1.

A researcher is interested in finding the answer to a question, Do students grammatical errors in

writing correlate significantly with their grammatical errors in speaking? As a tentative answer to this
question, he hypothesizes, There is a significant correlation between students grammatical errors in
writing and their grammatical errors in speaking. To do his research, he selected 12 students and they
were given tests of writing and speaking. The errors were found as follows.

Analyze the data using Person Product Moment Correlation and test the hypothesis!

2. A researcher wants to measure the contribution of language aptitude and learning motivation on
the students English learning achievement. He hypothesizes that language aptitude and learning
motivation are significant predictors of English achievement. Twelve students are randomly
selected from the population and they are asked to complete the Modern Language Aptitude Test,
the Learning Motivation Test Battery, and an English achievement test. The data from the three
instruments are as follows. Test the hypothesis.

3. A researcher wants to measure the effect of individualized instruction on students achievement.
He hypothesizes that the achievement of students taught by using individualized instruction is
significantly higher than the achievement of students taught by using classical technique. Thirty
students are randomly selected from the population and they are randomly assigned to
Experimental Group (N = 15) and Control Group (N = 15). The experimental group is taught
using the individualized instruction, while the control group is taught using the classical
technique. At the end of the experiment, the two groups are given the same test and the results are
as follows. Test the hypothesis.

4. A researcher wants to measure the effect of text types (scientific and literary texts) on students
reading comprehension. He hypothesizes that students get significantly different scores in the
reading comprehension tests of scientific texts and literary texts. Ten subjects are selected and
they are given reading comprehension tests of both scientific texts and literary texts. By using the
following data, test the hypothesis.

5. A researcher wants to measure the effect of parents education background on students academic
achievement at school. In terms of their education background, students parents are classified
into four groups: Elementary School (ES), Junior High School (JHS), Senior High School (SHS),
and University (Uni.) graduates. He hypothesizes that students with different parental education
background have significantly different academic achievement at school. Fifty subjects
participate in the study and the data are as follows. Test the hypothesis.

6. A teacher wants to study the effect of games on students speaking skill improvement. A quasi-experimental
research is carried out with two existing classes: Class A being the experimental group is taught with Games
and Class B being the control group is taught with Conventional Technique. To control initial differences a
pretest is administered prior to the experiment. The researcher hypothesizes that students taught with Games
have different speaking skills from those taught with Conventional Technique. The data of the two groups
collected from the pretest and the posttest are as follows.
