MTH507 MATHEMATICS FOR SOCIAL SCIENCES


FINAL EXAMINATION
TRIMESTER 2, 2015

Time allowed: 3 hours + 10 minutes reading time

Instructions:
1. There are two sections in the paper. Section A (40 marks is compulsory) and choose 3 out of the 4
questions in Section B (3 x 20 = 60 marks)
2. Start each Section on a new page.
3. Show all working as partly correct answers may be rewarded.
4. Programmable calculators are not allowed.
5. This exam is worth 50% of your overall mark.

QUESTION B1

1) The fourth term of an arithmetic sequence is 47 and the eight term is 35. Solve for the first term
and the common difference using Elimination method.

2) A company produces two types of Steel. Type 1 requires 2 hours of melting, 4 hours of cutting, and
10 hours of rolling per ton. Type 2 requires 5 hours of melting, 1 hour of cutting and 5 hours of
rolling per ton. Forty hours is available for melting, twenty hours for cutting, and sixty hours for
rolling. Each ton of Type 1 steel produces $240 profit, and each ton of Type 2 produces $80 profit.
Find the maximum profit and the production schedule that will produce this profit. Clearly state the
objective function and constraints. Use the graph paper provided for plotting and attach it to the
answer booklet.

QUESTION B2
1) Suppose that a store has three sizes of cans of nuts. The standard size conatins 2 pounds of peanuts
and 1 pound of cashews. The large size contains 1 pound of walnuts, 6 pounds of peanuts and 2
pounds of cashews. The giant size conatins 1 pound of walnuts, 4 pounds of peanuts, and 2 pounds
of cashews. Suppose that the store recieves an order for 5 pounds of walnuts, 26 pounds of peanuts
and 12 pounds of cashews. How will it fill this order with the given sizes of cans?
You may any method you wish to solve this system.

higway. If the farmer does not want to fence the side along the highway, what is the largest area
