ABSTRACT

Stress is a universal phenomenon and can be a result from both positive and
negative experiences. Identifying the nature of stressors in the lives of
adolescents, and determining how they respond is crucial for helping
adolescents capitalize on the many changes that is taking place in their lives
and equip them with tools to make their journey through adolescence a
positive growth-oriented experience. This study aimed to identify the stressors
and the response of the adolescents. Most important limitation of the study is
that the findings cannot be generalized to the larger population. The research
participants were high school students aged 13-19 years old, has utilized the
non-probability purposive sampling, main instrument that was used in this
study is a three-part survey/questionnaire form: the Adolescent Stress
Questionnaire and the Response to Stress Questionnaire. Survey was made
through a one-on-one interview. The statistical treatments used by the
researchers were the Frequency Distribution and Percentage, Kendalls tau_b
and Cross tabulation. Findings have shown that the majority of the stressors
that are being faced by the respondents are the school performance, future
uncertainty and financial pressure; that there is no significant difference on the
respondents response when grouped according to age. However, when
grouped according to gender, religion and family income some response
showed significant difference. The associations found between different nature
of stress and different responses according to the adolescents profile (age,
gender, religion and socioeconomic status) should be further elaborated to
provide better understanding.
