EMPTY FRUIT BUNCHES

The Uses of Empty Fruit Bunches:

A woody brous biomass in units of approx. 65 by 30

cm. Disposal methods varies by country and region.
Empty fruit bunches are usually burnt causing air
polluQon or returned to the plantaQons as mulch.
Empty fruit bunches can be conveniently collected and
are available for exploitaQon in all Palm Oil mills.

FFB FIBERS

The Uses of Fibre:

A brous biomass oRen used in the palm oil mills

for boiler fuel for process steam and electricity.
Shells and bers are used for in-house energy
generaQon in mills but empty fruit bunches is
either used for mulching or dumped recklessly.
Palm Oil industry has the potenQal of generaQng
large amounts of electricity for capQve
consumpQon as well as export of surplus power
to the public grid.

PALM KERNEL SHELLS

The Uses of Shell:

A hard, solid biomass with high caloric value. Some used as fuel, some
disposed e.g. landll and road bases.
Palm kernel shells contain residues of Palm Oil, which accounts for its
slightly higher heaQng value than average lignocelluloses Biomass.
Compared to other residues from the industry, it is a good quality
Biomass fuel with uniform size distribuQon, easy handling, easy
crushing, and limited biological acQvity due to low moisture content.
Shells and bers are used for in-house energy generaQon in mills but
empty fruit bunches is either used for mulching or dumped recklessly.
Palm Oil industry has the potenQal of generaQng large amounts of
electricity for capQve consumpQon as well as export of surplus power to

Act as a boiler fuel supplemenQng the bre which is used as primary
fuel. In recent years kernel shells are extensively sold as alternaQve fuel
around the world. Besides selling shells in bulk, there are companies
that produce fuel briqueYes from shells which may include parQal
carbonisaQon of the material to improve the combusQon
characterisQcs.
