Uptown Funk Music Review

by Cade Mountain
I'm back with a music review of " Uptown Funk," by Mark Ronson, featuring
Bruno Mars. If you listen closely you can
hear that the brass in the background
are performing 70's funk riffs. The bass
also plays a line you would expect to
hear in 70's funk music. This is what
gives this song it's uniqueness. It's voted
as number 1 on the Top 100 Billboard
chart. It was also ranked number 1 in
the countries: Australia, Canada,
France, Ireland and New Zealand. I
hope you can try it out for yourself sometime.

No More TCAP?

The Future of Coker Creek

by Jason Ashburn

by Aubrey Gilland

In November 2014, Tennessee announced it

would replace the state assessment in language arts and math. Language arts and
math testing will now be called TN Ready.
K-12 experts assembled an assessment that
will aligned with Tennessee standards, and
can also be updated as needed. The TN Department of Education will make all decisions like time length, item selecting, comprehension, and scoring. In TN Ready there
are writing questions, and students will do
math without a calculator. TCAP seems to
have at least one advantage for students:
they can use a calculator! TN Ready will be
given on a computer. TN Ready can be
changed as the standards change, but this
is not true for TCAP. The differences can go on and on, but I hope
you like it, because TN Ready
starts next year!

Will budget cuts cause this school to close

down? The community and the staff of
Coker Creek Elementary School are worried
about the budget of their beloved school. The
board held a meeting earlier this year to discuss budget cuts, and many of their proposals were aimed directly at Coker Creek Elementary. Their ideas include making the
principal teach classes, ending the art program, and taking away their permanent librarian." With the closing of Coker Creek we
would save around a million dollars a year.
Even with this dramatic change in savings
the community has started a petition to
keep the school alive. Even saving this
much money many residents of the community believe we should keep the school, but
even if they don't close it completely, many
people are afraid that these cuts would drag
them under very soon. And out of the 120
students K-8th grade elementary, some children will have to ride the bus close to two
hours just to get to the next school. Will this
school get closed down completely or will
these cuts be the end of Coker Creek Elementary? What is the future of this school?

Could the Bible become the

Official Book of Tennessee?
by Aubrey Gilland
The state of Tennessee has 20 categories of
state symbols, but could a book start a new
category? Two Tennessee lawmakers, Representative Jerry Sexton, and Senator Steve
Southerland, introduced House Bill 0615 and
Senate Bill 1108, that "designates the Holy
Bible as the official state book." Although this
may seem as a great thing for most people,
there are issues about this. Many people say
that this violates Article I, Sections 3 and 4 of
the Tennessee Constitution and the First
Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. In contrast, Sexton disagrees, he believes that if the
Holy Bible was the official book of Tennessee,
then it would acknowledge the role of the Bible
in Tennessee's past and in the present. David
Plazas, strongly opposed to this bill, wrote
that, "Both Tennessee and United States constitutions expressly respect the rights of individuals to worship freely, but also prohibit the
state from favoring one religion over another."
He also quotes Article 1, section 3 and 4 of the
Tennessee Constitution. Section 3 states:
"That all men have a natural and indefeasible
right to worship Almighty God according to the
dictates of their own conscience; that no man
can of right be compelled to attend, erect, or
support any place of worship, or to maintain
any minister against his consent; that no human authority can, in any case whatever, control or interfere with the rights of conscience;
and that no preference shall ever be given, by
law, to any religious establishment or mode of
worship." Section 4 states, "That no political or
religious test, other than an oath to support
the Constitution of the United States and of
this state, shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under this
state."
The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution
states, "Congress shall make no law respecting
an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the
free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom
of speech, or of the press; or the right of the
people peaceably to assemble, and to petition
the government for a redress of grievances."
They should have made a decision by the end
of April. So what do you think, will the Holy
Bible become the official book of Tennessee, or
not?

Update: On April 16, the State Senate voted to
move the bill to committee, effectively killing
it by voting for non-action.

Not Facebook Fans

by Zeke Davis and Devine Thomas
At least 250 million people use their electronic
devices to check email, internet, but most importantly FACEBOOK! Facebook, Instagram,
Twitter, and Pinterest are used by many people on a daily basis. Some people are constantly checking it 24/7. What about the people
who can't use it or have no internet at all? It is
just not fair to us! An anonymous source
claims, " I don't use it because my info will be
out there and I won't have it."
Let us stand and fight for people who can't use
it! We could start a tiny rebellion, but nobody
seems to care about us. Why don't we raise
awareness for the people out there who can't
use it? Please help us! People who use Facebook are starting to become "urban hermits."
This is cause for concern because it causes selfwithdrawal, may cause depression, and low
self-esteem. If you stop using, it will provoke
more interaction with others. Now for the people who can't use Facebook, they are less depressed and feel good about themselves. So lets
stop using Facebook and look at the big picture: theres a whole big world out there, so go
be a part of it!

Well, we sort of were. To promote "visual

thinking strategies" and interest in world
events, the New York Times learning blog
posts a photo each Monday and encourages
students to speculate on what the photo is
about. After the details of the photos were released, our newspaper staff discussed it and
posted a response. Each response is moderated, which means it is previewed before posting is allowed. Our post was accepted! While
writing this, we also had an interesting debate,
concerning the use of indefinite articles before
words beginning with the letter "h." It turns
out, our editor Ms. Mondone, was completely
wrong and the students were correct! Talk
about collaborative learning at its best!

April Fools Anyone? By Kayleigh Smith

Everyone loves playing practical jokes on people, especially companies such as, Google,
Samsung, and Microsoft. Google staged a couple pranks. For example, Google fooled the
world by setting up Google Maps as a PacMan game. You first would type in a location,
then you would find the Pac-Man button at
the bottom, right hand corner of the screen.
When the button is clicked, the screen would
turn into PAC-MAN! Next, Google set up
their page backwards! To get there, you
would simply type in www.com.google into
the search bar at the top of the screen.
Google isn't the only organization that can
pull a prank. Microsoft designed a way for
cats to use apps such as, PowerPoint and Microsoft Word. It's called Office 2016 for cats!
Cats have the option to use apps such as,
PowerPounce, OneNap, and Meow!
Finally, Samsung invented a new product
called the Galaxy BLADE Edge! If you ever
need information while you're cooking, then
grab the BLADE Edge! The BLADE Edge is a
knife, but with the characteristics of a smartphone. Source: CNN.com, Living, April 1

Bag of Money
by Tyler Martin
The Roar put out a box in front of the
office for students to vote. The question was, 'What
would you do if you found a large bag of money?'
You had the choice to either return it or keep it.
Although the raw voting scores tabulated are impossible with us only having about 300 students,
the scores below were converted into a percentage
of the total votes received. The issue with voting
was that some students felt the urge to knock off
all the papers into the box. So we counted up all
the votes and it seems that most of you are honest
people who would find the owner and return it.
Although for some, you would want to keep it.
thank you for voting it is highly appreciated.

Return It 52%

Bloodborne by Leah Duckett

A new video game called Bloodborne
was released on March 24th, 2015 specifically for PlayStation 4. It was directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, the president of From Software. You might be
familiar with Dark Souls or Dark Souls
II, two other games Miyazaki has directed. Published by Sony Computer Entertainment, this newer action game has
been nominated for Most Anticipated
Game. GameStop rated Bloodborne 1/10,
so it's definitely a must-have for all of
the GameStop fans. Happy gaming!

The Apple Watch is unlike

any other Apple device. It brings the power
of an Apple phone right to your wrist. There
are many things different in this watch compared to a normal Apple device. They have
added different ways to select, navigate, and
input. For starters, they added a unique input device. In the Apple Watch, it's the digital crown. On normal watches it is used to
set date and time, but on the Apple Watch
it's used to navigate nimbly and more easily
than using your finger. Apple also added incredibly high pixel density which makes
texts and words easier to read. In addition to
recognized touch, Apple Watch senses force.
With Force Touch, it brings up additional
controls in apps. Apple even added more battery time. So here are some useful battery
metrics: up to 48hr timepiece, up to 6.5hr
audio playback, up to 3hr talk time, up to
6.5hr workout, and up to 72hr power preserve. Apple Watch is a must have for anyone who likes the Apple products.

No Books In School?
by Jason Ashburn
Statistics show that a typical elementary
textbook costs more than $100. Some developers have created the E-book. The E-book is
a modern, light-weight, and portable version
of those heavy textbooks. The bad thing
about textbooks is that they're made of paper, so they can get damaged pretty easily,
and in a few years the information in the
textbooks will be outdated. The good thing
about E-books is that they are modern, portable, small, strong, and light-weight.
The bad thing about E-books is that the battery in them has to be charged. Another
good thing is that E-books cost less than
textbooks. However, the average public
school's budget is not able to buy enough Ebooks for every student. Even in private
schools, they have to buy their own E-books.
A good thing about E-books is that the information can stay up to date. Most people say
that the schools could adopt E-books in a
more gradual way. I hope all of you are
ready for E-books, one day.

Viruses On Our Side
by Jason Ashburn
The notion of viruses fighting cancer was
always an idea but with new technology we
might actually may be able to do that. A cancer patient with blood-borne cancer got injected with a modified measles virus. The
patient went through complete remission. A
second patient was injected by a similar
modified measles virus, but the patient did
not go through as big as a recovery, but it
was proven that it did shrink the tumor. A
herpes virus is modified to attack brain tumors. How these viruses work is that the
measles virus goes for the immune system,
which is how it attacks the blood cancer. The
herpes virus settles down in the nervous system,

which is how it attacks brain tumors. One

day we might actually use viruses to fight
cancer.

The Fashion
by Leah Duckett
Tellico Plains High School held a fashion
show on Tuesday, April 7th, including
dresses and outfits made by students at the
school. The bizarre yet marvelous performance was owned not only by the dresses and
models that sported them, but also by the
music. Although the dresses looked expensive, they were all made from recycled items
and simple fabrics. The finale was phenomenal, with Morgan Payne dancing around in
her dainty, fairy-like dress and being followed by Skylar Shell in her daunting dress
and intimidating wings. With an enchanted
forest theme, "The Fashion 2015" made a
magnificent impact on students, parents,
friends, and many important people that
attended.

1. Show up on time
2. Stay focused and relaxed
3. Sit comfortably
4. Expect and accept a bit of stress
5. Read the directions
6. Pace yourself
7. Dont rush
8. Dont get distracted
9. Focus on the stuff you know
10. Use all your time
And finally, one more important thing: Once the

test is over, try not to think about it for a

while. Instead of worrying and fretting about
what grade you might get, reward yourself for
making it through the test.

How would you like to be in this classroom? On
April 1, 2015, Professor Mathew Weathers decided to pull a prank on his students. They
watched a video of himself explaining a trigonometry problem. They were in shock when
there teacher started interacting with the

Eventually, the video version of Professor

"enters" the computer screen, has an argument

be,"April fools!" Source: Yahoo News

The Average You Want

Duke, Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Kentucky battled it out in a great Final Four
tournament this year. There's no perfect season for Kentucky this year! With a great
game between Wisconsin and Kentucky,
Kentucky was sent home with a bad attitude
after getting beat by Wisconsin. Kentucky's
star player, Andrew Harrison, was locked
down by Frank Kaminsky, who played out of
position to guard Harrison. To start off, the
momentum was definitely on Wisconsin's
side. Kaminsky came out of the gate running
with 3 three pointers in a row to start off the
game. Now I'm going to let Logan give his
opinion on this game's highlight player,
since Kaminsky is his favorite player.
" I lost a lot of respect for Andrew Harrison after the game. He made vulgar responses to questions about Frank Kaminsky.

He was just mad because he's not on Kaminsky's level and frustrated after the perfect
season came to an end. Now let's get to the
daddy-o, Kaminsky. He's as tall as Durant,
can shoot like Curry, drives like Harden,
finishes like Westbrook, scores like Kobe,
and plays defense like Duncan."
Now for the other game, Duke vs Michigan
State. Duke skunked Michigan State 81-61.
Justin Winslow finished with Duke's team
high 19 points. The Spartans started out the
game winning within the first four minutes.
Duke was led by two star freshmen, a solid
senior, and trademark defense.
Now to what this was all about, the National
Championship, Duke vs Wisconsin. Duke
won by five 68-63. Though Kaminsky finished with 21 points, at the end Wisconsin
wasn't giving him the ball. I mean, if you
have a player of that caliber he needs the
ball. Duke's highest scorer, Jhalil Okafor
only had eleven points, but Duke didn't need
a high scorer because they had a lot of contributors. In the end, one player can't do it
all and that was proven in this year's National Championship.
