THE PRIESTHOOD: CHALLENGE TO YOUNG MEN TODAY

I recall reading a successful recruiting ad that the Marine Corps ran: We Dont Promise You
a Rose Garden. It ran in the 80s when prosperity was high and jobs were easy to obtain. Many
young men werent fooled by the lure of high pay and material happiness. The Marine Corps
challenged them and they accepted. The priesthood is much like the marines in that it requires
toughness, integrity, self-discipline and sacrifice. In fact, their leader and brother-priest, Jesus
Christ, was almost beaten to death and then crucified. Of course, young men today who enter
seminaries dont anticipate such a fate. However, during the early years of our nation, when antiCatholic sentiment was at its height, it wasnt unheard of that a priest was beaten or even
hanged!
We might ask ourselves, if such good qualities are necessary in a priest, who in his right mind
would want to become one? The answer would be anyone who wants to help people save their
souls, teach the truth, and offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The challenge is truly therefor
a priest has other obligations besides administering the sacraments. He finds himself fighting for
the poor, the hungry, the homeless, or almost any good thing that you could think of, and all on
his own time! Father Joseph Gorentz, my classmate throughout 12 years at Arma Schools and
the man who introduced me to Fr. John Reinkemeyer, once told me that he couldnt have
imagined a more thrilling life. He remarked, We deal in eternity, far beyond the sky! His life
was cut short with cancer, but he left an impression on meone of respect for all priests, no
matter any shortcomings they might have as human beings.
We, in the Wichita diocese, have been fortunate in the number of young men who have
chosen to become priests. We have great promise for the future; however, other dioceses have not
enjoyed such numbers perhaps due to spiritual erosion in a strongly materialistic world, a lack of
inspiration from the religious, or attitudes of parents toward priests. I tend to think this lack of
vocational interest has much of its origins in a change of attitude toward marriage, which
changed the attitude toward home, which, in turn, changed neighborhoods, parishes, dioceses,
and ultimately, the culture, itself ! Many new parents today want a showy home, with a few, wellspaced children. From this kind of family, we get little emphasis on hard work, sacrifice for
family, or concern for the poor and others who fall short. Vocations come from strong, faithdriven families who teach their children the basic core values of life. A Christ-like father and a
kind, loving mother are basic ingredients for a sons priestly vocation.
It isnt all tough, Fr. Gorentz added as he spoke of being a priest. Theres much joy, laughs,
and wonderful fraternity with brother-priests. You find an unbelievable number of people who
love you, who cant do enough for you, and who think youre the greatest thing that ever
happened to them. For the wife and children you will not have, thousands of families take you
into their hearts. Eligible young men should think and pray about the possibility that God
wants them to become priests. God speaks loudly; hopefully, some will hear Him.

THANK YOU!

Dear St. Michaels parishioners,

I wanted to extend a big thank you to the parish for your
support of the medical mission trip to the Philippines that I
have the opportunity to be a part of. Father Roger and I leave
soon for the Philippines, and will be gone from March 4-13.
Please keep us in your prayers. I really appreciate all of you
joining in the mission through financial contributions, donated
supplies, and prayers. Every act of kindness and generosity
truly reflects the love of Christ. Without your help, it would
not be possible for us to extend this same love to the people of
the Philippines. So once again, thank you for the support. I will
be sure to come back and share my experience with you all, so
you see what a difference you helped make.
Thanks and God Bless,
Madison Smith
