Introduction

Description of the problem

When officers pull over individuals as suspects in a crime because of their

race and stereotypical features. This problem is not new but the issue is not

been spoken about as much as other subjects in the government dealing with

policy. There are a number of African American that are unaware of the ways

and the issue of Racial Profiling. Though there are a number of efforts to stop

racial profiling, there needs to be some efforts developed by governments at

state and local levels participation. Participation should not come in just one

form developed by the government in the form of policy, use of technology,

and community involvement. The efforts should be solid and well thought out

by the officials who will be manning the cases. There should be solution that

will not humiliate citizens while allowing traffic officers to do their jobs.

Attributes to be measured

The attributes that will be measured will be based on each question on the

survey in which I created. Those attributes include age, gender, and race.

On a larger scale there are a number of questions that will vary from

knowledge about racial profiling to what should be done to eliminate it. The

ways in which we look at the subject determine the amount of input that will

be received by conducting this research. The research will look at the

backgrounds of the respondents but will only ask 3 questions that will allow
Project #2 3

Survey Research Report-Student Questionnaire & Survey

for a analysis of the person.

Bivariate Hypotheses

I feel that race and age will have a dramatic affect on the way in which the

respondents respond. In the case of communities and if racial profiling a

problem there will be a need to bring in a control variable that would bring in

another dimension. Age will most definitely have an affect on how the

respondents information lines up in the bivariate cases. I also feel that there

will also be a great presence of women throughout the bivariate cases.

Multivariate Hypotheses

Multivariate analysis require a number of tactics. I used the notion that the

outcomes would be about the same as the bivariate analysis. I think that the

variable gender will be able to change the entire affect of the questions that

will be asked. Also, the multivariate outcome will look deeply at the questions

while showing that women care more about the subject of racial profiling

methods. Females will be more inclined to support written policy for the sake

of their men. The analysis will look at this information and will find out if

these factors have as huge a role as determined here in the hypotheses.

Rationale

The fact that there was not much involvement from other races makes

observing their contributions very interesting. When looking at the other

races information the only other race that answer outside of the field will be
Project #2 4

Survey Research Report-Student Questionnaire & Survey

Hispanic and those who answered other. The way in which the data will be

analyzed will take a look at the way in which the dominate group answered.

The dominant group will be African American and their numbers will be at the

top of the graph for never as well with rarely being the second highest.

Univariate Graph 1-3 Discussion

The study on racial profiling focused on college students and I find that in

some instances college students are not the most truthful individuals. From

my understanding there may be some truth to the ages mentioned in the

graph because of my tactics. I used facebook as an online source to

accumulate more responses from individuals. I am confident that the largest

group of respondents were individuals 21 through 24. The results are very

satisfying and the amount of error must typically be small. I like that the

smallest number of respondents were 55 and over, while others did not

respond at all and were not included in the graph such as 41-54.

The Female population was represented just a bit more than the male end.

The data acknowledges that there is a higher presence of female participation

when dealing with certain issues. The other assumption that can be made is

that the amount of people surveyed were females due to the area or other

demographic factors that may be found later in the the analysis. There are a

number of other factors that may lead to assumptions that may lead to future

research.

Viewing the respondents and their race makes it interesting to see what

exactly could the results of this survey look like had there been a larger

variation in race. The fact that the survey and its respondents were

conducted on a Historically Black College or University. There may have been

different outcome with the data had there been a difference in dominant

groups. I appreciate that there are a number of different races listed but I am

even more pleased that I have the data available to me to analyze the

thoughts of the African American community.

The data compiled in this section proves that most individuals who were

surveyed have a overall scattered knowledge of what Racial Profiling is. I

chose to add this as the first question for the the purpose of analyzing the

other categories of data that some respondents may have been forced to

answer. It is really interesting that the majority of respondents were neutral

on their knowledge of the subject. The next category after neutral was

somewhat expert with expert following close behind. The data shows that

although there were a number of individuals that were knowledgeable of how

this issue is important to society. Given knowledge on the subject did not

have a dramatic affect on the data.

When asked if racial profiling was an issue in the communities, the data

proved that overall it was. The question that developed when analyzing this

graph was rather or not these areas were urban areas. The use of this data

can point out that the individuals in these communities may need extra

assistance with this issue. If I were to look closer at the subject and research

further it would be helpful to know what communities these were and if this

information can be used to implement new policy. This section of the data

also allows me to make assumptions about the demographics of the

respondents because they are in fact a part of a smaller community, Tuskegee

University students have some similar backgrounds.

When individuals were asked if they were in a situation that they directly

experienced racial profiling in the last 3 years the most common responses

were never and rarely. When I created this survey I believed that individuals

would have chosen periodically and seldom more than 16 and 11 percent.

The reason behind this may have a lot to do with the age group and

backgrounds of the those surveyed. Though this information is surprising the

results show that there are a number of people who know that this is a

problem but it does not directly affect them. Not to say that one day this

information could change for them given their future situations and

endeavors.

The data that was included in Graph 6 correlates with the information with

the information contained in this graph. The direct affect and indirect affects

are about the same and show that there needs to be more education on the

subject of racial profiling. The fact that there are a number of individuals who

don't side with and exact and secure variable, makes me question the data

and the respondents. The choice in 3 year gap was chosen because of the

age group of the students and members of the community that were surveyed.

Although there are a number of time gaps I could have chosen I wanted the

time to be recent enough for the respondent to remember and recall

experiences that may have been overlooked.

With 72percent of individuals agreeing that the Government should address

this issues makes this entire survey relevant. The respondent recognize that

this issue needs a bit of force behind it in the form of government. When

government is chose to come into view of respondents of the survey, the

standards of living can be surveyed and recognized as average for all citizens.

The amount of people that responded yes exhibits to me that there must be

some type of research done to identify what should be done by the

government and what actions should be taken. The government should

assume some responsibility to the actions of their citizens and should be

identified as a immediate need. The respondents may have found that the

government would serve as a superb mediator.

When I asked myself this question in developing this survey and its content, I

found it hard to get my mind around what exactly a respondent might assume.

I found that my thoughts varied from attitudes and the need to change them.

The way in which the respondents decided to agree that the government can

work in different ways to eliminate racial profiling. Those who answered no

are expected to think that the attitudes dealing with race may not be changed

because they were developed at an young age or during a specific experience.

The fact that those who answered were a bit torn between on the two answers

leads me to believe that this question deserves research and background.

When respondents chose this option it included video cameras and voice

recorders. The distribution of respondents on different issues were not evenly

so, but they were close in range. Government involvement in certain issues is

sometimes looked at as an invasion. With the basic civil rights in place and

some that are a bit more in depth, there should not have to be a large number

of cases reported in order for this subject or receive a second look by the

government and its officials.

The way that the data in this graph turned out confirmed that African

American on Tuskegee University's campus showed that the have never been

directly affected by racial profiling. All other races showed low numbers

when dealing with the direct contact with this type of discrimination. I

predicted that there would be more reports of individual cases on an often

basis reported by respondents. Thought the numbers are low it shows that

there are some cases across the board and can be compiled to develop a new

category. The way that the question was asked may have showed that some

people were unable to identify exactly what the word direct meant in relation

to racial profiling. The tactic used in creating this survey could have been

decided as another area for observation in the future.

the ways in which one group answered. The individuals who chose no were

about 3 percentages lower than the respondents who favored yes. The

Individuals that are African American feel that race is a problem in their

communities no matter where that is for them. African Americans sometimes

have issues that need to be focused on more by the government and the race

as whole. Though there are some pitfalls that plague the African American

Race, the issues have to be taken care of in a round about way. Routine traffic

stops are beginning to plague our societies on a daily basis. Though this data

does prove that there are issues dealing with racial profiling in different

communities. The data does not look closely at the fact that there are ways

that different that people identify within their own communities.

This graph looks at the responses to the question if racial profiling is a

problem in their communities based on race, and the female respondents.

The amount of people that were African Americans responded yes to the

question. Now there are some other races that did respond but there are also

a lesser numbers that are in both categories of yes and no. Hispanics find

that there are problems in their communities with whites and those who

answered other were under the no category. I do think that this is no mistake

that African Americans reported higher numbers than other groups.

Project #2 32

Survey Research Report-Student Questionnaire & Survey

Additonal Analysis

While reviewing the data contained in the surveys, tables, and graphs, I found

that there was a need to look into the types of areas that the respondents

reside. I questioned if the data could have been more solid when dealing with

the way that the questions were asked as well. As far as further research, I

would like to look into the different ways that individuals in urban low income

areas would suggest mending the problems of racial profiling. The difference

in male and female responses were not very dramatic, but I would also like to

look into and analyze the difference in female vs. male profiling cases.

Summary and Conclusion

Overall this report opened my eyes to the different views of the world that

change by race, gender, and age. In the past while working with different

subjects, I did not understand how important it was to look into the bivariate

and multivariate comparisons. The comparisons dealing with age allowed me

to see that thee were different concerns that were developed throughout the

racial profiling subject. There were large number of women that were also

concerned with the issue, which makes me wonder if male and female that are

African American are being treated the same when it comes to race. As a

person whom has been indirectly racially profiled on several different

occasions, there is most definitely a problem when it comes to suburban areas

and race. This is not to say that African Americans and any other races can't
Project #2 33

Survey Research Report-Student Questionnaire & Survey

perform this act on their own race. This report just shows that knowledge on

the subject should be available to those who are affected directly and

indirectly.
