About UQMSA
The UQ Malaysian Students Association (UQMSA) is an official and non-profitable
student body primarily for Malaysian students, based in the UQ St Lucia campus.
Individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds including students from other
universities, working adults and non-Malaysians are warmly welcomed to be part of our
big family throughout the year.
UQMSA is proud to host the largest collection of Malaysians in Queensland as well as a
number of non-Malaysians from various countries, with its membership base growing
across the years.
Through the promotion of Malaysian culture via fun-filled social and educational
activities, UQMSA has been striving to offer members a vibrant campus-culture and
community experience, encapsulating UQMSAs motto of being a home-away-fromhome. Annual or bi-annual social events like Welcoming BBQ, Mamak Night and
Outdoor Excursion act as a plat-form to unite our fellow Malaysians together, alongside
offering our members opportunities to fix their cravings for Malaysian delicacies. We
also have intellectual programs which pro-vide our members with information on career,
internship and volunteering opportunities.
All in all, we aim to offer a myriad of experiences to our members throughout their stay
in Brisbane, and to bring a sense of homeliness to our members.

Hey guys , I am the marketing convenor of UQMSA. I am currently on my second year
in my degree, bachelor biomedical science. So if you wanna discuss about anything

me. Other than science, I like to cycle and wouldnt mind to have a ride around
Brisbane on a free weekend. UQMSA have been a great group of people for support
and to socialise while having fun in between academic weeks.
I would say that UQMSA would be focusing more on academic and social aspects. We
are planning to hold a cultural exchange which involves another international club
from UQ to have a tour into their country.

Welcoming BBQ & Relay Race (08.08.2015)

This semester our Welcoming BBQ and Relay Race were held near UQ
Lakes for new members to mingle with old members and get a taste of
an Australian Barbie (BBQ). Selected members participated in fun-filled
activities as part of the relay race.

Picnic with Volunteers (22.08.2015)

To appreciate the hard work from our active
volunteers, we had a simple potluck picnic
for our volunteers to relax and enjoy some
food for a change! Committees got a chance
to bond with our volunteers on a more
casual level.

Malaysian Appreciation Night (M.A.N.)

M.A.N is an event dedicated to appreciate Malaysia and acknowledge Malaysias
58th National Merdeka (Independence) Day. We celebrated with food,
activities and a fun-filled quiz!

Makan Night (02.09.2015)

Makan night is an event held
once throughout the semester.
During this day, Malaysian food
is sold to curb everyones
cravings.

Funlympics (19.09.2015)
Funlympics was our first ever casual sporting
competition. Our members played Dodgeball and
Frisbee and everyone got a chance to bond with each
other. Our winners received prizes for their sporting
skills and great team work.

Think Tank (21.09.2015 to 17.10.2015)

In collaboration with SHELL Malaysia and
the Australia Malaysia Business Council of
Queensland (AMBCQ), Think Tank was our
first ever case study competition where
participants developed technical writing
skills as well as presentation skills.

Mid-Autumn Festival (24.09.2015)

A night dedicated to the MidAutumn Festival where our
members chilled (literally!) and
enjoyed a night of mooncakes,
kuihs, games and lanterns!

Outdoor Excursion@ Sunshine Coast

This semester we brought our members to pick
delicious strawberries and enjoy Stand-Up
Paddling and Kayaking!

Annual General Meeting (07.10.2015)

That time of the year when new leaders are elected. Thank you so much for your
hard work UQMSA 2015 and all the best to the new UQMSA committee of 2016!

UQU Diwali (20.10.2015)

In collaboration with UQ Union, we celebrated the festival of lights, Diwali.

Through food, performances and activities, various clubs and stores
celebrated this global Hindu festival with the general public of UQ.

Mamak Night (21.10.2015)

Marking the end of the semester, Mamak Night

brought a taste of Malaysia to our members. We
had Nasi Kerabu, Maggie Goreng, Satay, Roti
Canai, Apam balik and Sago! A massive thank you
to our caterers and sponsors who provided the
delicious food.

What does UQMSA mean to you?

UQMSA is "infamous" for being one of the busiest societies around,
but at the same time UQMSA has a great reputation and can really
spice up your life if you really put your commitment into it. Well I said
it all, UQMSA means a lot to me. Not really answering the question
eh? Cause it is not easy to put it in words heh, but I will try my best.
UQMSA strives its best to uphold its core: "Bringing a Piece of Home
to You", be it Malaysian food (typical us), culture or language,
UQMSA always has its unique way to remind you of home. Yes, I
know that people always say that we should interact more with the
locals especially when studying overseas, but that does not mean you
have to give up on your roots. Trust me, that strong sense of
belonging cannot be felt elsewhere here. Surrounded with the people
that speak with the same accent and enjoy the same food, you might
even be more homesick (opps), but that is OK since UQMSA is
always there for you! One of UQMSA biggest charms (not I say one
ah, even foreigners mentioned many many times) it its tight bond
between its members. Regardless if you are a newcomer or an ol'
sport (or even a non-Malaysian), you will find a way to fit in because
everyone will welcome you gladly. Why? Cause it's a UQMSA thing. ;)
So again, what is UQMSA to me? One word: Family :)

What has UQMSA offered you?

To summarise, an experience of a lifetime. :) Joining UQMSA was never about the fame and glory (more
like pain and gory), but to uphold the spirit of service above self. Undeniably, being part of UQMSA was
not easy at all. I can still recall those sleepless nights, skipped classes (oops), arguments and
frustrations. However, it was all worth it in the end. You get to build countless connections, earn priceless
experiences and forge strong friendships. The satisfaction cannot be described but easily experienced.
UQMSA has a another strange charm, everyone involved in UQMSA will "magically" give their best. The
work culture in UQMSA is very encouraging and I find myself stepping out of my comfort zone every now
and then. The bond within UQMSA is very strong, the sense of belonging brings everyone together and I
sincerely appreciate this big family. Looking back at Malaysia while being in UQMSA, I realise that the
ideal kind of Malaysian spirit, Malaysian Dream, Malaysian-ness or...you know what I mean ;), is being
lived here. I would really like to bring back what I experienced in UQMSA back to Malaysia, the muhhibah
you experience here is priceless. Enough of being cheesy, just join UQMSA to find out yourself! :D
