Nel corso del 2015 si parlato molto di
cognitive computing, ovvero di una nuova
epoca, appena iniziata, in cui i computer
sono capaci di imparare e comunicare direttamente. Da IBM con il suo Watson a
Microsoft con il lancio di Windows 10 e
lassistente digitale Cortana, alle convention di SAS e Oracle ogni appuntamento
con temi dedicati ai dati o a Internet degli
oggetti (IoT) hanno esaltato la nuova era in
cui il computer pi intelligente, al punto
da anticipare i nostri bisogni prima ancora
di essere interrogato. Queste conclusioni
sono in genere presentate ai responsabili
informatici o marketing delle aziende. Di
fatto per anche progettisti, disegnatori,
ingegneri meccanici, tutti coloro cio che
hanno un ruolo nella creazione di nuovi
articoli (incluse le attrazioni per i parchi)
possono gi contare su tecnologie per creare prodotti il cui limite dettato solo dalla
fantasia.
Le prossime frontiere del design sono
state presentate nel corso dellAutodesk
University, lappuntamento annuale degli
utenti dei prodotti Autodesk, marchio sotto
il quale sono distribuiti prodotti come Maya,
Autocad, Inventor, Revit, ovvero i software
leader nel settore della grafica per lentertainment e la progettazione meccanica.
Jeff Kowalski, CTO di Autodesk ha

For example, in his presentation,
Kowalski talked about how over the
past 5 years Autodesk has worked
with Airbus to define the design of
the aircraft of the future. The project
includes a general vision of the new
look in terms of design, but Autodesk
has also started to make prototypes of
parts of the plane, such as the panel
separating the pilot cabin from the
rest of the aircraft and where the cabin crew seats are integrated: the panel
currently in use has been in place for
decades, and the challenge was how
to possibly make it better. Airbus
supplied its algorithms of goals and
limits to create the new generation
of panels. Autodesk tools worked
through the data and the goals of the
new design, and the result was a heap
of thousands of possible solutions,
from which Airbus engineers chose
the final product: a panel that is more
flexible, resistant, and at the same
time lighter than current panels by
almost half. The difference amounts
to 25kg per aircraft, which may look
insignificant, but when multiplied for
the whole Airbus fleet the savings in
terms of costs, energy and pollution
become considerable.
This process is what Autodesk
calls Generative Design and it is

the result of an evolution. Traditionally, each product stems from instructions given by a human being: in the
prehistoric era a stone only affected
the point it hit, in ancient sculptures
a scalpel only had a role where the
sculptor wanted it to, and even the
most sophisticated graphics today are
made through inputs by someone using a mouse.
With Generative Design, the final
decision is still human, with someone
choosing among the options offered
by a computer. The next evolution is
called Intuitive Computer and it is
linked to the discipline of machine
learning. In this development, the
machine observes, recalls what happened and stores in its memory a sequence of events that allow it to recognize and evaluate situations. The
simplest examples shown included
computers able to recognize and describe images of one or more pizzas in
an oven, a speeding motorbike, and a
bridge, which the computer was able
to determine was not stable. This kind
of technologies can probably create
the attractions of the future, and machine learning is also a discipline that
can be easily related to traveling and
animal shows. The process happening in machine learning is compared,
in fact, to reinforcement learning used
ready present in the newest digital assistants like Microsofts Cortana (see
G&PI, June 2015).
