Background

There had been a great devastation in Makawanpur district due

to the earthquake that occurred on 12 th and 29th of Baishakh,
2072. The earthquake caused a lot of damage in 35 VDCs
including
Hetauda
Sub-metropolitan
city
and
Thaha
Municipality. After the catastrophe, the government of Nepal
distributed 15000 rupees to the earthquake victims. Similarly,
the government recently distributed warm clothes to them,
particularly residing in 20 VDCs in the northern part of the
district. However, no efforts have been made to reconstruct the
houses of the victims though 10 months have been elapsed
after the disastrous earthquake. Therefore, the earthquake
victims are compelled to live in the small temporary houses and
tents even during the freezing cold of winter. Moreover, the
victims dwelling particularly in the northern part of the district
(Thaha Municipality and different VDCs like Namtar, Phakhel,
Tistung, Agra etc.) are forced to live a miserable life after the
destruction of their houses.
After the earthquake, grief stricken people have become
homeless on the one hand and on the other hand the natural
sources of water have been dried up and there is cracks
everywhere in the places where they are dwelling. Therefore,
they are still in fear and there is no way out for them than
leaving their houses. Similarly, after the damage to the schools,
the students are compelled to study either in the same
damaged schools with fear or under the open sky. As the
natural sources of water have turned out to be dry after the
catastrophe, there is even no water for the toilets. In addition to
this, people are forced to use the open area as a lavatory after
the damage to the toilets in their houses and this has created
severe problems to the victims and other people residing near
the affected area. Due to the open defecation, there is fear of
the spread of epidemics adding hazardous conditions to the
grief stricken victims of earthquake.
