Assignment title Why Multimedia?

Scenario:
You are working as a junior designer with the IT department at Cheam
High School. The department are continuing to develop different ways that
multimedia could help to advertise and inform new listeners about the
student radio station, Phoenix FM. You need to explain to the leadership
team the different ways multimedia can be used and give examples of
where it has been used successfully in other companies, to prove to them
that they should also be using multimedia to enhance their current
promotion of Phoenix FM.
1. (P1) Explain how multimedia is used to meet business
objectives
Produce a written account which explains to the leadership team how
multimedia can be used to help Phoenix FM meet its business
objectives.

You should cover the following uses of multimedia:


o Promotion and advertising e.g. Web pages, Digital posters,
Virtual tours
o Educating and training e.g. simulations, e-learning
packages
o Entertainment and leisure e.g. computer games, virtual
reality.
Give an example of each of the above and discuss in detail their
business requirements. This should include their business
objectives (e.g. promotion, advertising, education, entertainment
and leisure etc) and details of the target audience for example:
age, gender, culture, race, business, interests, IT literacy.
For each, discuss how the multimedia platform best meets their
needs
Explain with examples how the various multimedia components
such as sound, animation, still and moving images, video and any
other multimedia component it used to help meet the business
objectives.

Scenario:
You have been commissioned by the Cheam High School radio station
Phoenix FM to create an interactive product designed to advertise their
new radio show. The product will need to feature a range of different
multimedia in order to appeal to the target audience of the station. If this
is successful, it will feature as part of their website for the wider school
community to use. The manager of Phoenix FM has asked for the work to
be innovative and show imagination so that they can gather as many new
listeners as possible.
2. (P2) Design a multimedia product for a specified business
need
Produce design documentation for your interactive product for Phoenix
FM. Your design documentation should include:
An introduction outlining the original business requirements.
o Write a detailed paragraph about the purpose and audience of
your product
o Discuss in detail, what kind of product you are going to create
eg. Prezi, Interactive Presentation, website
o Decide what software you will use and justify why you are
choosing it to create your product
Design a main interface for your product
o Create a hierarchy plan you show how all the pages/slides link
o Create a storyboard for each slide/page, which includes details
of all the main features including what multimedia
components will be included and where
o Explain how the navigation will work - what method/s will you
use?
o Write about what multimedia components you will include eg:
video, sounds including; speech, music, sound effects,
animations, game
o Discuss the input methods - how will you use input devices:
video camera, still camera, keyboard, microphone, etc
o Create timeline based storyboards for each timeline based
component - sound, video, animation, game, transitions

3. (M1) Demonstrate initiative and imagination in meeting


user requirements
Now that you have started the planning process, you need to
demonstrate that you have been reflective about the design process to
create imaginative plans to meet the user requirements. Plans should
be reflected upon and updated as required. Multiple designs should be
created in order to decide upon the most appropriate (e.g. when
deciding the navigation layout). Justification of design decisions should
also be used to explain how each element of the final product will meet
the user requirements.

4. (P3) Identify how the elements of the content will be sourced
Produce a document to explain how each of the elements for your
product will be sourced. This should include images, sounds, videos etc.
You should identify how you will avoid plagiarism and also an
explanation of why you need to be aware of copyright law.
You should then collect together the required assets and complete a
sources table. In the table you should identify the following:

Scenario:
The designs that you have created have been approved by the Phoenix FM
producers and by Ms. Allott. You are now required to create the product
and ensure that it is suitable for the end users by ensuring it will be
displayed correctly.

5. (P4) Develop a functional multimedia product for a specified


business need
You are now required to use your designs to create and develop a
working interactive product and the multimedia components within it.
You should ensure that it meets the needs of the client and the target
audience. The product should also be easy to use. When creating your
product, you should ensure that a wide range of tools and techniques
are used. All assets collected and created must be recorded into a
sources table.

6. (M2) Demonstrate advanced skills in producing a complex


product
When creating your product you must use a range of advanced skills
such as those listed in the statement of requirement (included in this
assignment) as desirable. All tools and techniques must be used in a

7. (D1) Produce a complex, high quality, fit for purpose


multimedia product
In creating your final product, your work must be of near professional
quality, demonstrating flair and fitness for purpose. The work will not
just contain conventional ways of displaying information but will
demonstrate imagination, such as those items listed in the statement
of requirement as optional. You must also show that any assets that
you have collected are from a variety of sources. All assets collected
and created must be recorded into a sources table.

8. (P5) Set up software and display services appropriately to
display multimedia outcomes
Once the multimedia product is complete and improved, you will need
to export different versions of the product so that Phoenix FM can use it
in different ways. You should export your product:
As a web page so that it can be used as part of the Phoenix FM
web site
As a SWF file so that it can be used on the school network
Executable used as a standalone product to be added to the VLE
as a downloadable file.
For each format, you must explain each of the stages you follow, with
print screens to back up your comments.
You should also include details of any settings that you change e.g.
Full screen, quarter screen, thumbnail
Screen resolution
Quality vs speed of delivery
End user hardware and software configuration

Statement of Requirement
The product you have been asked to create must be suitable for advertising
Phoenix FM. It must provide information about different DJs and their shows. It
should include a range of interactive elements to entice and entertain the users.
The target audience of this product are students aged 11-19. The product must
be suitable to embed within the existing Phoenix FM website.

Scenario:
Before the multimedia product can be submitted to Phoenix FM, you must
ensure that it meets all of the objectives of the initial brief. You must make
sure that it functions as you designed it to. You must also check with a
sample of the target audience that it also meets their user needs.
9. (P6) Review a multimedia product using user feedback
Now that your product is complete, we need to ensure that it functions
as expected and that it meets the needs of the users. To do this, you
need to gather feedback in the form of a questionnaire. Design a
questionnaire that gives participants the opportunity to record

There should be clear sections for the users to comment on each of the
sections of your product.
The questionnaire should be completed by 5 people that would be part
of Phoenix FMs target audience.
Once the feedback has been gathered, produce a document that

10.

(M3) Adapt a product in line with user feedback

Using the feedback gathered in P6, you should make improvements to


your product. Any changes should be explained and have
accompanying screen shots.
You should then gather feedback on the improved product, to see if the
feedback has also improved.

(D2) Reflect on feedback, suggesting future developments

Produce a document to reflect upon the feedback you were given, and
the changes that you made as a result. You should also suggest further
developments for the product, if time or money were not an issue, what
else would you like to do to the product to further improve it?
At this stage, there should be no unidentified errors in the product. All
issues, should be either corrected, or identified as an area of future
development.
