(one original and two good quality photocopies) at the meeting, protected by heavy board.
To ensure that all papers are in a form which is
acceptable for publication the manuscripts submitted by the authors in a camera ready form should adhere to some rules. It is not intended to stifle originality but rather to ensure that the final paper, which has cost the author many hours of research, investigation and preparation, will be appreciated by, and be of benefit to, all who read the Proceedings.
Authors, if they produce their manuscript on a
word-processor, are requested to send their contribution also on disk: one file containing the manuscript as an ASCII file, and one in their word processor format (please state the format precisely).
In order to ensure that proper recognition be
given to the author's work, it is important that some basic rules are adhered to and some guidelines are accepted. The Organising Committee reserves the right to refuse your manuscript in case of non compliance with these instructions. Papers which exceed the stated maximum length or stray significantly from the recommended layout will not be included in the Proceedings. 1.1 Type and length of papers The total length of your manuscript, including all figures and tables, is limited to the length as stated in the letter of acceptance. Please adhere strictly to this limitation, it will not be possible to print longer manuscripts. Approximately 600 words in the format recommended will fit on one page.
1.2 Photo-offset printing
Reproduction of papers will be made directly from the material supplied by the authors. You are asked therefore to:
adhere strictly to layout instructions detailed in
section 2, read and correct your text carefully, as no proof reading will be possible.
2. LAYOUT INSTRUCTIONS FOR
MANUSCRIPTS 2.1 Language of the manuscript Only English language manuscripts are accepted for this Proceedings. 2.2 Title The title of your paper should indicate the subject as clearly and briefly as possible.
NOTE: The papers will be printed directly from
your original which should be sent on A4 paper (21 x 29,4 cm). American 8 1/2" x 11" paper is acceptable provided that the text is contained within the column space shown: Double column print, total print area: 15,2 x 23,3 cm.
2.1.1 The upper limit for the beginning of the text
on the first page is lower than on following pages. This is clearly indicated by the CIE LOGO marking on this sample paper. This space, across the full width of the page, is reserved for typesetting your title and name at the printers.
Authors with access to word-processors and
laser printers may choose to produce their manuscript directly on A4 paper. In this case the text should be set in 9 point Helvetica or 10 point Times Roman.
For this reason you are asked to type the title
and author name(s) at the very top of the sheet well outside the format area.
Authors using typewriters or letter-quality
printers should produce their manuscripts on A3 paper (11"x18" - USA) having Elite type (character width 2,1 mm or 12 characters to the inch). The manuscript should then be reduced to A4 size (i.e. a linear reduction to 70 % in case of A3 paper) on a good quality photocopier.
The page numbering will also be done by the
printer and therefore the numbering of your manuscript pages should also be typed well outside the format area. 2.3 Abstract Your paper should begin with a synopsis of the paper, giving a clear outline of its contents and stating principal results and conclusions. 2.3.1 Start your manuscript on the lefthand side of the page, typing the word "ABSTRACT" (in
Preparation of manuscript for a CIE meeting Proceedings
CAPITALS). Position this below the title space starting at the lefthand vertical format line. Leave a 1,5 space after this heading, then write the abstract of your paper (using single line spacing). Leave a 1,5 space between paragraphs within the abstract. The finished length of each line of type should be approximately 73 mm. Never type outside the format areas. 2.4 Introduction Leave a two line space, then type at the left vertical line "1. INTRODUCTION", leave a 1,5 space and then start the text again at the left vertical line, using single space typing, with 1,5 space between paragraphs, headings and subheadings. 2.5 Body of the paper Leave a two line space, then type at the left vertical line "2." and the heading of Sec. 2 of your manuscript. Use decimal numbering for all major headings and sub headings e.g.: 1., 1.1, 1.2, 2., 2.1, etc. All headings should be typed in CAPITALS and subheadings in lower case. Do not underline headings and sub-headings. See 2.5.1 for typing second column or moving to continuation pages. For further information on the use of figures and tables see paragraph 2.6 and for symbols, units and equations see paragraph 2.8. 2.5.1 When it becomes necessary to continue on the right hand side of the page forming a second column, type on the first page to the bottom of the second format area. Do not type below that area. From the second page on, use the full format areas. You may increase the space before headings or subheadings to get full page length columns. 2.6 Figures and tables These should be inserted into the manuscript near to where first mention is made. The size of diagrams, the lettering used on figures and the thickness of lines used should take account of the reduction if your original is typed on A3 or 11"x18" (USA) paper. Figures and tables can spread across both columns, if necessary. For graphs, show only the coordinate axes, or at most the major grid lines. Figures should be drawn in black Indian ink if they are not printed by computer graphics. Half tone pictures do not reproduce well and should, if possible, be avoided.
Figures and tables should each be numbered
consecutively. These numbers should appear both in the text and with captions. The captions should be positioned above tables and below figures. 2.7 References, details of author(s) & acknowledgements References cited in the body of the paper should be consecutively numbered, placing the number in square brackets: [ ]. List all references at the end of your paper under a heading: REFERENCES, giving the information in the following way. SURNAME of the author (in CAPITALS) initials: full title of paper, official abbreviation of journal in italics, volume (in bold), pp. first - last page of contribution, year of publication (e.g.: JEROME CW: Absolute colour rendering, J. Illum. Eng. Soc. 4, 25-28, 1974). For books or monographs, write after the name(s) of author(s) and the title of the book (monograph) the name of the editor (if appropriate), the publisher, place and year of publication (e.g.: BUDDE W: Physical Detectors of Optical Radiation, ed.: GRUM F & BARTLESON J, Academic Press, New York, 1983). When the work referred to is an official publication of an organisation and where no author's name is given the organisation responsible for the publication should be quoted at the beginning of the reference (e.g.: Commission Internationale de l'clairage: Colorimetry, CIE 15.2-1986). At the end of your paper, list the name(s) and exact postal address(es) of (all) the author(s) (include e-mail or fax number as well). Finally, if necessary, acknowledgement of support and assistance should be given. 2.8 Symbols, units and equations As far as possible, type symbols and equations. If symbols are not available on your typewriter or wordprocessor use black Indian ink to write them in very clearly. Where symbols with subscripts or superscripts are used, increase the line spacing above or below the line in which they appear, so that the symbols and indices are clearly legible. Equations should be numbered consecutively at the righthand side of the column in brackets ( ). Use only SI-units, and consult the CIE VOCABULARY (CIE 17.4-1987) for the standard terms and symbols. If you use acronyms they must be defined the first time they appear.
All correspondence on manuscripts, prior to the meeting, should be sent to:
