Notes Before you start

Geomatica Version 9.1 can operate independently of Geomatica Version 8.X. You do not need to
uninstall Geomatica 8.X until you are satisfied that Geomatica 9.1 is working properly.
SPANS 7.2 is compatible with Geomatica 8.X licensing. If you are currently managing your
SPANS 7.2 licenses through the Geomatica license manager then you should keep your
Geomatica 8.X installation.
If you are running a floating license and you decide to uninstall your previous version of
Geomatica please remember to Stop and Remove the floating license service through PCISetup
prior to uninstalling the software.

Installing PCI Software on a Windows System

This section describes how to install PCI Geomatica software installation on your Microsoft
Windows operating system. Prior to the installation, you should have the following material

Geomatica V9.1 Installation CD,

Interlock security device (dongle),
License string.

For windows, there are two ways to start the installation. The first option is to load the CD into
the CDROM, this will automatically start the setup process. Or run the command
\CDROM\setup.exe, using a command prompt or an explorer session.
Note: The remainder of this section assumes that the setup program has been activated and is
running. If you are encountering problems with the installation, please contact technical support.

Installing your PCI Software

1) Attach the interlock provided with your software to your LPT1 or your USB port, depending on
the interlock you have requested.
2) Insert the CDROM into the appropriate drive. If autorun is enabled on your system
InstallShield will start up automatically. If the setup program does not initiate automatically,
start setup.exe found at the root of the CD.
The installation of PCI software for Windows is controlled via the Install Shield, which is a
third party industry standard for Windows installation. It is designed to be as simple as
possible, and requires minimum user interaction.
3) Once the setup process has started, the Geomatica 9 installation panel will appear. Install
Shield will guide you through the following steps for the installation. You can navigate through
the installation by using the Back, Next, or Cancel buttons at the bottom of the InstallShield
interface.

Panel 1: Geomatica 9 install panel.

Select Next to move into the choice of installations.
Note: You can click Cancel at any time to stop the installation.

Panel 2: Geomatica 9 installation options panel.

This panel gives you a selection of product installations for the Geomatica 9 family of software.
The choices are Freeview, GeoGateway and Geomatica. The remainder of this install document
pertains to Geomatica. If you wish to install the other products, you are free to do so, however,
there may be some licensing restrictions.
Select the product that you wish to install. When complete, select Next to move into the
installation of that product.

Panel 3: License Agreement

Please read the License Agreement carefully. If you agree to the terms of the license agreement,
click Yes.

Panel 4: Welcome to the Installation Wizard for PCI Geomatica V9.1

Select Next to move into the installation.

Panel 5: Information
The Information dialog box opens displaying last minute instructions and notes that were not
included in the release at the time of publication. Please review and click Next when finished.

Panel 6: Choose Destination Location

The Choose Destination Location dialog box opens and allows you to select the destination
directory for your software. The default drive is set to C:\Geomatica_V91. To change the install
directory, click the Browse command button and enter a new location.
Note: we do not recommend installing into a directory with a space in the path.

Panel 7: Setup Type

The Setup Type dialog box opens. In this dialog box, you can choose between the following
installations:
Stand-alone
Floating License Server
Compact Client of a Floating License Server
Full Client of a Floating License Server

these are the program files. Installation of the Demo Files and Softcopy Manuals is optional and
will reduce the disk space required. The demo files are handy for quick demonstrations with the
software, are useful to test with if working through a problem with support, and may be referred to
by some parts of the documentation.
Note: If you have selected Lean Server during Setup Type then accept the default. Selecting the
PCI Geomatica Files will change your lean server to the full server.

Panel 9: Setup Type - Licensing

Select whether you are installing a licensed or demo version of the software. If Demo Mode is
selected, the next step will be skipped. With Demo Mode you will be restricted to files no larger
then 1K by 1K in all operations. If you received an interlock with your software the expectation is
that you are running a licensed version (even if it is a licensed evaluation).

Panel 10: Hardware Key Driver Installation

Hardware Key Driver Installation, the setup program needs to load the correct driver for your
hardware key (dongle). Select the hardware key you have.

You may encounter problems with the license manager later on if you specify the wrong dongle
type. Please ensure that you are selecting the correct dongle during the installation process. If
you have chosen an USB dongle, on reboot, the system may not find the specific driver. If this is
the case, then a driver configuration wizard panel will appear. Please follow the instructions.
Where requested for the driver, point to the following location:
\geomatica_V91\sys\nt\lic\superpro\win_nt\i386\ sntnlusb.inf
Note: there are approximately 200 Sentinel SuperPro hardware locks in circulation that appear
identical to the SentinelPro locks. On the side of the lock will be stamped Sentinel SuperPro. If
you do have one of these dongles, please select the SuperPro interlock.
Note: Glenco dongles are no longer supported for Geomatica 9. Please contact support for
assistance if you have a glenco dongle.

path is invalid you will receive a warning indicating that the license.dat file on the server cannot
be found.
Note: If you have mapped it already and it can not be found, check to make sure the main PCI
directory on the server is shared and that the client computer is mapped to the network drive.
Also check that the mapped drive and the specified path are consistent (for example if you
mapped the drive to \Geomatica_v91\etc then the PCILIC pointer will be s:\license.dat).
You can select NO on this panel, which indicates that the defaulted PCILIC path will be used and
you will have to determine the problem with the mapped drive after the installation is complete.
For a compact client you will have to specify the PCILIC path, as well as PCIMASTER.
PCIMASTER is the path to the shared PCI directory on the server.

Panel 7: Select Components

The Select Components dialog box opens. You will need to install the PCI Geomatica Files as
these are the program files. Installation of the Demo Files and Softcopy Manuals are optional
and will reduce the disk space required. The demo files are handy for quick demonstrations with
the data, are useful to test with if working through a problem with support, and may be referred to
by some parts of the documentation.
Note: If you have selected Compact Client you will not see the Select Components windows.
The installation will take you to the Select Program Folder step.

Post Installation Environment variables (UNIX),

Licensing and License Server Operations.
Setting UNIX Environment Variables
Prior to starting or licensing your PCI Geomatica Software for UNIX, the following environment
variables must be set. After the list of variables, each will be described in greater detail. Note
that all references will be made to V91. If you have a different version of the software, please
make the appropriate changes. These environment variables can be added to your .cshrc file or
setup in a shell script, so that these variables can be applied automatically.
Note: On some unix platforms the TWM desktop may be available. We do not recommend that
this desktop be uses at this time as there appears to cause problems with running PCI software.
Gnome, CDE or another desktop should be used.
For all Unix Platforms:
C Shell
If you Unix system is using csh (C shell), add the following lines to each user's .cshrc file. You
may have to change some of the environment locations based on your specific machine. For
more information, proceed to the appropriate sub headings.
Please note that the following environment variables are only examples, the location of files and
directories should be set to your system.
setenv PCIHOME_V91 /usr/geomatica_v91
setenv PCILIC $PCIHOME_V91/etc/license.dat
setenv USERHOME ../usr/workingdirectory
setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH $LD_LIBRARY_PATH:$PCIHOME_V91/lib
setenv PATH $PATH:/usr/bin
alias geomatica_91 $PCIHOME_V91/exe/geomatica
In order to use on-line help for Geomatica, Java must be enabled. The following environments
are necessary to access Java
setenv PCI_JAVA_HOME /<java>
where <java> is the directory where Java has been installed
The following are optional if you experience library problems or the path to JAVA hasnt been set
setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH $LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/<java>/lib
setenv PATH $PATH:/<java>/bin
To access Oracle the following environmental variables should be added.
setenv ORACLE_HOME /client_name/oracle/OraHome1
setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH $LD_LIBRARY_PATH:$ORACLE_HOME/lib
setenv PATH $PATH:ORACLE_HOME/bin
Bourne Shell
If you Unix system is using sh (Bourne shell), ksh (Korn shell), or bash (Bourne-Again SHell)
add these lines to each user's .profile file (or equivalent):
PCIHOME_V91=/usr/geomatica_v91
export PCIHOME_V91

14

PCILIC=$PCIHOME_V91/etc/license.dat
export PCILIC
USERHOME=/usr/workingdirectory
export USERHOME
alias geomatica_91=$PCIHOME_V91/exe/geomatica
In order to use on-line help for Geomatica, Java must be enable. The following environments are
necessary to access Java
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/<java>/lib
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
PATH=$PATH:/<java>/bin
export PATH
where <java> is the directory where Java has been installed.
PCI_JAVA_HOME=/<java>
export PCI_JAVA_HOME
To access Oracle the following environmental variables should be added.
ORACLE_HOME=/client_name/oracle/OraHome1
export ORACLE_HOME
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:$ORACLE_HOME/lib
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
PATH=$PATH:ORACLE_HOME/bin
export PATH
PCIGROUP

PCIGROUP
This environment variable is intended for developers that wish to access procedures and
executables they have developed with the PCI software toolbox without needing to copying them
into the installed software tree. Executables and ancillary files located in the pro, hlp, exe, etc,
and models directories, are searched for first in the PCI directory tree pointed to by the PCIGroup
environment variable. then in the PCIHOME_V82 tree, and finally, in the PCI directory tree
pointed to by the PCIMASTER variable.
setenv PCIGROUP $PCIHOME_V91

PCIHOME
It is necessary to set up the PCIHOME_V91 environment variable to point to the root of the
directory tree where Geomatica V91 has been installed. This setting allows users to maintain
multiple versions of PCI software on a single system. This variable can be set as follows:
setenv PCIHOME_V91 /usr/geomatica_v91

PCILIC
When the PCIHOME_V91 environment variable is set, an internal explicit link is set to the
$PCIHOME_V91/etc/license.dat file. If the location of the license.dat file is different than what is
explicitly linked, then the PCILIC environment variable should be set.
If the environment variable PCILIC exists, the software will assume it points directly to the
current, valid license.dat file (not to the directory containing the file, but to the file itself). Using
PCILIC overrides the search for $PCIHOME_V91/etc/license.dat and if the environment variable
is not set to point to a valid license data file, no further search is made.

15

In some cases, such as when sharing a single license file across several systems in a network, or
for those users who receive a supplementary license file to use with a new package, it may be
necessary to set up additional environment variables. Its use, in most cases, is optional. Using
PCILIC is useful in cases where you want to have one copy of the license data file, to be used for
all the systems you are licensed. This makes it possible for maintenance items, such as the
addition of new keys, to be performed only once.
This variable can be set as follows:
setenv PCILIC $PCIHOME_V91/etc/license.dat

USERHOME
To maintain preferences from one session to another for each individual user, the USERHOME
variable should be set. The USERHOME should be set to a directory where the user has write
permissions. This variable can be set as follows:
setenv USERHOME ../usr/workingdirectory

LD_LIBRARY_PATH and PATH

Sometimes a system library is not available with the operating system. PCI will provide some
share objects with the library path. Please set the following:
setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH $LD_LIBRARY_PATH:$PCIHOME_V91/lib
or
if ($LD_LIBRARY_PATH) then
setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH $LD_LIBRARY_PATH:$PCIHOME_V91/lib
else
setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH $PCIHOME_V91/lib
endif
If you wish to run a PACE program, or any PCI software that requires an xterm, you may have to
set the following path:
Linux:
setenv PATH $PATH:/usr/X11R6/bin
SGI:
setenv PATH $PATH:/usr/bin/X11
Solaris
setenv PATH $PATH:/usr/openwin/bin
If you do not enter this path, an error message may appear: execl file could not be found.
Note: The LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable is required if you wish to run the
executable directly from the exe directory (i.e. geomatica.exe). This variable will not be required
if you use the shell files to start the application (i.e. geomatica).

PCI_EASIHLP
This environment variable has been created for users who would prefer to use the old helper style
of help within easi.
The default for this variable is set to the HTML help system.
setenv PCI_EASIHLP HTML

16

If you wish to use the old help set the following

setenv PCI_EASIHLP HLP

Aliases
An alias provides a shortcut to a program. The PCIHOME_V91 variable must be set first, and
then an alias can be defined. The alias can be set for any of the PCI Geomatica program. For
the geomatica toolbar, the alias is set as follows
alias geomatica_v91 $PCIHOME_V91/exe/geomatica

Java
The online help for FOCUS on Unix platforms requires Java to be installed. You will need to get
the latest version of Java for your System. Geomatica Version 9.1 uses Java 1.3 or greater.
Below is a good link to download Java:
http://www.geocities.com/marcoschmidt.geo/jvm.html
This link provides the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) for several UNIX systems - the user would just
have to select and download the system that they are using. Please note that when accessing the
java help, there may be a time delay of a minute or two before the helper panel appears. The help
panel will remain active after a focus session has ended. Simply close the helper application.
The variables can be set as follows:
setenv PCI_JAVA_HOME /<java>
where <java> is the directory where Java has been installed
The following are option if you experience library problems or the path to JAVA hasnt been set
setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH $LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/<java>/lib
setenv PATH $PATH:/<java>/bin

ORACLE_HOME
The ORACLE_HOME variable is required to configure PCI Geomatica to Support Oracle 8.1.6i.
To be able to work with Oracle data directly in Geomatica, you need to ensure that the PC or
UNIX system that you are using has a proper installation of Oracle.
If you are accessing Oracle data from a server system, make sure that the system that you are
using has a proper client installation of Oracle. Check with your system administrator (or
database administrator) to find out the location of the Oracle Home directory.
Geomatica needs to know where the Oracle home directory is located to be able to access and
load in Oracle data. When installing Oracle on PC systems, the registry and path variables are all
updated automatically. On UNIX (Solaris) systems, you will have to set up a few environment
variables:
setenv ORACLE_HOME /client_name/oracle/OraHome1
setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH $LD_LIBRARY_PATH:$ORACLE_HOME/lib
setenv PATH $PATH:ORACLE_HOME/bin
where: /client_name/oracle/OraHome1 indicates the location of the Oracle home
directory.

Access to License Manager for Windows and Unix

You can start License Manager at any time. Just click the License Manager icon on the
Geomatica toolbar. For Windows you can also click the Start button, find your PCI Geomatica

17

application, and then run License Manager. For Unix you can execute PCISETUP from
Geomatica_v91/exe.
After the installing PCI Geomatica on your PC, a reboot is required (a reboot is not required for
Unix systems). The reboot is required to start system drivers that have been applied. After the
restart, the License Manager application is open. From this panel you can access the following:

Licensing procedures
Customize setup options

A Notepad window is also opens, with the heading PCI Installation Log File. You may want to
print this file for future reference. When you are finished reading or printing the Installation Log
file, close the Notepad window.
Select the License button on the LICMAN panel to get to the license manager.
Note: You may encounter problems with license manager if you have specified the wrong dongle
type. Please ensure that you are selecting the correct dongle during the installation process. To
fix the problem you can either reinstall the software with the correct options, or correct the registry
variable for PCIHLO, where S is for SentinelPro, and SP for SuperPro. Editing registry variables
can be found in section, Editing the Windows Registry.
If you have chosen an USB dongle, on reboot, the system may not find the specific driver. If this
is the case, then a driver configuration wizard panel will appear. Please follow the instructions.
Where requested for the driver, point to the following location:
\geomatica_V91\sys\nt\lic\superpro\win_nt\i386\ sntnlusb.inf

About License Manager

License
The license panel provides information about your system, your license keys, and where you are
to enter the license keys for your Geomatica software.

Entering your license key

If not already in the second License Manager panel select the License button from the License
Manager Panel or PCISetup. Once in the second License Manager, click the Enter License
Key command button. You should have a 33 character license string delivered with your
software, it is usually printed on a white piece of paper, or set to you by customer support.
Note: (if you do not have a license, please see Contact Us in the first section and send us an
email indicating your customer number, cupid, and Geomatica Version).
Note: It is not recommended to have both a valid stand alone and a floating license string in your
license.dat. Having such a combination will result in a performance problem with Geomatica,
when acquiring the licensing. To prevent this, please clean your license.dat file. This procedure
can be found in the subsection Cleaning up your License.dat file.
Copy, paste or type in the 33-character license string into the Enter License Key panel. Click on
the Accept button. The system will respond by producing a message box l indicating whether the
license key was read successfully or not. For example if the information was entered successfully
the License Information dialog box opens to confirm that your license is now updated.
Once you are satisfied that the license being applied is correct, please close the license manager
program.

18

Reading your license key from file

To use the Read Keys from File command: First, save your license key in an ASCII text file. To
insure that the License manager reads the text file properly, be sure to place a carriage return at
the end of the text file.
Click the Read Keys from File command button. When the Select License Key File dialog box
opens, select the file that contains your license key and accept the operation.
The License Information dialog box opens to confirm that your license is now updated. Once you
are satisfied that the license is being applied is correct, please close the license manager
program.

System Information
This section of the License manager panel provides information about the software Version, the
Operating System, the CPU id of the System, and the date.
For windows the CPU Id is taken from the interlock (dongle) attached to the parallel or USB port.
On Unix Systems the CPU id is determined from the hardware Ethernet address. To get this id,
you can type sysinfo at the command prompt.
The Save Information to File button allows you to save the system information to a file. This
information is needed by PCI to generate your license key, and is also important when contacting
PCI support with questions.
Note: You should provide this information whenever you contact PCI support as it provides the
most accurate record of your system.
Selecting Accept will save the information to the specified file. The file must not exist or an error
will occur. Selecting Cancel will abort the action and return you to the License panel.

License keys
This section of the License Manager panel provides a list of License Keys as read from the
license file (if found). The current license data (license.dat) file is displayed immediately below the
list of license keys. Each License Key can be selected from the list by simply clicking on it. When
selected the license key is decoded and its information displayed in the lower half of the panel in
a section entitled Current Key.
In the Current Key section you will find the status of the currently selected license string, which
are listed under License Keys. An important piece of information is Users: item. User:
Unlimited indicates a stand-alone license key. User: # indicates that the license is a floating
license code for the indicated number of users. Licensed packages for each string are listed to
the right of the panel.

Cleaning up your License.dat file

Sometimes it is necessary to remove old licenses from your license.dat file. For example, the
license string was in error, if it has expired, or there is a conflict between a stand-alone and a
floating license.
It is recommended that before any work is performed on this file, it either be backed up or the
license strings copied to another location. The license file can be found in
$PCIHOME_V91/etc/license.dat

19

Provided with your install is a clean license.dat file. Simply delete the old file, and copy the
license.dat.clean file to license.dat.
Note: You will not be able to manually clean your license.dat file with an ASCII editor, if this is
done, errors will occur when trying to run PCI software, reporting that you are not be properly
licensed.

Floating License Server (Windows) Installation and operations

The Floating License Server must be installed as either a Windows NT, 2000 or XP (professional)
service. This process is fully automated by the License Server panel. Windows 95 and 98 users
can connect to a license server, but cannot run a server directly.
There are 2 ways to install the floating license server, either through the license manager panel,
or from a command prompt.
Note: Before the server is started, a valid floating license must be applied.
A floating license key is different from a standard or node-locked license. Floating licenses allow
multiple users to access the same program files. Floating licenses allow several systems to use
protected software, without having to acquire keys for each system. The Floating License Server
application stores and manages the floating license keys on the system chosen to be the server.
When you receive your key look for a field called Floating License Users. There are three
possible options for you.
1. Floating License User:0 indicates a stand-alone license.
2. Floating License User # indicates the number of users for that license
3. Floating License User: unlimited indicates a standalone license
To access the License Server Installation/Operations, select the Customize button from the
License Manager panel. In the Customize panel, the following are available:

Get system Information this provides information for software version, OS specifics
and CPU id.
Check Floating Licenses this has 2 tabs, the first shows the list of license tickets
currently in use, and the second shows the list of licenses by package available on the
current server.
Environment Variables this displays all the environment settings currently in use, or
which may potentially be used
Floating License Server Installation/operations this allows access to install, start,
stop or remove a license server.

To install the license server select Customize from the license manager panel, select the
Floating License Server Installation/Operations button, then select the Install License Server
as Service. To start the service click Start (installed) License Server. The License Server is
enabled for your operating system.
The license server services can also be managed through a command prompt. You have to be
located in the /geomatica_v91/exe directory. To run any of the services you have to type the
following:
licservr -install
licservr -start
licservr -stop
licservr -remove

20

licservr -help
After the service is installed and started you will find it in the Services section of Administrative
Tools via the Control Panel.
Note: If you are applying floating license keys to an already existing floating license server you
must stop and restart the floating license service from the Customize options from License
Manager for the additional keys to be recognized.

Floating Server Environment Settings

In some instances, it may required to add additional environment variables in your systems
registry to operate a floating license. The following environment variables are specific to cross
network communication, server identification and platform specific issues.
Presently, PCI software may use the following environment variables:

LICSERV_PORT used for setting the communication port between networks.

LICSERV_HOST used for setting the HOST (server) machines identification for client
operations.
PCILIC_OTHER used for Windows 2000 Servers to identify the superpro dongle.

LICSERVR_PORT: Setting the Port

Each time the floating server is restarted, it acquires a new port ID. In most cases this is not a
problem, as the clients and server reside on the same network. However, if a client needs to
access the server, which resides behind a firewall or on another network, an available port id may
have to be allocated.
To hardcode a port id for the server, please perform the following
1. Stop the License Server
2. Open the registry and go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PCIGroup\PCIV91\env
3. Add the following environment variable to the v91 registry
LICSERV_PORT
1066
where 1066 is a port id you want to assign.
4. Restart the server.

LICSERV_HOST: Setting the Host

In cases where the client and server have to communicate across networks or firewalls and the
host name of the server is not recognized, a domain or IP address can be applied.
1. Stop the License Server
2. Open the registry and go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PCIGroup\PCIV91\env
3. Add the following environment variable to the v91 registry
LICSERV_HOST
999.99.99.99
where 999.99.99.99 is the IP address of the server. Also, the full domain
name can be substituted.
4. Restart the server.

21

PCILIC_OTHER: Setting License Server specifically on a Win2000

Server
To setup up a Floating License server on a Windows 2000 Server machine only with a SuperPro
dongle. This does not apply to regular Windows 2000 workstations. Please set the following
registry environment variable:
1. Stop the License Server
2. Open the registry and go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PCIGroup\PCIV91\env
3. Add the following environment variable to the v91 registry
PCILIC_OTHER
WIN2000SERVER
4. Restart the server.
Note: Please add the above registry variable before the license server is licensed. Wait
approximately 2 minutes before accessing the license manager. Apply the license key and start
the service. Wait another 2 minutes before accessing any geomatica software.

Floating Servers and Clients

There are no licensing or installation issues for clients of a floating server. The only thing that you
need to ensure is that the clients map the server share with the same drive letter that was used at
installation time, and that you enable the drive mapping to reconnect at login. This will ensure that
when you log back in, the connection is reestablished.
For compact clients, if your mapping fails, you can determine the appropriate share mapping
using the following steps.
To display the appropriate share mapping:
1. Locate the PCI Geomatica Icon.
2. Right click the Icon to display the shortcut menu and select Properties.
The Properties panel opens.
3. The Target field will display the value used for drive mapping at the time of the
installation.
For full clients, if your mapping fails, you can determine the appropriate mapping by using PCI
License Manager. In PCI License Manager, select the Customize option, and then select
Environment variables to view the current setting of the PCILIC variable. This will have the
expected mapping for the server connection. Map your server share as this drive.
Note: Geomatica V9.0 client software can be fully accessible with a Geomatica V9.1 license
server. In order to allow Geomatica v9.0 software to access the new server, edit the system
registry of the client machine and point the PCILIC variable to the respective Geomatica V9.1
location. If a thin client is being used, then the PCIMASTER variable must also be edited.

Checking your Floating Licenses

When the Floating License Server starts, a file named license.srv is created in the
geomatica_v91/etc directory where the license.dat file is located. When a program runs on a
client computer, it contacts the Floating License Server using information stored in the
license.srv file. The number of licenses you have purchased is stored with the floating license
key. All systems running a specific version of PCI software must share the same license.dat file.
You can install local copies of software on all systems and share a license.dat file by setting the
PCILIC environment variable to a common drive or you can install your software on the server
and use a thin client setup.

22

Note: You can run the License Servers for PCI Software Versions 7.x, 8.x and 9.x at the same
time. However, the license.dat that is being used for the specific version of the software must
reside in different locations. If now, there maybe problems when running the multiple servers.

Reading the Floating License Report

The Floating License Report lists the number of licenses available on your network, and the
number of users accessing the software. There are two reports available in the Floating License
Report window:

Users - this shows a list of license tickets currently in use,

License this shows a list of licenses, by package available on the current server.

The reports update regularly and show current license information for your system.
The Users data sheet lists ticket identification, software package, program name, and user
identity. If a user runs more than one program using an identical package ticket, the first program
using the ticket is shown. The reference count will reflect the number of programs using the ticket.
The Licenses data sheet shows a list of software packages for active floating licenses, the
number of purchased floating licenses, licenses in use, and licenses available.

Viewing the Environment Variables

The Environment Utility data sheet facilitates PCI Geomatics support calls. It shows a complete
list of environment settings for your setup.
To access and use the Environment Utility select Environment Variables in the Customize panel.
The Environment Utility shows a list of system paths and settings that your PCI software is using.
Windows systems show information for the PCI software in your system registry. Variable names
are shown in the right column of the list. The path for the variable is shown in the left column.
When an environment setting is not applicable to your system installation, or is not set, the value
field shows, Not Defined.
Note: You can save the list of your system settings to a text file and send it to PCI Geomatics
support when trying to resolve problems. You can send the file by regular mail, e-mail, or fax.

Additional Environment Variables

PCI_EASIHLP: Setting old style help for EASI
This registry environment variable has been created for users who would prefer to use the old
helper style of help within easi.
The environment variables for Geomatica can be found in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PCIGroup\PCIV91\env
The default for this variable is set to the HTML help system.
PCI_EASIHLP
HTML
If you wish to use the old help set registry entry to the following:
PCI_EASIHLP
HLP

License Server for Unix

Prior to the installation and starting of the license server on UNIX, ensure that the proper
environment variables have been set, and that a proper license of the server has been applied.

23

No special configuration switches are required other then running the license server application in
the background. As an example, for version 9.1, the following line would start the license server:
$PCIHOME_V91/etc/licservr &
Please note: Depending on your system setup, and version, the $PCIHOME_V91 environment
variable, might not be set up at the time the daemon is started. This will depend on how you set
up your system's environment and the version of the software installed. You might need to use
the full path to the licservr application.
To remove the license server, simply use a kill command. Running the psg command on UNIX
will list all of the present processes on that machine. The process can then be stopped by using
the kill -9 nnnnn command (where nnnnn is the process identifier).

Creating a Start Up Script

PCI's license server, in a Unix / Linux environment, can be automatically started at each boot by
creating a startup script in the "rc" or "init" directory. An existing script can be copied from
/etc/init.d and edited. Relevant lines from this script would look like this example from a Solaris
system:
case "$1" in
'start')
echo "Starting PCI license server: "
PCIHOME_V91=/disk1/software/pci_v91
cd $PCIHOME_V91/exe
../etc/licservr &
;;
'stop')
/usr/bin/pkill -x -u 0 licservr
;;
Save this script with the name pci license in /etc/init.d (or /etc/rc.d/init.d). Put a link in /etc/rc3.d
(or /etc/rc.d/rc3.d) called S99pcilicense pointing to this init.d script. This should now run when the
system enters run level 3.
Every time the license service is restarted a new license.dat and license.srv has to be copied or
ftpd from the server to the Geomatica\v91\etc directory on the client machine(s).

Cross Platform Floating Licenses

Geomatica is supported as a cross platform floating license. There are two methods to configure
this setup and these methods are described below. These instructions assume you have
reviewed the manual and have been successful in setting up a floating license server.

Using a File Share

In a cross platform floating license situation all you need is the client to see the license.dat file on
the server. The most effective way of doing this is to utilize a file sharing software on your
network.
In order to point the PCILIC variable you need to have a file sharing system in place or be able to
make a share as you do on Windows. Linux RedHat does come with SMB, or NFS can be
purchased for Windows. You should consult your operating system vendor for more information

24

on these products for other Platforms. If a file share system is in place then the instructions for
installing on a homogenous network described in the manual apply
You will also need to install Geomatica on each client machine.
Note: Be sure to install on the client with the appropriate CD as Windows and Unix are not
usually delivered on the same. Once the floating license service is up a running properly, all that
is needed is to ensure that each client is point the PCILIC variable to the license.dat file found in:
/servermachine/path/Geomatica_V91/etc/license.dat
or
DRIVE:\geomatica_v91\etc\license.dat.
On windows this can be done at the system, users, or the registry level. On Unix this should be
included in the users login script (.cshrs).

Using FTP
If you dont have the proper FILE/DRIVE sharing software in place you can use the second
option. When the license server is started it creates a file called licserv.srv. This contains the
name/ip address, port#, and process id of the server machine. If you have an installation of PCI
on a client machine all you need to do is copy the license.dat file and the license.srv file from the
server to the /geomatica_v91/etc directory on the client machine. When you start the software on
the client it does not find a valid license in the license.dat file and uses the license.srv file to know
where to look for a proper license. This scenario works but it creates issues that require some
imaginative system administration work
On Unix each time the server is rebooted you have to restart the license server, so you probably
have this in a startup script. On windows this is installed as a service and starts automatically.
Each time the license server is restarted the license.dat and license.srv files have to be copied or
ftpd from the server to the client machine. In the case of a Unix server these files can be ftpd at
boot time by adding the appropriate commands to the script you use to start the license server.
An ftp service (such as the ftp component or Microsofts IIS) needs to be running on the Windows
client side to receive the files.

25

Uninstalling PCI Geomatica Software

Note: Install Shield will not remove any new files from the Geomatica Tree during an uninstall.
However it is wise to make a backup of any scripts you may have stored in Geomatica_v91/pro;
any customer programs you have stored in Geomatica_v91/exe; any files you have modified in
Geomatica_v91/etc (i.e. user defined projection added to userpro.txt), and any data you have
stored in Geomatica_v91/demo or Geomatica_v91/user. Backing up these files is a must if you
are doing a manual uninstall for Windows or uninstalling on UNIX.
In order to properly remove Geomatica from you machine you will need to uninstall the software.
For MSWindows this is managed with the Install Shield and for Unix it is a matter of removing
appropriate files.
You can maintain Geomatica V8.X and Geomatica V9.1 on the same machine so you may wish
to ensure a successful installation of Geomatica 9.1 before removing older versions of the
software.
Before you start:
Before uninstalling on Windows be sure to stop and remove the PCI floating license service using
the PCI license manager, if a floating license is active.
Stopping and removing the PCI floating license service.
1. In the Geomatica Toolbar V9.1 select click on the License Manager Option.
2. In the License Manager panel click on the Customize button.
3. With the customize panel open click on the Floating License Server.
Installation/Operations button.
4. In the License Server panel click on Stop (running) License Server.
5. Next click on Remove (installed) License Server.
6. Close the License Server, Customize and License Manager panels.
You can now proceed to remove Geomatica V91.

Geomatica Maintenance for Windows

To access the Geomatica Setup Maintenance program, either accesses it via the Start menu:
Start|Programs|PCI GeomaticsV9.1|Uninstall|PCI Geomatics Software V9.1
or by placing the Geomatica CD in the CDROM drive. This will automatically start the program
and will allow access to the setup Maintenance program.
In the setup panel you will have one of three selections

Modify - to uninstall selected packages. In the proceeding panels, the packages

selected will be installed. If a package is not selected and has been installed through
a previous installation, it will be removed.
Repair - repairing or applying fixes to the software. This will install a maintenance
patch or version of the software. This will not work if you are trying to repair an
installation with the same distribution CD. For instance, you will only be able to
Repair Geomatica V9.1 with Geomatica V9.1.1 or greater (when it becomes
available).
Remove This routine will completely remove the present installation of Geomatica.
Each release of Geomatica has a unique identifier; therefore, you will not be able to
uninstall any other version of Geomatica other than what you have selected.

26

Uninstalling for Windows

Note: If you are uninstalling and plan to reinstall the same version back up you license.dat file
found in Geomatica_v91/etc.
There are three options to uninstall or remove your PCI Geomatica software:

Using Geomatica Uninstall via the Start menu (recommended)

Add/Remove options through the system control panel.
Manual removal and registry editing (not recommended).

Using Geomatica Uninstall

From the Start Menu select Start|Programs|PCI GeomaticsV9.1|Uninstall|PCI Geomatics
Software V9.1.
This is the best and most common way to remove your PCI Geomatica software. In the setup
panel, simply select remove. Install shield will guide you through the process and indicate when
the uninstall has been completed.
When you uninstall the software you may be asked if you wish to delete several items that may
still be in use including various programs within PCI share common.
If the file being removed is in use or is shared, a message will indicate such and may require user
interaction to solve the problem.
Note: When you choose to remove all the software, as a safety precaution, it asks you if these
items are safe to remove. You may select Yes to all and delete them.

Uninstall Using the Control Panel

You are also able to remove the software via the system control panel.
1. At the bottom of the windows panel select Start > Settings and Control panel.
2. In the Control Panel, click on the Add/Remove Software option.
3. Locate PCI Geomatica and click on the Change/Remove option.
This will launch the install shield. Follow the instructions to uninstall the software.

Uninstall Manually
On some occasion, errors may occur during either the installation or removal of the Geomatica
software. For instance, if the system is not rebooted when requested and a second installation is
performed. This corrupts the uninstall links within the registry and the system assumes that each
time the setup program runs, it uninstalls the software. Also if you have tried to remove the
software manually InstallShield may only be giving you the Modify, Repair, or Remove options
when trying to install new.
To completely remove PCI Geomatica software manually, the following must be removed from
the system.

PCI Geomatica software

Interlock drivers and services (where applicable)

Registry entries

Uninstall entry in the registry.

27

Removing PCI Geomatica Software

To remove the PCI Geomatica software, simply delete the directory from your hard drive (i.e.
using explorer).

Interlock Drivers and Services

During the installation of your software, you were prompted as to which security device you have
installed. The different security options include the sentinel driver, superpro service and the USB
driver. To remove these services and devices, go to the Control Panel | Administrative tools |
Computer management and remove the sentinel driver, located in the device manager. Note:
you may have to select View|Show hidden devices to expose this device. Right click and select
uninstall.
If you have selected the superpro dongle during the installation, you can remove the service by
starting a command prompt and going to either
/winnt/system32/pci
or
/windows/system32/pci
Here is a list of commands that will control the superpro service. To control the service, type the
following:
superpro -install
to install the service.
superpro -remove
to remove the service. Stops service if running.
superpro -start
to start the service. Service must be installed.
superpro -stop
to stop the service. Service must be installed.
superpro -query
to test if service is running.
superpro -running
to test if service is running. Service must be installed.
If you have installed a SuperPro USB dongle, and want to remove all drivers and services, you
will have to remove the superpro service and the USB driver. The removal of the Superpro
service is described above.
To remove the USB driver, use the Windows control panel, Add/Remove Hardware routine.
Follow the instructions on screen, and at the Installed Devices on your computer procedure of the
Add/Remove Hardware Wizard panel, select the Rainbow USB SuperPro Device. Follow the
remainder of the instructions on screen to remove the device from your system.

Editing the Windows Registry

The PCIHOME_V91 environment variable is located in the Windows registry.
Warning: Any changes made to the registry take effect immediately and are irreversible.
Go to the START menu and select RUN.
Type in: regedit (the registry editor).
Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
+SOFTWARE
+PCIGroup
+PCIV91
and hit the Delete Key.
Close the Registry Editor.
The changes are now complete and all your other PCI software should function normally. If you
have no other PCI software, you can also delete the PCIGroup folder.

28

Removing Uninstall Entry in the Registry

In some instances, Geomatica software may not uninstall properly. This is a problem if
successive installs are applied without a reboot. Information is held in the system registry flagging
an installed version of the software. Simply follow the following link and remove the folder
corresponding to the installation that you are removing.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
+SOFTWARE
+Microsoft
+Windows
+CurrentVersion
+Uninstall
Select the alphanumeric folder, which has the environment variable Display Name pointing to
the version of Geomatica that you have installed, and delete it.

Geomatica Maintenance for UNIX

Simply delete the directory where your PCI Geomatica software has been install. Remove entries
either in the .cshrc file or other batch file that is launched when a command or xterm window is
started.
Note: it is recommended to backup or move any data that might be affect with the deletion of the
PCI Geomatica directory.
