these women. Statistics show that one of you will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Over 225,000
women will be diagnosed with some form of breast cancer this year and nearly 40,000 will die. If youre a
man, you too are at risk. In this year alone, 400 men will die from breast cancer.
Many people have heard of the breast cancer gene, also known as the BRCA gene. The presence of
the BRCA gene greatly increases your risk for getting the disease and knowing whether or not you have
the gene is incredibly important for making preventative choices. But remember, even if you dont have
the gene, youre still not immune: 90% - 95% of breast cancers are NOT hereditary
There really is no way to tell which women or men will hear those frightening words, You have
breast cancer.
The good news: Breast Cancer has a 95% cure rate when diagnosed early.
New technology has been approved by Food & Drug Administration to aid in earlier detection of breast
cancer in women with dense breast tissue. The Brem Foundation to Defeat Breast Cancer, led by Dr.
Rachel Brem, works with this and other new technologies as they conduct research. Through research,
outreach, education, and services to the people of the D.C. Metropolitan area and the Nation, the
Brem Foundation works to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease.
