is not compromised.
Contact corrosion
Corrosion due to the interaction of different materials must be
prevented by introducing the correct protective measures (as shown
in EN ISO 129443-3 point 5.10). These should be identied prior to
installation to prevent failure at a later date.

121400

To be able to create a friction-tted connection between the bare

ceiling, roof, binders etc. and the OWAtecta suspension system,
only approved fasteners are to be used. In the case of anchoring in
a rm foundation, the relevant ETA (European technical approval)
of the particular connection device must be complied with as a rule
according to DIN EN 13964.
The instructions of the dowel manufacturer or fastener must be
observed. The respective applicable approvals or the building inspectorate test reports for the fastening elements (possibly pull-out tests)
must be taken into consideration.

Delivery
Our general terms of sale, delivery and payment apply.

Transport and storage

OWAtecta products must always be stored in a way that ensures
they are not exposed to moisture, dust or mechanical inuences.
Additionally, the following points must observed:
In the event of delivery on pallets, the panels must be stored on
the pallets until their installation.
Cartons must always be stored with the designated side upwards.
No foreign material may be stored on the pallets or the cartons.
They may not be stepped on or used as a seat or ladder.
When storing metal panels, care must be taken to ensure that the
panels are not damaged by the supporting surface.
The particular installation company is responsible for the storage.
Metal panel packages may not be stacked higher than 2 m.
Transport routes within the building site must be reduced to a
minimum.
When possible, centralized storage places should be designated
on each oor.
In the event of maintenance work, care must be taken to ensure
demounted ceiling panels are placed on one of their long sides
and carefully leant against a wall, with the nished surface facing
the wall. Panels are never to be stored on the decorative surface.

Basics technical guidelines

Safety

Environment and disposal

Thin walled materials must be handled with care to avoid personal

injury and product damage.

The use of OWAtecta metal products provides an easy to recycle

ceiling. Ceiling is easy to de-construct. Materials are easy to identify
and recycle. Materials do not contain asbestos or formaldehyde.

The installer must ensure that all associated risks are minimised and a
full risk assessment is carried out.

Cleaning and care

The standard nish for OWAtecta ceiling panels is an electrostatic
polyester powder coating. Other types of nishes are available upon
request.

Recycling of packing material

OWA in Germany has reached a recycling agreement for all packaging materials (cartons, pallets, PE foils ) with INTERSEROH
AG, contract no. 27681.
A similar recycling organisation may be present in your country.
Please contact your local sales ofce for further information.

Normally, our products do not need cleaning unless the room environment, climate control, ventilation or use makes the ceilings visibly
dirty. Where this happens, the following actions may be considered.

Prof. Dr. R. Mutters

For the cleaning of visible surfaces, we recommend the use of

mild, lukewarm, soapy water (standard household washing-up
liquid) or diluted alcohol based window cleaning agent using a
clean soft-bre cloth. Finally, theceiling can be wiped over with
a chamois leather. Any oily or greasy residues can be removed
with white spirit, however, this has to be carefully applied to avoid
any detrimental effect on the sheen. In all cases, we recommend
that a small trial area be tested before cleaning the whole ceiling.
Scouring agents are not permissible.

For installation in hygiene-sensitive areas,

please see OWA-brochure no. 9398.

Painting the ceiling is another possibility, but should be carried out

by professional painters. Again, we would recommend a trial area
as de-greasing or sanding may be required. Care should also be
taken to ensure the reaction to re classication is not affected.
Painting is not recommended for perforated panels, as the
acoustic performance may be impaired.

Installation and removal of panels

Wind safety (on the inside of a building)

The panels for the clip-in systems are manufactured with pips on two
parallel edges to provide a friction connection with the clip-in proles.
The panels are pushed into the clip-in proles until an audible click is
heard.

Wind loads can also occur on the inside of a building (entrance area
etc.). The planner should formulate detailed requirements for this.
Possible structural solutions can be found in the following.

The removal or swinging down of the panels is only possible with the
special removal tool no. 99005. The tool is pushed into the unclamped panel joint directly next to the clip-in prole. The spring hinge
of the tool must be on the side of the panel to be removed. After the
spring has clicked into place in the panel edge, the panel can be
carefully withdrawn from the clip-in prole. The same procedure is to
be applied to the other panel edges.

The tiles can be secured against falling down - e.g. in the event of
high wind pressure - with the help of security clip no. 68E.
The clip is suspended from the perforation in the panel and clipped
on to the clamping rail. In this way the next panel is also secured. Two
security clips per panel are necessary. If the security clip is used, the
panel cannot be demounted or swung down.

Swinging down of panels

Individual panels can be selected to swing down in system S 31. For
this, a fold-down spring element no. 86E must be snapped on to the
clip-in section no. 87E in the area of the tile joint that is to serve as
hinge. Both adjacent panels can then be swung down in opposition
to each other. If a swing down spring hinge is likewise arranged on
the panel joint after the next one, an area the size of two panels can
be opened in the ceiling by swinging down.

3
Wall perimeters
The distance between the top of the U prole edge and the underside of the metal panel is 96 mm and cannot be adjusted. This means
that the wall angles must be xed accurately.

96

5
The panels are provided with so-called stopping tabs at the clamped
edges to guarantee a neat panel joint.
For access/hingeable tiles, the stopping tabs must be bent over in the
area of the fold-down spring elements.
In the case of rectangular panels, it is the other way round,
i.e. if they are not swung down, the elds stamped into the ends have
to be pressed inwards (stop).
System S 32 differs from S 31 only by every second panel joint being
equipped with a swing down spring hinge. As a result, all panels can
be swung down. By pushing the folded back panels onto the clamping rail, the opening space of the ceiling between the clamping rails
can be made even larger.

Clean room ceiling

In the case of use of non-perforated metal tiles, system S 31
meets the conditions for clean room ceilings (cf. OWA-brochure
no. 895 ceilings for clean rooms).

General notes
Clip-in panels with integrated lighting as a compact component are
available for systems S 31 and S 32.

96

For this, for uneven walls, the joint between the wall angle and wall
must be sprayed out with acrylic or an equivalent elastic material.

If the location point of the lighting to be installed is not known, connector clip no. 12E can be used as an alternative to hanger bracket
no. 11E provided the void height permits this.

The distance between the top edge of U prole no. 70E and the
underside of the metal panels is then 146 mm instead of 96 mm.
As a result, most lighting can be installed irrespective of the location
of the U proles.

Installation of lighting
Please note: the lights must be arranged between the carrier sections No. 70E.
(The installation height of the lighting is normally greater than the
distance between panel and carrier section.)

Electrical cables are not to be laid onto the ceiling or suspension

system.
Coordination with the electrical planner or installer is important to enable the installation of additional or independent suspension. Experience shows that the installation of hangers retrospectively is more difcult, more expensive and they are therefore more
likely to be omitted leaving a potentially serious, concealed defect.
