Appliedmechanicsisabranchofthephysicalsciencesandthepracticalapplicationofmechanics.
Appliedmechanicsdescribestheresponseofbodies(solidsandfluids)orsystemsofbodiestoexternal
forces.Someexamplesofmechanicalsystemsincludetheflowofaliquidunderpressure,thefractureof
asolidfromanappliedforce,orthevibrationofanearinresponsetosound.Apractitionerofthe
disciplineisknownasamechanician.
Engineeringmechanicsmaybedefinedasbranchofsciencethatdescribesthebehaviorofabody,in
eitherabeginningstateofrestorofmotion,subjectedtotheactionofforces.[1]
Appliedmechanics,asitsnamesuggests,bridgesthegapbetweenphysicaltheoryanditsapplicationto
technology.Assuch,appliedmechanicsisusedinmanyfieldsofengineering,especiallymechanical
engineering.Inthiscontext,itiscommonlyreferredtoasengineeringmechanics.Muchofmodern
engineeringmechanicsisbasedonIsaacNewton'slawsofmotionwhilethemodernpracticeoftheir
applicationcanbetracedbacktoStephenTimoshenko,whoissaidtobethefatherofmodern
engineeringmechanics.
Withinthetheoreticalsciences,appliedmechanicsisusefulinformulatingnewideasandtheories,
discoveringandinterpretingphenomena,anddevelopingexperimentalandcomputationaltools.Inthe
applicationofthenaturalsciences,mechanicswassaidtobecomplementedbythermodynamics,the
studyofheatandmoregenerallyenergy,andelectromechanics,thestudyofelectricityand
magnetism.[2]
