THE CASE

The case for this clock is based on


making part of an octagonal
(eig!lt-sicled) Il-ame. It starts out
as one piece oi 44 stock ripped to
a width uf2VtaJld about 22" long,
see Fig, I. (This is loneer than
needed to provide a "handle" for
cutting the mite,." on th~ small
case pieces.)
The inside surface of the clock
case has two grooves lhal hold
lhe fronl and back panels. However, before these grooves can be
cut, Idid the preliminary work of
laminating the stock for tho panels so I could determine th~ final ------'
width needed for thc panel grooves.

the panel, is 10 use Yo hardwood plywood.
But I wanted to add a lillie color to the
clock. so I made the panels by laminating a
5 by 10' piece of ~'o.-micato a piece (If '"
~la.'Qnite using ""ntact cement.

When the panels fit the frame. I mad" the


clock face by drillinJ! holes for the movement and hour markers,

certain the face was centered even thou~h
the panel might be cocked in the case. So I
slid the face panel into the ease and tra ced
the inside of the case on the back ,ide of'the
panel, see Fi!l:. 18.
The cluck hands are attached to a
threaded stud that projects from the clock
movement through the face panel. I
marked the location for this stud 2\~" up
from the bottom and centered between th~
tmced lines, see Fig. 19.
After marking th. location for the stud,
the posiuons of the hour marker!' are 10-

cated b)' using a compass to draw H l!.-


radius around the center hole. Then use a
square to mark the location. of the hour
markers on Ihe circle.

To build the truck. I started by oultU)Kthe

Shop Note: Although these three dadoes
(and the groove lhal follows) can be cut

bottnm.
To cut the dadoes on the MITt'" workpiece needed for the chassis. first clamp an
auxiliary fence over the router table's

The challenge in building the cab is how to


make th~ windows. The solution turned
out to be kind of like the theory behind
carving - )'OU lout away everything that
doesn't look like a window.
The basic procedure is to CUt dadees in
two pieces (D) of 1'4 stock and laminate
these two pieces together, see fig. II.

Before mounting the fenders. ternporarily mount the wheels and then glue
and clump the fenders in place so they clear
the wheels. see }o~ig.29,
