Course Structure
This course is designed to bridge the gap between the role of the nursing student and
the graduate/professional nurse. Focus of course content is on leadership and
management as it relates to the individual nurse and the nursing profession. Emphasis
is placed on leadership as a mindset that facilitates both the adaptive and growth
capacity of individual patients and social systems. Students are provided the opportunity
to use clinical skills gained during previous rotations and integrate leadership behaviors,
expressly based on leadership/management theories, in providing direct patient care.
The practicum, N145 is taken concurrently with the theory course. The clinical
experience provides each student an opportunity to apply specific leadership and
management theories and principles brought forth in the classroom enhancing their
understanding and specific application. The course is designed to influence and
enhance professional behavior to improve patient outcome. Further aspects of clinical
course work are discussed in N145. Please refer any questions regarding N145 to the
N145 faculty of record.

HESI Exam
HESI Exam
Health Education Systems Incorporated (HESI) is a series of exams, case scenarios,
and remediation tools designed to enhance student NCLEX-RN success. The School of
Nursing integrates HESI throughout the program as a comprehensive assessment and

review program for all nursing students. This course utilizes the RN Specialty HESI
materials.
Practice HESI exams will be available according to the course calendar. The practice
exams will provide students with a snapshot of their current understanding. Prior to the
proctored exam, students are encouraged to use their results from the practice exams
for review.
Students are required to take the proctored, closed-book HESI exam on the date
assigned in the course calendar. Students are allowed two attempts on the exam to
earn a minimum score of 850. The first opportunity is the in-class HESI exam. If a
student misses the in-class HESI exam, this will count as a failure. In the event the
student does not achieve the minimum score on the first exam, there will be only one
retake. The retake date will be determined by the Faculty of Record.
The HESI exam accounts for 5% of the total course grade. On the first attempt, a
student who earns a score of 900 or higher will receive the full 5% and a score of 850899 will receive 4%. On the second attempt, a student who earns a score of 900 or
higher will earn 3% and a score of 850-899 will receive 2%.
Students who are unsuccessful at achieving a score of 850 in two attempts will be
required to meet with the Faculty of Record, discuss the remediation plan for the two
exams, and complete the remediation packet by 1200 on the date that semester grades
are due.
Every HESI proctored exam comes with an online program through Evolve to help
students review and improve weaknesses. This online remediation is personalized
according to individual exam performance. Students are strongly encouraged to take
advantage of these resources whether or not they are in preparation for an exam retake
or required as the result of two unsuccessful exam attempts.

Part 4: Grading Policy

The letter grade for the course is based upon your performance on in-class
assessments, papers and assignments. Note that this class is taught in a Team-Based
Learning format and as such, about 50% of your points come from group work. To pass
NURS 143 the student must achieve a cumulative average of 73% on Assessments as
well as an overall 73% in the course from total points. University and division
plagiarism/academic dishonesty policies are followed throughout the semester. Violation
of these policies will result in course failure.
Course grading is as follows:

Attendance
Late Work
Late assignments: You will lose 10% for each day your assignment is late. For
example, if an assignment is due at midnight on October 1st and you turn it in at 2 AM
on October 2nd, you will lose 10% of the total points. Late assignments will not be
accepted after three days.
There are no makeup assignments for in-class assessments/activities.
All assignments must be submitted in order to pass the course.

Asking for Assistance

If you find that you have any trouble keeping up with assignments or other aspects of
the course, make sure you let the Faculty of Record know as early as possible. As you
will find, building rapport and proactive relationships are key to becoming an effective
professional. Make sure you are proactive in informing your professors when difficulties
arise during the semester so that faculty can help you find a solution.

University Policies
Academic Honesty
Academic honesty is ensured when a student completes academic work on his/her own
merit. This concept is violated when a student gains an unfair advantage over other
students such as is the case when copying others assignments, attempting to gain
knowledge of exam items or related content, or plagiarizing published works. If any part
of your written or verbal work is suspected of academic dishonesty (whether you
benefited from or provided an unfair advantage), the School of Nursing Student
Handbook requires notification of the Universitys Student Affairs office. Once academic
dishonesty is determined to have taken place, the assignment will not be accepted, will
receive a score of zero, and the student(s) will be subject to disciplinary action
including, but not limited to, course failure or program dismissal. It is your responsibility
to review the university policy and student handbook regarding academic honesty and
plagiarism, to understand their definitions, and to consult with faculty if you need
assistance. See also the Sacramento State Policy Manual
(http://www.csus.edu/umanual/student/STU-0100.htm).

NURS 143

Spring 2016 Syllabus

Student Conduct
Participation in nursing program obligates students to demonstrate professional
behavior at all times, adhering to the Student Code of Conduct found in the Student
Handbook (see also the statements in the School of Nursing Philosophy). Additionally,
students are expected to follow the University Student Code of Conduct
(http://www.csus.edu/umanual/student/UMS16150.HTM) and to adhere to all policies
found within the School of Nursing Student Handbook.
Violation of any of these principles, whether during class times or course-related
activities, may result in one or more of the following: letter of reprimand placed in the
student file; notice of jeopardy of failing a course; failure of a course; referral to
University Student Affairs; and/or dismissal from the nursing program and/or University.
Reasonable Accommodation
If you have a documented disability and verification from the Office of Services to
Students with Disabilities (SSWD), and wish to discuss academic accommodations,
please contact your instructor as soon as possible. It is the students responsibility to
provide documentation of disability to SSWD and meet with a SSWD counselor to
request special accommodation before classes start.
SSWD is located in Lassen Hall 1008 and can be contacted by phone at (916) 2786955 (Voice) (916) 278-7239 (TDD only) or via email at sswd@csus.edu.
Special Note
Course policies are subject to change. It is the students responsibility to check SacCT
for corrections or updates to the syllabus. Any changes will be posted in SacCT.
